  1. Hi guys, at first please excuse if there are any flaws in my english, I am not a native english speaker (I am from Czech Republic)... And thank You Linus, Luke, Taran, and whole team from Linus Tech Tips for GREAT youtube videos, because these brought me here ;-) Now about my topic: I assembled something like a homeserver, it is kind of basic hardware I managed to get together from my tight budget, here are specs (it was originally bought as HP ML10 v2, but i changed few parts): CPU: Intel Core i3 4170 - 3,7GHz 2c/4t MB: original server HP with Intel C222 chipset RAM: 16GB ECC DDR3 1600MHz SSD: 120GB Kingston HDD: 3TB WD RED I plan adding second of each drive for RAID 1 redundancy, but right now... budget :-) Server is connected via 100/100Mbps link, public IP adress and it has no data limit. My plan is to run: - Plex server (mostly for 1 connected user at a time) - basic webserver - just DJ promo for my flatmate - estimated few visitors a day (he is not a celebrity yet, ehem :-D ) - basic ftp server mostly used for fastdownload of additional files for our upcoming CS:GO dedicated server(s) - 2 dedicated CS:GO servers - any dedicated gameservers that might run on remaining resources (Terraria, etc.) Now I will by really glad and thankful, if you would give me some feedback about my future plans, because even if I think of myself as kind of advanced PC user, I am Linux newbie (or better said - pre-newbie), so any advices and guides will be just great... I plan running two virtual machines, one with less resources for ftp/web/plex and second just for gameservers, so they won't ever be affected by expected CPU usage spikes, which WILL come frome Plex, or by ftp/web usage. Right now I am not sure how I will split server's resources between those two, but I think best option will be to give both a less than I predict they would need and then give it some testing time and add resources as needed and observed. Right now the system has VMware ESXI 6.0 installed, 2 VM's with fresh Lubuntu installed on both. Lets hope that mr. Google will help me enough with software installing in Linux... :-D As I said, any feedback, advices or warnings would be very appreciated... thx in advance for any replies :-)
  2. I have been thinking as when we use host's internet on Virtual machines. Can we use/passthrough internet from a os installed on vmware or virtual box to host like a hackintosh if my card is not supported by it.
  3. Hey, My name is Blake. Currently the company I am working for is wanting to move from XenServer to VMware. I have it set up currently in a lab environment to try to make sure exporting from XenServer and importing to VMware is going to work the way I want it too since we are doing the move on Easter weekend. I was able to connect to VSphere just fine the other day and now I'm getting an error stating it's not able to connect do to a timeout issue. I have rebooted both the server and laptop I am working with and they are on the management VLAN I created. Anyone know any thing to fix this? I could also just fresh install the ESXi install.
  4. Edit: Earlier I said it seemed to be working fine. Just now as I was copying stuff off of the hard drive onto another just in case, it stopped copying. Nothing opens from it now Edit 2: It must be an on and off thing. A couple restart later and it reappears and is working. Running Windows 10 Here's what happened. I had just finished installing linux mint in vmware. The vmware files always go on my 1tb HDD. In mint, I noticed that it wasn't auto adjusting to my screen resolution so I tried installing vmware tools. I'm a noob at that so that wasn't working. In mint, I went to the drivers application. I noticed there was an option to enable some sort of firmware for amd systems. (My computer A.K.A the host has an amd processor). I clicked it and told it to apply. Well after some time, vmware spat out an error "the file specified is not a virtual disk" and the vm just closed out of itself. No matter what I could not start mint back up as it kept giving me the error. I figured that something went wrong with the vm disk so I tried deleting it from the HDD. That went fine except it gave a few errors halfway through. I went to try and start Windows 10 in a vmware and I had the same error "the file specified is not a virtual disk". I started getting worried. I went through my HDD and clicked on a song to make sure it's just a vmware thing. The song wouldn't open. In fact all of the thumbnails of everything on the HDD were there but nothing would open, no pictures, music, videos, programs, you name it. I restarted my computer. After booting back up my HDD was missing. It wasn't in explorer and it wasn't in disk management. All of my programs that run off of that hard drive failed to load. I'm starting to shit myself. I restart one more time. (The computer was acting funny when I told it to restart). After ANOTHER restart the HDD is back and working like normal. Everything runs fine and opens fine. What happened? Anything I do inside of a virtual machine should not have effected my computer outside of it. Was what happened just a coincidence? Is my HDD failing? In Event viewer it showed a lot of new "Warning" labels under "System". When I mean a lot I mean 14,735 new warning events. The two common events were:
  5. Looking to get this processor for my virtualization lab and gaming build. I see this is a Haswell refresh model and 2 years old. Is there a newer version out you guys recommend? Looking to get a Xeon for the virtualization gains with hyper threading while saving some money/power because I won't need an integrated GPU on the chip.
