So my roommate uses McAfee, and she's finally lost her patience with how it's affecting her computer. There's a number of things she doesn't like, but if I had to pick out the one that makes her really rage, it's the fact that any time she lets the computer go to sleep, she has to remember to change the search engine back to google, since McAfee has decided that yahoo is the only "safe"option for some reason. She's finally gone ahead and ended her McAfee Subscription, but now she's wondering what she should get since she doesn't trust Windows Defender on her windows 11 laptop. Personally I think Defender would be ok, but in case I'm wrong, I'd rather ask where people seem to know best. Will answer any questions, and add information I've forgotten up here.

Is kaspersky safe under current circumstances? I've always used some kind of anti-virus software, and now my family and I are using Kaspersky. I am a bit worried that I should be using something different, I don't usually visit ultra-sketchy sites but also I'd like to have the comfort feeling of using some sort of an anti-virus software. If you wouldn't trust this software in this day and age, would you mind to suggest me one?

Source: https://www.engadget.com/john-mcafee-dead-200832456.html Summary John McAfee, notorious creator of the McAfee Anti-virus software has been found dead in prison at the age of 75. People found his body in his Barcelona Prison Cell where he was waiting to be extradited to the US to face tax evasion charges. Quotes My thoughts Well, this is some really sad news. No one should consider suicide as an option - if you are at that point, please seek help. That goes for everyone from everyday citizens to convicted criminals. No matter what you thought of the man, this is still pretty upsetting that a pioneer in the computing industry has passed away.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had this problem and knows how to fix it. I have a pretty recent new computer build and I have only used TotalAV for anti-virus software. Well I keep getting a pop-up that says Do you want to allow this app to make changes on your device? Anti-Malware SDK Agent, Verified Publisher: Avira Operations GmbH & CO. KG, File Origin: Hard drive on this computer. What is this? I have never had anything to do with Avira and cannot find one single file associated with this.

Kaspersky , a well known multinational cyber-security and anti-virus software provider is celebrating it's 20th Birthday , it was announced on this occasion that there will be a free basic Kaspersky Anti-Virus version being released to the public, The Software manufacturer hasn't had offered a free version of it's top tier software's except for minor free tools & basic free trials which runs it's course around over a month max . Their AV solutions have been on the very best AV choice list in terms of detection & stable program that is light weight & ease of use. General Software reviewers gave the Kaspersky AV solution 4 - 5 star ratings in majority of their reviews A reminder this is a basic version of the software , meaning you'll get the same time signature updates , Quarantine , Browsing protection , Email scan & the self protection feature to keep the software itself safe from attacks , Hey, it's better than Windows defender . For a lot more premium feature you do need to pay , like parental control, Secure Pay, Virtual KB/Anti-Keylogger , VPN, Customer support , The software release is set to be done periodically , so depending on the region You might have to wait to get your hands on the free version of the software , The first wave of free version release covers US, Russia,Canada,Sweden,China & a few other countries & rest of them will be released slowly . Countries like India, Hong Kong, Middle East, Africa, Turkey and Latin America will have to wait till September to get their hands on the software , Kaspersky?? Isn't that the Russian company? Kaspersky recently made a slight headlines as US Congress made a move to blanket ban the Kaspersky products from the PC used by government systems because of feared Manufacturer is based on Russia & might be succumbed to eaves drop from Russian political official influence. The company responded by saying it will provide it's source code directly to the concerned officials to clear up any kind of mistrust issues , Recently few of the US engineers who were working for the company was questioned by the FBI on this topic . But long story short , nothing came up . " As a private company, Kaspersky Lab has no ties to any government, and the company has never helped, nor will help, any government in the world with its cyberespionage efforts - KS Labs representative " I think it's a pretty decent move from the company , Lots of free AV solutions out there that offer free solutions , but with this amount of reliable detection & protection offered as free is a pretty good deal , hope they don't do forced registration to run a free version. What are your thoughts on this? POst your thoughts & comments down beloooooooooooooooow Source: https://eugene.kaspersky.com/2017/07/25/kl-av-for-free-secure-the-whole-world-will-be/ Free Version Link : https://www.kaspersky.com/free-antivirus

Hey guys, I'm currently considering to drop Avast for something else after hearing that it's spyware and at times even malware. Is it true that Avast is malware and spyware? If so, what are some good alternatives to it?

So, I finally installed an adblocker after hearing some advice about avoiding things like crypto mining bugs, but I noticed something.. I reset my browser to try and troubleshoot something and it turned off the adblocker. When I went to youtube, I instantly got hit with a scareware page and something started downloading! I stopped it right away before it finished. This sort of thing never happened before installing the ad blocker. I also can't seem to white list individual youtube pages. This is with adblock plus. So, does installing an adblocker turn off some other kind of security feature? Why does this happen?

Looking for a good anti-virus for my new PC with 8700k. Something with reliable security and does not hamper the system performance. Been using the free anti-virus in the old machine.

I have lived my life on a Mac running OS X. I figure it is time to get some experience with Windows! My biggest question is what anti-virus?? I've not had to worry as much about virus due to running OS X so I'm a little nervous about running a Windows machine. What are your guy's thoughts?

