  1. Remember the old Apple Ad "I'm a Switcher"? Well after 40 years with Apple I'm Switcher from Apple to PC. Apple is now a phone company. This is my second build after the switch. First was a dual Xeon build with (4) 1080Ti's. I'm a retired Aerospace Engineer and did a lot of CAD and Graphics work during my career. I enjoyed it so much it's now my hobby in retirement. (Never did like to Golf). I use a lot of different software but currently Solidworks for modeling, Cinema 4D for modeling and animations & Redshift for rendering. This is my first build ever with an AMD CPU. All my career in engineering I used Xeon UNIX workstations as that is what they use in Aerospace. Very expensive boxes in the 70's and 80's. Like $70k per box and the CAD software I used was like $50k per seat annually. This new build of mine is 100's of times faster than those vintage boxes I used. Anyway, the main goal for this build was to build the strongest workstation possible inside a standard PC case. This workstation sits on my desk very close to me. I didn't want a mining rig, rack mounts or anything external like MoRa3's etc. My office is fully air conditioned and luckily I'm half deaf so fan noise is never an issue with me. Led Zeppelin blew out my left ear drum at a concert in 1974, indoor venue. I've never been able to hear from my left ear since that day. I feel lucky I didn't lose both. I dual boot this new build with Win 10 for Workstations and Linux Ubuntu. I still keep a Mac attached via a KVM switch but find myself using it less and less. Temps: After 1 hour Hybrid Render, CPU 64 cores @ 100% utilization, GPUs @ 95-99% utilization. CPU: 66-68c GPUs: 50-55c Water: 42c I don't do any gaming but I certainly could with this rig. It's insane fast. This build is actually more suited to Creating games. I modeled my custom Radiator Assembly to scale in Solidworks to insure it would fit in the space I had planned for it.
  2. Budget (including currency): around 5000 Euro Country: Greece I'm building a new PC for a friend who is an orthodontist, and has decided to upgrade his main PC at work. The last time he did such an upgrade, he bought a desktop from the company (Sirano) that makes the software they use (inLab) for 3d modeling and 3d printing implants, bridges etc. This time he thought to give custom build a try because what they are offering is way overpriced, and 2-3 years behind in specs. The problem that i'm facing is that there is no mention of requirements from their website, not even pricing, and from what I've heard they're pushing pretty hard their own hardware, so much so that the warranty for their software is void if it runs on other software. What I'm looking for is anyone with experience with this specific software to advise on hardware requirements (CPU support , RAM usage, min vRAM , GPU the works), i'm interested in an AMD based workstation if the software is working with them properly.
  3. Budget (including currency): USD Preferred Range 1800-2000| Hard Cap 2500 Country: United States Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Non-Games: Fusion 360; SolidWorks; Blender; Premier Pro and other Adobe Creative Cloud Products; PrusaSlicer, Simplify 3D, Cura Games: RuneScape; SC2; Civ 6; Stellaris | Upcoming: Star Citizen(Maybe lol) and Chronicles of Elyria Expected Build Time-Frame: Late August 2020; potentially waiting slightly longer to allow for new product releases / price drops due to new product releases. Other details : Background: I just want to start out by saying I totally understand that gaming and editing machines don’t mix well. While I would want to maintain the ability to game comfortably, you’ll note from the games I play that it is not as primary of a feature of what I would like to accomplish with this. I currently use a 4-display setup with 2 being 1920x1080 and 2 being 3840 x 2160 I do not remember the models as I am cross country currently from my setup. 4k gaming is not very important to me but would be nice to do as currently I can still only go up to 1080 in games even on the 4k monitors due to the lack of strength in the current system. The primary intent of this machine will to create an editing/production machine for creating video and editing 3D files for content creation and 3D Printing. Videos will be working with 4k 60 FPS RAW and exporting in 1080 Primarily and 4k if possible. I am generally happy with the build below but would like general feedback/constructive criticism and help on the local storage solution: To the actual point of the post: I would like to ensure local redundancy with RAID as I have had drives fail in the past and while data was recovered or backed up externally, it was a headache to get up and running again with any type of speed. I will be getting a NAS in the future (Q1 2021) and have plenty of external storage right now to hold me over until that point. In the list I intend to us the M.2 for a boot and main program drive; and the HDDs in RAID 6 to allow 4 TB of usable space with two redundancy. As I have found again and again hardware RAID is recommended over software and is essentially necessary for RAID 6. However, I worry about write speeds with RAID 6 especially since I am having a hard time vetting a RAID controller as much of the information seems to be older. The Questions: What RAID controller would those with the knowledge recommend? Is RAID 6 overkill in a local machine? Is it even possible? Does AMD hinder this in any way and should I look to Intel? 4. I'm running through building the loop in my system and I am a very visual person. So I began looking for a CAD program that specializes in the design of custom built computers. It would ideally have a built in catalog of parts/components. Obviously it wouldn't be able to contain ALL of the little niche companies and pieces but those could be added by the user if the desired. If it was designed correctly it would greatly help in custom builds, water cooling loops, case mods, etc. I understand that there is the PC Building game but obviously I'm talking about something that is more professional and precise. If this exists then please someone let me know so I don't begin working on something that will be a tremendous waste of time.
