  1. Hello there, I'm having problems with 10gbe, I recently purchased a Synology NAS 1819+ with the dual 10gbe network card from Synology, I also purchased the Synology single 10gbe port thinking it would work out of the bat in the computer, results it won't, even if it said that it was Windows 10 supported, I worked around this finding out the chip this single port card uses is Aquantia so I downloaded these drivers and my card was recognized, now, my Nas has 4 x 12TB seagate Firewolf Pro in SHR with 1 fault disk tolerance. And the rest is 1 read cache ssd for this array and another Raid 0 of 3x Samsung SSD. 2 Computers are connected to the NAS directly with Cat 8 cable. Results I do an iperf test and my speeds won't go over 5gb/s on one computer, and 3gb/s on the other. Asuming the PCI port speed is in play, I know one is running at 4x and the other computer at 8x, but its never reaching more than those 3gb/s or 5gb/s, I have enabled Jumbo Frames and everything. These are my speed test on write and read. Should I be looking at something better? Will I get better speeds if I change my network cards on the computers? I have seen people getting way higher speeds with spinning disks. Thanks SSD Raid 0 | Speeds 769.0 Write / 607.8 Read SHR 32TB | 442.3 Write / 308.3 Read
  2. Hey I need advise my pc has a 10gb Ethernet port and my nas has 2 1gb ports and does link aggregation I’m wondering which switch I should use for my home office and gaming setup I’ve looked into the Netgear nighthawk switches I don’t think I need a 10gb switch since only my pc has a port and I am the only really using it other than my girlfriend who’s only using Internet
  3. Hi Guys I have just bought a handful of Mellanox connectx-3 10gbe SFP+ cards on the cheap, I have tried the all in a Linux server to test if any of them should be DOA, but happy days all of them are registered and shows up beautifully in Unraid. But when I take the same cards and put them in a Windows 10 pc they just doesn't show up in the BIOS or in device manager? at first I thought it might not be supported, I can however find drivers for my exact Windows 10 version on Mellanox driver page? Any help or reason why I am an idiot who doesn't see the obvious problem would be greatly appreciated
  4. I run a production company, we currently have an 80TB RAID array (10x 8TB drives with a MegaRAID controller) shared across a 10GB ethernet network... it's been working great until the last month (was installed in April 2018). The 'server' has Windows 10 pro installed with a max of 4 network users editing or accessing content over the network (Netgear 10Gbe switch) via 3 macs / 1 PC. I didn't build the system and unfortunately the people who did apparently didn't install enough cooling as we had an issue last month where under heavy usage the HDD temps were rising north of 60*C. This caused severe performance issues, files weren't copying / verifying correctly and it was all a bit of a mess. I installed more fans, backed everything up, all has been fine since then. However, today the server had a major meltdown where during a fairly basic copy of about 60Gb of data, from one of the networked Macs, the copy failed and the network interface on the server crashed (it just disconnected and all the lights on the card went out) taking a restart to get back up and running. This problem re-occurred every time the data was copied, yet copying to the local drive on the mac was fine. The question is will I see better, more stable results by installing Windows Server 2019 rather than running Windows 10? And perhaps more error reporting too? I have a feeling the latest networking error has come from using a teamed connection through the Intel 10GB NIC I have installed so I'm going to reverse this, however I know this is a feature I could use from Windows Server if we had it rather than using the Intel utility in Windows 10. Thoughts appreciated
  5. Hi All, I own a small video production company which operates out of a vacant office within an existing office building, owned by a friend. This friend has allowed me to utilise their internal network for internet but, as one might expect, it only supports 1Gbps. I feel this this will put a spanner in the works as I am looking to purchase a 10GbE NAS and edit directly from that. How might I go about ensuring the devices I use can make use of the 10GbE connection to the NAS whilst whilst still utilising the existing 1GbE connection for the internet? Upgrading the entire office to 10GbE isn't an option as it's of no use to the other business that operates here.