  6. Hi, As I want to get into ios development I need a OS X platform which I dont have so I decided that vmare fusion might do the job but I have a amd cpu and Macs use a intel cpu so would vmware fusion still work with a amd cpu? Thanks
  7. I have Windows Server 2016 setup in my laptop using VM Ware. i have connected 2 network adapters to this VM, which is my Ethernet and my WIFI adapter. The Ethernet is connected to another laptop which is running server 2016 as a DHCP server. my second network adapter is the WIFI adapter which is connected to my router that provides IP addresses from its own DHCP. my problem is i can connect to this router and even get an IP from it but i cant ping it or the other computers connected to it. i cannot also access internet from it. any suggestions to troubleshoot this would be very helpful. Thank you.
  8. So I have assembled a machine that I am using as a VMWare ESXI (v 6.7) host. I have successfully installed a Windows 10 VM on said host and it powers on and runs as one would expect. I then attempted a Ubuntu VM (18.04) and it successfully installs but after about a minute of uptime after the initial installation, the VM suddenly powers off and any attempts to power it on again result in this error: "The operation is not allowed in the current state". The current state is Powered Off. My Windows 10 VM still works just fine. I've tried Ubuntu 18.04 as well as CentOS 7.5 and get the same result after creating VMs using both. Any ideas here?
  9. So I started a similar topic on TH but then I realized this is probably a better place to ask. I am trying to install Sims 3 on a VM for my niece (last time she had access to my pc for an extended period I got malware). The problem is that Sims 3 checks your gpu for compatability and if it isnt listed in the games gpu list then you have to add it manually. The problem is that when running a VM the virtual gpu obviously isnt on the list of supported gpus and it adding it is very hard since every manufacturer has custom made rules for their gpus. I tried tinkering and converting the rules from other manufacturers to get the virtual GPU to work but to no avail. The thing is that the game tries to set video settings to suit the gpu (which you later can change), but if it isnt recognized it wont even give you the chance to set the settings. (EA.. pls...) I got the idea that if I could change the VM gpu information in the registry to have identical information to say an nvidia 460, the game would start propperly. The thing is tho I dont really know how where to start, I need the dxdiag to output identical display info as it would with a supported gpu. I am running windows 10, I would switch to linux and make it easier on me but I cant because of adobe. Worst case scenario I might have to dualboot linux and then through that run a VM with a gpu passthrough with AMD and Nvidia at the same time (the only 2 gpus I own, sadly fx8350 doesn't intergrated graphics). Lastly; is there any possibility to create a virtual device that would mimic a gpu just cosmetically? As in only look as if a gpu is connected so that Sims can let the game launch? Thanks in advance, 1k cookie points to whoever solves this.