  5. I could use some help building a rig for 3d modeling for 3d printing that would also work alright for gaming. I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to picking out hardware but lets put the budget at $2000 USD. Thanks!
  6. Hi. I've become an expert at choosing displays for myself, for gaming, work and graphics designing but when I think I know it all my dad come out with something I know nothing about. He asked me to look for some display for him for productivity and CAD/Solid Works designing. Can anyone tell me the specs I need to look at for this use? Thanks.
  7. Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for a workstation laptop that rivals/out performs the Macbook pro 16" for £2799 https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro/16-inch I am convinced there has to be a better and more affordable Windows Laptop that can do this and more. The main uses are AutoCAD, Light rendering, Video editing, Microsoft office, streaming etc. No gaming or anything like that required. Really hope you can help out, I am looking around and though im seeing decent laptops, I am not seeing many that rival this. Thanks in advanced all!
  8. Hello! FYI: I am an architecture Student in Vienna, Austria. I mostly rely on CAD Programs f.e. Autodesk AutoCad, Revit and other Programs such as SketchUp (with Vray), Photoshop and MS Office. I already have a pretty decent PC with a i5-8600k, 32GB RAM and a GTX 1070TI. It runs everything very good --> so I have a system that is capable of rendering and handling larger Revit files. I also have an Iphone 6s and an IPad Pro 12.9" 2018 which I use to sketch and draw. Currently I use a 5 year old Asus Gaming Laptop, which is awfully heavy and the battery died recently, which means I need to upgrade. I am somewhat in the apple ecosystem with Iphone and Ipad (which I very much like) but I am having trouble to decide between a new MBP 16" (probably would wait for antoher refresh this summer) and the coming Dell XPS 15 7500. MBP Thoughts: reliable (somehwat) Could use my Ipad as a secondary screen Radeon PRO drivers, which work well for some CAD programs, for tohers they don't would have to learn MAC OS would have to learn programwise a new UI would have to switch between UI of MAC programs and Windows programs when coming home, since when I am at home I want to use my Desktop new Shortcuts Bigger Battery than XPS 99WHrs/87WHrs Airdrop would be nice Would have to use parallels in order to use Revit, since there is no native version --> more expensive,100 Bucks more expensive (about 500€(540USD) XPS 15 thoughts: Very nice screen Most CAD progams are nicely optimized for NVIDIA cheaper very good looking but MBP is nicer would only have to install the programs and learn nothing new I think bigger and therefore heavier charging cable (I guess) Could easily switch between Laptop and PC --> now new Keyboard Layout and Shortcuts Biggest positive for MBP: ecosystem Biggest negative for MBP: learn new UI and having to switch between MAC and PC. These are just some toughts so let me please know if you come up with other arguments. I know I could run all other Programs too in Parallels but I just don't want to buy a Mac and then just use Windows anyway. Following Specs for MBP: 10 series I9 (not the HK but the second best one), 32GB RAM, Radeon pro 5500 with 8GB VRAM and a 1 TB SSD Specs for the XPS 15: same as above, 32GB RAM, 1660TI (probably a MAXQ) 6GB VRAM and a 1TB SSD. I am only considering these two Laptops eventough a larger G14 would be nice^^ Please let me know based on what Arguments which desicion you would make. Furthermore, thanks to everyone reading this and helping me out! I am a little biased towards the Mac but I know it would be somewhat a "dumb" desicion since not even all programs have a native MAC version and who knows which CAD-programs I will have to use in the future. The Laptop should last me for about 5+ years. Thank you in advance, Gerhard