  6. Can anyone here recommend or know of any adapter that converts USB 3.1 to 10GbE? Many adapters from USB 3.0 to Gigabit already exist. USB 3.1 supports 40Gbit data transfer so 10gbit Ethernet adapters should be possible. It should also be cheap as possible without sacrificing anything said above. Thx
  7. Hey together, i've been fighting with freenas and 10gbe for a while now and sometimes it gives me hope while mostly it's depressing as hell. In my signature you can see the Boss-NAS i'm using. rn it's equipped with an Intel X540T2 10gbe network card. One port goes to the Netgear XS708E 10gbe Switch while the other one goes (for testing purposes) to another Intel X540T2 in my Test-PC that has an i5 2500K and some MX500 SSD or whatever and runs Windows 7. The other port of this PC also goes to the same switch as the FreeNAS goes. Theoretically i'd have two separate 10GBe connections now but in the real world it's nothing like that. Doing Iperf (as well as Crystal Disk Marks to the RAID0 SSD's or the NVMe SSD) it gives me ~3.5gbe on the read side and 8.5gbe on the write side. That isn't reflected in real work perfomance either but i think the issue here is probably the SSD in the test PC. Here's the iperf i did: first one is PC client p2p second PC client over switch third PC server p2p fourth PC server over switch As you can see it doesn't matter if it's connected p2p or through the switch, read's always s*ck while writes show there is enough bandwidth actually. I DID get a real 10gbe connection between the PC's once with a p2p SFP+ connection where i could see my RAID0 SSD's going to full 1gb/s in both reads and writes but now that i've "upgraded" to a full 10gbe RJ45 environment everything seems to be collabsing. I DID also enable MTU 9000 on both ends just not the switch as that apparently has that set automatically and i can't find it anywhere in the setup. Even worse is the fact that my other PC, a 2600K with X540T2 and Windows 10 doesn't even remotely reach that but stays at 3gbe in both directions, even just from PC to PC without the NAS (switch in between obviously) So please, does anyone ( @Windows7ge) have an idea why everything is to terrible? lol. EDIT: What i think i'll try next is connecting the freenas with my SFP+ Card to the single SFP+ Port on the Switch and from there go with RJ45 to the X540T2's on the Test PC, as SFP+ once upon a time gave me 10gbe.
  8. Asking if anyone knows of any USB-C 10Gbe cards or Z390 mATX boards with 10Gbe onboard? Currently using a SPF+ pcie card, but looks like it will obstruct GPU cooling in a SFF case that I'm moving to.
  9. Hey Everyone, first of, hope you're having a wonderful day! I'm looking to try and set up a fiber backbone that will realistically be able to do 10Gb today and if possible move to 40Gbe+ later on down the line. current infrastructure is 2 servers, one for vm's /plex provider(unraid), the other acting as both high speed nas and longterm HDD storage (timemachine backups and the like)(freenas). on the network we typically see 15 devices at the low point with a maximum of around 40. everything from phones to laptops to proper workstations, networked receivers etc. Everything is currently running 1gbe rj45, except for workstations which are a combination of 2 or 4 1gbe links bonded few things: reason for fiber backbone is that the total length of the space is 100' by 50' 2 floors, not to mention that we'd be able to upgraded the receivers down the line if/when the need or opportunity arrises for a network upgrade. my current thinking for the network is to deploy Mikrotik switches because of their support for 4*10Gb SFP+ on inexpensive switches (crs305 and crs309). For router was thinking going for the RB 4011 since it has fiber and ethernet, and if I go Mikrotik for the AP's the 4011 is afforded with a 4*4 MU-MIMO on 5GHz and 3*3 on the 2.4 band. Thoughts? Proposed set up is as such, from top down view https://imgur.com/a/O5l8bKV For AP's I'm fairly open. Was thinking either Unify or mikrotik,
  10. anyone got there hands on one of these haven't seen anything much in the way of reviews are they any good. https://www.ubnt.com/edgemax/edgeswitch-16-xg/ https://www.servethehome.com/ubiquiti-edgeswitch-es-16-xg-review-quality-control-absent/
  11. Hello, when do you think 10 Gb/s will overcome/replace the current 1 Gb/s lan ports on virtually all motherboards/systems that are sold at date ? Do you have any doubts that it will ever happen ? Do you have any doubts that it will be available through 10GB-BaseT "RJ45" standard ?