  10. Hey, right now i have a hp proliant server and the CPU isnt cutting it for my needs anymore. I am planning to upgrade to an I5 or something similar for some more performance. I figured this would be a good time to play with VM stuff on a server. My current server has 4x4TB drives in ZFS raid an the OS running on a 32gb ssd. If i wanted to recreate that in a VM how should I go about doing that? From what i've pieced together it seems I should install esxi on a usb/sd card, create the VM and give it space from the SSD and 4x4TB drives then create a ZFS raid with the 4TB drives? (I also read something about just passing the controller through to the VM?) Basically I just want to let this VM have access to a big 12TB mount for movies and tv shows and such. It doesnt need to be ZFS it's just what i've worked with. Or should I do raid 5 from the motherboard and assign the VM the one partition instead of doing software raid in the VM. This is the hardware I am planning on using https://pcpartpicker.com/list/gwmJGf (cheaper variant) https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZBGNZ8 Thanks!
  11. Hey guys, I'm working on setting up a personal ESXI server that I can learn and play around with lots of different stuff. I have an i7-2600, 16GB 1333MHz DDR3, Intel DH67CL motherboard, a Zotac GTX 750 Ti, two 120GB Sandisk SSDs, and some random HDDs of varying sizes. The issue I have run into is that ESXI doesn't support "fakeraid" solutions like most onboard controllers provides, and I had intended to use the 2 Sandisk SSDs as a boot drive in RAID1. I need help deciding where to go from here. I've looked into getting an actual hardware RAID controller but the couple cheap ones I've found are still "fakeraid". I'm wondering if I should just give up on ESXI, although part of the reason I wanted to use it is because I know how huge it is in enterprise data centers and I wanted to get some experience with it. I've googled for an hour or two now and some people say I should install ESXI on USB, however that is both 1) slow to boot and 2) if the USB fails then all the settings are gone and I'm not quite sure how I'd back them up/restore them easily without manual configuration. I've also seen people suggesting alternatives like Proxmox, or XenServer. One of the things I'll be experimenting with on this server is FreeNAS, I'm new to it but I'm wondering if it has the capabilities to act as a virtualization server? Then I'd just have FreeNAS as my base instead of ESXI. Very new to this and at the moment quite discouraged so advice and suggestions on where to go from here is appreciated. Thanks guys. EDIT: Googling some more looks like Proxmox doesn't support "fakeraid" either. So the more general question is how can I get the redundancy (RAID 1ish) I want for whichever solution? If I install it on a USB and the USB fails, is it that hard/time consuming to recover from?
  12. I have been developing an app on my OSX Sierra Guest (Windows 10 Host) and after updating VMWare Workstation, I get that first image during the VMWare boot screen, and that second image (Kernel Panic) during the apple logo boot screen. For some reason, recovery mode isn't working (I am holding Windows+R while it boots, right?).
  13. Hi, i'm looking at a replacement SAN for our esxi hosts, we have about 20 vm's running between 2 hosts, currently using a 4Gb link direct to the SAN, however.. our SAN is due to be replaced and repurposed and i'm looking at upgrading to 10Gb Ethernet direct to the hosts with at least 36TB of Storage with possibility to expand if needed. i've had some quotes back for just over 10k in GBP, and would like to see if i can do better, i'm not mega familiar with what sans are out there and which ones to avoid, so i'm really looking for recommendations, it must have ideally quad 10gb ethernet, at least 2U, but can be larger if needed doesn't matter. reliable and robust for 24/7 running, obviously the configuration of the actual array will be decided one we know storage capacity and amount of drives. this is for a educational environment not for myself, so it MUST be reliable. Cheers guys !