  9. Hi all, I'm new to the forum, familiar with the content of Linus. I'm an mechanical engineer in Holland and have a lot of experience with solidworks and Inventor. Looking at all the game pc builds I started to make some plans of making one for myself to replace my old crappy laptop. Although I also want to be able to do some 3d modeling on it. Now in the experience I have the most parametric cad programs can only run calculations on 1 core (because solving a model happens sequential). I have recently worked on a pc that was equipped with a p2000 gpu, but when the model was struggling the gpu had a 3% load. So I thought, is a gpu a requirement for 3d work? Do I need as many cores as possible for CAD work? Hope the community can enlighten me a bit on the requirements for CAD programs as I don't see the use for many cores and gpu power ( except when rendering images of course) Aldo never saw a video about cad stations which I would like to see ;) Thanks in advance,
  10. Hi Guys and Girls, My first post here. I'm looking to get a gaming laptop that I can also do some light CAD work on. I've been looking at the Dell G5 with an I7-9750H and a RTX 2060 6GB. But I've heard they thermal throttle quite badly. Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative? I'm from the UK and my budget is about £1500 ($1866). Cheers.
  11. This will be my first gaming build so I am very open to suggestion. As said in the title, I am planning a 1440p 144hz mid-high range build hopefully under 3000$ Canadian rupee (~2133.76USD). This budget including a decent monitor. Please see my specs below and look out for some further questions I put after: PCPartPicker Part List CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor ($270.00) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($40.00) Motherboard: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard ($170.00) Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory ($106.99 @ Newegg Canada) Storage: Samsung 970 Evo 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ($170.00) Storage: Seagate Barracuda Compute 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($75.00) Video Card: Asus GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8 GB STRIX GAMING Advanced Video Card ($850.00) Case: Rosewill CHALLENGER ATX Mid Tower Case ($64.99 @ Newegg Canada) Power Supply: EVGA BQ 600 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply ($84.99 @ Canada Computers) Wireless Network Adapter: Gigabyte GC-WB867D-I PCIe x1 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi Adapter ($55.99 @ PC-Canada) Monitor: ViewSonic VX2758-2KP-MHD 27.0" 2560x1440 144 Hz Monitor ($450.00) Total: $2337.96 Total w/Tax: ~$2,640.00 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by 2020-04-27 13:23 EDT-0400 As you can see I chose the R5 3600 paired with a Cooler Master heat sink. From what I have seen this is a great value I'd love to hear your thoughts. Should I spend more and opt for the 3700x and ditch the heatsink? This will be a gaming only rig with some very minimal software development so I didn't see the need for an 8c cpu for the some time. Furthermore, I would like a 2070 super but am open to discussion here within nVidia for now(I.e. Would the 2060 be better value? How would it far with 1440p 144hz? Etc). More specifically, I wanted to ask about my decision to go with the ROG Strix 2070 super. Is this a good desicion? I know it is rated high in the tier list but why not save and get the EVGA 2070 SUPER BLACK GAMING for over 100CAD less and focus on good heat management in the case? Thank you for any constructive response you give, it is very appreciated!
  12. Hi, I'm trying to build a PC (preferably a mini ITX) for my 3D modeling and rendering, the PC would be mainly used for that purpose. My budget is around $1200 but would limit myself at $1500. I have not a lot of knowledge in the PC world but I need to get one since I have to use Solidworks. These are some parts I have found just exploring around and looking at different reviews etc. CPU: Intel i7 8700k GPU: Nvidia quadro p2000 Motherboard: Gibabyte z390 I Aorus pro wifi Mini ITX Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32gb (2 x 16) DDR4-3000 Storage: Western Digital blue 1TB m.2-2280 SSD Case: NZXT H1 (would include power supply and CPU cooler) According to PCPARTPICKER price is $1425 I have mainly based my choices from Javelin Tech Solidworks hardware recommendations (Here), would like any advice or parts or anything I can change to the parts list making sure that everything is comparable and will work together perfectly. Anything to keep the performance but lower cost would be amazing.