Hi. I use AVG Anti-Virus Protection Free on all of the Windows machines in my house. Recently on my main desktop, I have gotten an error 'Unable to Recognise License'. It is really frustrating because I don't pay for it, I use the FREE VERSION. I generally reinstall it but it gets really annoying (sometimes it happens on a monthly basis). Any solutions would be appreciated. Thanks, Alpha.

So I was looking at the comments on PC Gamer's "The Best Anti-Virus" guide, and I'm seeing a lot of people going on about how the only anti-virus you need is a brain, and that no-one needs them (anti-virus, not brains) at all. When I asked people on this very forum about what anti-virus software they use and what they'd recommend, I got a lot of the same responses, written in the most up-yourself way. Some people were helpful, though. Before reading on, just know that you are entitled to your own opinion, and what's written below may make some people mad. Others might agree, and I invite everyone to contribute to this discussion. Just try to see reason and think rationally before commenting. To firstly address those comments about how all you need is common-sense, that is partially true. A lot of teens and adults know not to click on suspicious ads, they know not to click on strange links, and they know not to install unknown programs they've never heard of. We learn these things from IT classes, videos or experience. But there are still FAR more people in the world who DON'T know these things. My sister, a very smart girl who didn't use any anti-virus, was downloading videos from what she thought was a trusted source. The other week, she came into my room with her laptop, infected with ad-ware. We had to reformat her laptop, but she lost a lot of pictures and work files. Anti-virus would have prevented this. Another example of people who don't know how to identify a possible virus source would be the elderly, or young children, or any person who isn't an Internet power-user. These people constantly benefit from using anti-virus software. The argument "just don't transfer files from other people's computers" (which I've seen a lot of) is totally invalid in many cases. If you're a UNIVERSITY STUDENT, OFFICE WORKER, GAME DESIGNER, OR ANY OTHER PROFESSION WHICH *RELIES* ON TRANSFERRING FILES, then you need to be protected from viruses on other people's devices. I personally received 22 Trojan horses and 47 worms from a high school friend who was transferring their project files to my device. I had anti-virus, so I removed them before they did any damage. If I didn't have anti-virus, I would have been totally fucked. There's also entire corporations which RELY on anti-virus to protect their files and their systems from attacks. Anyone who's seen The IT Crowd will know how one person can uninstall their anti-virus and fuck up an entire floor of systems. Schools use anti-virus on the staff's devices and lab computers as well. Despite my dislike for people who just disregard the need for anti-virus completely without considering the situation of others, there are some things I can understand about their concerns. A lot of decent anti-virus software (Norton, BitDefender) is costly. But there are free solutions (Avast, Avira) which operate just as efficiently as the premium ones; minus the fancy features. There are also many options which have a minimal impact on a computer's performance. In my opinion, it's perfectly fine for some people to not use anti-virus software. If that suits their situation and needs, then I don't have a problem with it. But I am sick and tired of seeing people make sweeping generalisations about whether or not people need anti-virus software. They need to know that some configurations suit different people and companies, instead of telling everyone "the best antivirus is your brain, dont be a dumb cunt and read what your clicking" (top comment on PC Gamer's Facebook post for "The Best Anti-Virus" guide).

Hello, I'm currently using the Bitdefender as my anti-virus for my pc protection. Although I recently stumbled on some forums that said a lot of false positives going on with the Bitdefender . I also have some trouble updating my xsplit gamecaster software as it seems to be conflicting with Bitdefender. So I'm wondering if there is any good alternatives for Bitdefender.

So, I've been with McAfee Total Protection for a while and I am starting to feel like it's a stupid program, whenever I host a game for me and my friends, I have to turn off the firewall. Whenever it runs a scan, it bogs down my system to where I have to either let it run and just watch YouTube Videos or cancel the scan so I can continue doing what I am doing. It's also costing me $90/a year for 3 licenses. Is there any other Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware programs that are better than McAfee or should I just stick with McAfee for my house?

Well, ever since I first installed it back on 7 with the new PC build and everything, I went ahead and bought the pro version giving me anti-virus coverage. Now I know it's not the greatest but it's the most trusted for me since I've been using back since XP. Windows 10 hates it. I had a back-and-forth email session with the devs on problems (Scanner would get stuck, settings wouldn't open) and they would send me software to test out while I was sending them info was rough. I hope they release a Windows 10 compatible version soon or I will end up going to another program and just stop using S&D as everything, unless I need a free malware scanner for another PC. Anyone else have the pro version of SpyBot here? If you have problems I'd like to see how many there are in total with the whole move to Windows 10.

Hello, around a week ago I installed Avast free antivirus and Malwarebytes at the same time and at the same day my computer started to blue screen like crazy. My pc has a history of frequent and random Bsod-ing but all were fixed after I installed a different copy of windows 8.1 from another copy of windows 8.1. Come to think of it my pc before I installed a different copy of the same os had both of them installed.... I shall update the post when I found the dump files. (I'm posting this from my phone) Thanks, LTT community.

After a discussion about anti-virus recommendations I was wondering what exactly are people using for anti-virus and how well do they work, I personally only use MSE (microsoft security essentials) and haven't noticed any malware on my computer for almost 4 years and I was curious about others experiences.