  12. Browsing the FreeNAS forum I found a reference to this: http://routerboard.com/CRS226-24G-2SplusRM And here is the Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/MikroTik-CRS226-24G-2S-RM-Ethernet-manageable/dp/B00MDXAVWE Here's a less expensive version: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LYFJAYW/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_3?pf_rd_p=1944687762&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00MDXAVWE&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0ZYTK9K92GF676FE5JM1 It also has two 10GbE ports, the difference seems to be a lower level of RouterOS license. The features for license versions can be found here. This could be a really inexpensive way to get a 10GbE backbone into your network, with cables like these connecting a machine to the switch.
  13. Can anyone here recommend a reliable 10Gbit addin card for any PCIe slot. It should be capable of 1,2Gbyte/s transfer speed. It should also be cheap as possible without sacrificing anything said above. Thx
  14. Does anyone know if it is possible to build a high speed DAS/NAS using thunderbolt and GBe? Im looking to build a storage solution for editing workflows (video4k,lightroom,backup) for my thunderbolt3 iMac. It would also be a gigabit NAS for any other devices on the network, like gaming pc library. Would it be possible to utilize the thunderbolt connection from the iTX board to the iMac? Or any other thunderbolt enabled computers? Possible Build part list: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/LFsLr6 A theoretical breakdown: If possible: NVMe cash > 4x2.5"SSD RAID 4,5,0,10 > backs up to > 3.5''8TBx2 in RAID 1 > backs up nightly on network. iMac using thunderbolt or USB 3.1 to the server. (10GB to the mac would be great without using the 16xPCI slot) Other devices on the network will connect via GBe The two spare 2.5'' external cages will be used for hot swapping OS's and physically moving large files to other locations. The plan is to run windows in a VM via KVM using fedora plus a file server. The windows VM for living room TV gaming 1080p 30-60fps is more then enough. This "highspeed" box would then backup each night to a much slower main redundancy server elsewhere on the network.
  15. Hello, as 10GbE is rather new at consummer grade level, I found this usefull to start a generic thread for sharing experiences, setups, tips... My own experience is 3/4 month old... based on 2 intel X520-DA2 cards and two intel x710-da4 cards, One x710 is in a RS3614xs from synology other cards are in workstations and hooked to a used Arista 7124S switch grabbed on ebay (very very noisy... but do the job for learning !) All is linked with twinax direct attach cables (1m, 3m and 10 m DAC with SFP+ conenctors) I had bad experience with some 10 m active DAC cables from Cisco (reference SFP-H10GB-ACU10M which despite missing the + are SFP+ cables) : those cables are not recognized by the switch. I had chance to test in other switches and it was the same... (but they do work in direct link from machine to machine...) It seems that vendors are not willing so much to go for standardization on this field... So far, getting 10Gb/s performances is not too difficult when testing pure network side with iperf tool (https://iperf.fr/) .This tool allow to avoid bottleneck of drives etc... Tuning of intel drivers offers a lot of knobs, you feel like a newbie in the cabin of a jetliner... and all what online help says is basically "leave to default" which is not such a good way to educate users I guess. What is your experience with that and also other vendors hardware ? The rather difficult part is Samba and shares from the NAS... although thoeretical performances of the drives (SSD loaded in the NAS) should allow to saturate the link, it does not seem that simple and read performances are a little under what is expected : around 850-900 MB/s instead of the expected 1200MB/s (thanks to cache, write performance is Ok even for rather large files/transfer chunks) Also there is this LACP issue on windows 10 and intel... where both Microsoft and Intel are saying that the other part is reponsible, leaving basically Windows 10 without VLAN or link aggragation capability... (not a pure 10GbE point) That all for now, the aim was to start this thread and see what we can share !