  14. Hi guys, I’ve been planning to build my second computer for a couple months now and was trying to find tutorials on how to model a PC build using Blender, SolidWorks, or any other software, as I’m planning on building a dark purple-pink themed “outer space” theme build (similar to Nebula, Jayztwocents’ personal build). I've got a parts list in mind but was hoping I could create a mock-up before actually buying any parts to see how things turned out, and make any necessary modifications. If anyone knows where I can find some videos, forums, or other information, or even have parts suggestions to match my theme that would we awesome. Thanks
  15. Hey guys, planning a new build for about 13-1400 candadian for gaming and CAD design. I'm not doing the design proffessionaly or even at a high level, just learning it as a hobby. Currently using blender and fusion 360. I game at 144 hz 1080p. Not sure if I should use a 3700x with a 5600xt OR a 3600 with a 2060 super. I don't know how much of a difference between the 3700x and 3600 there is for CAD and if using the GPU to render would make up for it. Which should I use? EDIT: the 3600 combo is much cheaper so I can fit in a 1tb NVME drive as opposed to 250 gb NVME with a 1tb HDD, as well as some fans for better airflow
  16. Hi everyone, Im back! My fiancee has requested her very own PC, and is on board with all the mods! She likes the Lian Li PC-011 Dynamic White, and really likes the look of distro plates and parallel tubes. Where can I get an accurate cad model of this case? Does anyone have a model of it? Ill be using Fusion 360 when I design the distro plates, which is why I would like to have the model. I could model it myself, but I cant find any good orthographic reference photos and full dimensions. Any help or advice is appreciated!
  17. Hey all, I have a job interview in a couple of hours and I'm wondering if it's worth using a stand alone mic instead of my phone. I use a CAD U37 USB mic daily(pretty average) and I'm pretty sure i can use it with a Type C adapter. Is this worth it or am i way overthinking this and need to calm down? Job is at a phone repair shop but it's the first time anyone's responded to my application in months.
  18. Hi, I am looking for help/suggestions on a new build for ArchViz using UE4 with a full real-time workflow using ray tracing. Budget: ~2000USD GPU: 2080ti CPU: AMD Ryzen 3800x or 3900x? Memory: 32GB ddr4 3600 or 64 ddr4 3200? Motherboard: Msi tomahawk Max Power supply: 650 watt gold Case: NZXT H510 ssd: evo 970 1tb m.2 sdd &1tb sata ssd I currently use a laptop with a 2070 which works but the workflow isn't very smooth. I am thinking of moving to a desktop to get the performance I want. This would be my first computer build so any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. My main question is the value of more cores for UE4 and if the jump from the 3800x to 3900x would be noticeable? My workflow does contain some CAD work in Revit and 3ds Max which would benefit more from the CPU as I understand it. Another question was regarding ram and if speed or size should be prioritized? I've been struggling to find material on a build for this particular workflow using fully dynamic lighting with little to no light baking.
  19. Hey all, LONG time LTT subscriber, first time Forum user and post. I am a design engineer and CAD manager working remote out of my home office. I need to upgrade my Samsung LS29E790CNS/ZA 27" 1080p ultrawide to something substantially better for my use case. I am not a gamer so some of the high end displays probably have TOO much to offer. My focus is in the quality of the image (specifically for vectors, line work, texts and then basic 3D rendering), productivity and quality of life. I am finding it very hard to select a reasonably priced (not the cheapest and certainly not the most expensive) option to look at as I feel less than knowledgeable on all the features and panel types. Can someone make some solid recommendations? Just remember that I prefer my setup to be usb-c / thunderbolt 3 based as I am often grabbing my laptop to travel. My specs: Lenovo P52 Xeon with Quadro P2000 Primary apps: AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Excel, PhotoShop. If you think I need to provide more info for a better recommendation, just let me know.