  16. Hi guys, I am building FreeNAS, where I need fast transfers for big files. I would like to use 10GBE, I read at FreeNAS forum that Chelsio is the choice over Intel, however I would like to know your opinion on the subject. I think to go for Chelsio s320e-sr or Chelsio s310e-cr. I live in UK, and Chelsio is something you can not get in here. So in this case I would have to get it from US. Did any one of you experience some problems with Intel ?. Do you use 10GBE Intel with FreeNAS ? let me know. many thanks Bartosz
  17. Noob question. I have an old 3770k on a Z77 board with a GTX1080. Will there be a performance impact on the GPU if I install a 10GbE LAN Card or a PCI-E SSD since there are only 16 PCI-E 3.0 lanes available? Hope someone can answer. Thanks guys!
  18. So I finally have a 10gb connection from my gaming rig to server. But now I am hitting bottle neck because of the hard drive speed. Is there any linux software I can use to create a ssd buffer that takes the data first and automatically transfers to the zpool I have?
  19. I'm sorry if this question has been asked before or if this is the wrong forum. 1. Is there an at home way to get a 10GbE internet connection? 2. Is it possible to do so for WiFi?
  20. Hello, I am wanting to use a 10G SFP+ ethernet solution for my computers and my production servers. Here is the 10G SFP+ card I am wanting... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mellanox-ConnectX-2-Single-Port-SFP-10GBE-Network-Card-MNPA19-XTR-/271934252546?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f508b6602 If I buy two of these, can I just connect the two together, plus some daisychaining, and have a 10GBe link to my server? I am not familiar with SFP+ and fiber networking yet. Is there any additional things I would need other than a 10G switch? Please help! -Cam
  21. Hi, Just wondering if anyone else out there had this idea, I was thinking of using either an X99 or C612 board for pfSense with my 10Gbe network, probably something like an i7-6800K because of stupid fast clock speeds to drive routing and possiblity OpenVPN. I have an I've Bridge E3 server running pfSense right now and my iperf speeds have been underwhelming to say the least (tops out around 4Gbps). I could probably change some tunables but I don't ever see it getting much faster due to hardware limitations. Is anyone else out there running a setup like that for pfSense? Perhaps in ESXi, with an HTPC GPU passthrough? Heh. Lots of ideas...
  22. Can anyone here recommend or know of any adapter that converts USB 3.1 to 10GbE? Many adapters from USB 3.0 to Gigabit already exist. USB 3.1 supports 10Gbit data transfer so adapters should be possible. It should also be cheap as possible without sacrificing anything said above. Thx
  23. I have two issues. Issue 1: First I had to reinstall windows 10 on my "Server" set up. It auto installed drivers for both my motherboard NIC and my intel x540 T1 NIC. I noticed the driver configuration didn't look like the original install, so I installed the latest driver from intel for the x540. Upon installing I got this message: "There is an issue with Microsoft Windows 10 that prevents the Intel(R) Advanced Network Services (Intel(R) ANS) features from working correctly. You may install thea feature although you will be unable to create Inte(R) ANS Teams and VLANs. Do you wish to install the feature?" I hit yes, but found that the advanced tab disappeared. I couldn't find any work around. I tried manually installing the driver, reinstalling, downloading prior drivers ect. The only solution I came up with was uninstalling, rebooting and letting windows assign a driver to it. That's when the advanced tab came back. So my issue is all the features that I had previously from a late 2015 install are no longer available. The main difference I noticed is that you are limited to a RSS Queue of 8 rather than 16. Which I need an RSS Queue of 16 for my 12 logical cores. Issue 2: My second question is about windows 10 pro performance tuning. I have both my client and "Server" running windows 10 to support SMB3 shares and 10GbE connection throughput. I did some testing with RAM disks on both systems via the 10GbE connection. I copied 2 large files (15GB worth) from the server to the PC, and I got 850MB/s. When I copied from the Client to the Server I got 1.15GB/s!!! AWESOME!. So, I would like to know if there