  20. As an Engineering student I'm looking to build my own PC. Knowing that I'll be running programmes such as CAD, occasionally running simulations and gaming, it seems the RX 580 is the best option. As stated in Linus's video on the subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-90qEJAVkU&t=451s Since this video was posted almost 2 years ago, I was wondering if there were any newer, more suitable cards you would recommend instead? Thanks in advance
  21. I'm planning to build a Desktop for my PhD work and have a budget of 1000£. Location: United Kingdom (UK) Currency: GBP (£) Below is the configuration that im considering but not sure if i might face any issue. I need a computation card for CAD and Matlab simulations. I'm planning to buy a used one from Ebay. I need a basic graphics card for diplay and CAD purposes. I'm planning to buy from Ebay. I do not need to invest on Monitor and peripherals as i already have them. I have a 1080P Dell monitor and i might add another 1080P monitor in future. I might also upgrade my primary display to a 4K monitor in future. I also have two 500GB 2.5" SATA HDD and one 2TB USB HDD which i want to reuse with this build. This will my first build but im a computer hardware enthusiast and have fair amount of knowledge on how to put this together. But i need help/guidance on whether this configuration might face any compatibility issues or any other issues that i'm not aware of at this point due to lack of experience. Please feel free to give your feedback, share your experiences, suggestions for change in this configuration, etc.
  22. I wanted to build a workstation for engineering design using solidworks. I don't usually perform simulations and stuff but I use it only for 3d modelling and assembly (sometimes large and over 3000 parts). And i use only a single monitor with VGA. I was currently looking into quadro series for a graphics card but i don't know how much better they are from the GT series. Budget is around 60000 rupees ~ 850$. Motherboard - Gigabyte H31 9th gen CPU - i5 9th gen 9400f RAM - 16 GB ddr4 crucial SSD - 240 GB SSD kingston Hard drive - 1TB GPU - Quadro preferably (was thinking of a k4200 since it's available for 18000 now on amazon.in) Please help me build a system. Thanks
  23. Hi i would like to ask someone help, I would like to build a workstation that would be for: Revit [i know that it use high single core performance but also multi but for less thing, also as much ram i can buy] Autocad [is near the same but it need's more ram] Dynamo[i don't know, it's a plugin fo revit] Sketchup [is a mix of cpu and gpu i can choose what it should use] Photoshop[ i know ram but don't know if single or multi core] Sap2000[ use all core high frequency and full speed ram] Lumion [ gpu and cpu mix] 3Dzephyr[ cuda cores, and i think multi core high frequency] OBS Premiere Studio I would like to play some games 4k if it is possible because, i thought that if i get a workstation maybe it can play even games high prestation. My budget would be about 1200 i can get 1500 if would help to increase much more prestation,( i'm in EU but the price are similar).
  24. Hello! I am currently in university (engineering) and I am looking for a laptop. I need it for CAD and photo editing in Photoshop. I was wondering if it's worth buying a workstation laptop from 2012-2013 (like a Thinkpad, EliteBook etc.). Would it run well the software I need for at least for 2-3 years? I found some in my country for 250-350$. Here are some spec examples: HP ZBook: i7-4900mq, quadro k1100m, 16gb ddr3 ram, 256gb ssd for almost 400$ HP Elitebook: i7-3820qm, quadro k3000m, 8gb ddr3 ram, 240gb ssd for almost 400$ Thinkpad W530: i7-3740qm, quadro k1000m, 16gb ddr3 ram, 128gb ssd for under 300$ P.S. I also have a decent PC at home, the laptop would be used at school and when traveling.
  25. Hi guys, I'm looking for a monitor that I can use to: -play games (not fps or competitive, but more story-focused games like the new Star Wars Jedi: fallen order) -use for occasional 3D modeling with SolidWorks or engineering simulation programs -watch movies and tv series. I was thinking about a 27 or, even better, 32 in monitor with a resolution of 1440p, an IPS panel with good colors, a refresh rate between 60 and 120 hz and a good pixel response time. My budget is around 300 euros. Does something like this exist on the market? My hardware configuration is: i7 4790 Asus Z97-A 16 gb ddr3 1600 hz Radeon RX 5700 Than you in advance for any suggestion.