are any security features like Signing packets or anything like that for performance tuning. I know Windows Server 2012 R2 harped on transfer speeds when certain group policies were enabled. I went down that rabbit hole, and never got the speeds I'm seeing now, but I would like to see the full potential I'm seeing like the copies I got going from my Client PC to my Server. How do I get the full 1.15GB/s that I'm seeing when transfering from my client to my server going the opposite way (from my server to my PC) Fun note: Oh and if anyone is wondering why I hit a max of 1.15GB/s its probably due to overhead So here's what I've tried to improve these numbers. I've disabled any security measures like antivirus and real time scanning including Windows Defender. I saw slightly better results with 950MB/s from my client to the server. The server to the PC transfered at a consistent 1.15GB/s. The only thing that might make a change is a driver adjustment on my client PC as the driver version is: 3.10.162.1 with a release date of 4/24/2015 The Server Driver version is: 4.0.215.0 with a release date of 8/30/2016 I'm a little afraid of updating this due to the driver installation issue I had. Plus, I would loose the advanced feature of 16 Queues. I haven't read any white papers as of late, so I don't know if this is an old thing of the past, and 8 Queues is the most efficient??? Another question to be answered. Any help would be appreciated!
  24. I have a long series of questions that could be answered in a whole LinusTechTips episode: What is the purpose of Fibre Channel HBAs? Now you have generation 5 and generation 6 HBAs with speeds of 8/16/32 Gb/s transfer speeds using optical fiber for communication rather than copper wire. What is the purpose of FC today? They are marketed as for use with hard drives, but I see no INTERNAL connectors on them that would be suited for internal hard drives such as SAS or SATA connectors. So what is the purpose of them then? It looks like they are made for external communication only. But why use FC, why not use Ethernet, you have 1GbE, 10GbE, 40GbE, ... speeds for any taste and preference? Both wired and optical. So why would one use FC instead of high speed Ethernet? To be more frank, what protocols and drivers are involved with FC? Do you use TCP/IP or what is involved? When using the controller, will it just show other devices connected to it as PCI devices, or SCSI/SATA devices or what? Will it act as a hard drive controller or an Ethernet controller? What is the target hardware used for it, some special devices with FC, another computer with an FC HBA or a FC switch? If I were to build a Beowulf cluster spanning multiple computers, what would be the best way of implementing the usage of FC connections to connect the nodes in such a cluster? Are there any substantial benefits of using that instead of regular Ethernet? To tell the truth, why am I using all these four (five if we account for SATA) interfaces interchangeably? Is it expected to see these interfaces merge into one some day in the future? I guess then we should throw Thunderbolt into the mix and while we're at it why not HDMI and DP or ..... USB3?!? Even more confusing will it get when you have FibreChannel over Ethernet (FCoE)!!! Source information comes from Broadcom/LSI, Mellanox, etc... Glossary: HBA = Host Bus Adapter (used in distinction with "I/O controller" where the I/O controller mostly means the chip that handles the interface whereas an HBA is a complete solution involving the I/O chip, PCIe connector and other I/O connectors, i.e. a controller card). FC = Fibre Channel
  25. Many of us have outgrown the capabilities of 1GbE-based networks but don't have the budget to upgrade to the ridiculously priced enterprise 10GbE solutions. ASUS is attempting to change that after releasing their 10GbE switch for a "measly" 250USD and now a PCIe add-on card for 99USD. Finally the value proposition for 10GbE is reasonable, and for those of us running home/PLEX servers with 4K films this will be a very welcome upgrade. Another problem for people looking to do a whole-house upgrade was the need to rerun all their cabling and replace it with Cat6a to satisfy the shielding standards that 10GbE requires. By supporting the 2.5GbE and 5GbE standards, shorter runs of less than 40-50 meters will still be able to run at higher speeds (albeit not 10gbps).