  14. So, this question is kind of long and technically 2 seperate questions but they relate so I'll keep them together. At the minute I've got 4 systems on my wired network: My desktop which has an i7 4790k in it An IBM x3650 M1 (2x Xeon e5450 36GB Ram) which runs virtual desktops and virtual apps An IBM x3650 M2 (2x Xeon X5650 64GB Ram) which is my main lab server as well as running VMware vCenter And, my main server which runs a router as well as Windows Server 2016 that serves as my NAS and Plex server. This machine is really underpowered with only an AMD a4-6300 dual core and 8GB of ram. I really cheaped out on it but it runs fine. The three servers are all running VMware ESXi 6.5 and are connected to the vCenter Server on the x3650 M2. The main server only has a dual port gigabit card in it which has one port for WAN and the other goes to a 24-Port gigabit switch which has everything else connected to it. So everything is running on a standard 1 gigabit connection to the rest of the network. There is an exception to this. I've got single port 10 gigabit SFP+ cards in both my desktop and my x3650 M2 which have a DAC cable running between them. What I want to do is buy another single port card for my x3650 M1 and 2 dual port cards to put into my main server. I can't do this with the current server as its only got one PCIe slot (it's ITX) which has the dual gigabit card in it. I intend to upgrade my desktop to an i7 8700k in the coming months so the 4790k system will become the main server and the POS a4-6300 will be retired. So i'll be able to do dual 10G cards then. For now what i will do is get the dual 10G cards for the x3650 M2 instead. I intend to run fibre from the two dual port cards, to each of the other systems with a 10G card, so there'll be one central system with 4 SFP+ ports that connect to everything else. With this, what I hope to do is setup a VM on the server that will act as a 10G switch. To the switch VM, I will use PCIe passthrough to give the VM direct access to the NICs and I'll give it a 10G port on the vSwitch as well so the other VMs can communicate with the rest of the network. I want to know if it is possible to setup a VM to act purely as a switch between essentially 5 different network ports. If this is possible with PfSense it'd make life easier cos i can just do it with the one VM instead of having a seperate router and switch. The other part of my question is. When I build my 8700k system, I want to only have 2 NVMe SSDs in it, and no SATA drives at all. My plan is to setup a 3TB iSCSI drive on my NAS and have my desktop connect to that for all my games and user files. I also want to move the drives form the IBM servers to the NAS to run all the VMs from network storage (I might have to buy a SAN disk shelf for this and use a SAS expander but that's not a problem) I know it's technically possible but, is iSCSI and a 10G network actually stable enough to support this? And, how much CPU horsepower will it use (if any). I'm sorry if I've confused you people but I like overly complicated things Thanks for any help.
  15. So, i want an online web server and a network shared VM in the same machine. The base operating system is Windows Server 2016, How do i connect my non-vm physical computers (one is XP 64bit, other is Win10 64bit) to a local VM in my server so i can share the horse power of my server to other users in my network (connected by Ethernet) i have a rough idea of incorporate ESXi but it probably won't work. 16. Can Someone please help me in installing Mac OS High Sierra on Vm ware. I'm having the iso file for the operating system.
  17. I'm planning to make a VMware rig for me and my brother because it's tiring to wait for our turns in using the computer. So to save money in another rig and in electricity bills I came up with an idea of a VMware rig for 2 people. Here are the planned specs: i7 3770 8 gb or 16 gb ram Z77/Z68 motherboard 240 gb ssd and 1 tb hard drive Sapphire RX 550 2gb (will upgrade after a few months) Is this enough to play Middleearth shadow of war and fortnite battle royale in simuntaneously in 720p? Most of the games we're going to play is just esports or easy to run games.
  18. Hello, I've installed VMware Workstation 14 Player and when I go to edit virtual machines settings I don't see "Preferred mode" drop-down for some reason. I'm using Windows 10 Pro 64-bit and I have the latest UEFI firmware installed. My CPU is i7-6700k and is capable of VT-x I have VT-x enabled in UEFI I have disabled Hyper-V I have the latest VMware Player installed It should be like this:
  19. Here's an alternative way to install windows 95 for those still having issues installing windows 95 manually without the floppy setup disk what you need: .DOS on a floppy or on an image (.flp .img) .Windows 95 cd .VMWARE player (it's free) or virtualpc (I recommend VMWARE) .Magiciso (the free trial version will do) .a copy of MSCDEX.EXE and oakcdrom.sys (both can be found online) MSCDEX.EXE: http://www.techadvice.com/tech/M/MSCDEX.htm oakcdrom.sys: https://goo.gl/YTZ3nL Magiciso: http://www.magiciso.com/download.htm step 1 create a new virtual machine (make sure to add a floppy image drive if you are using vmware) step 2 put your dos floppy/image in or mount it and install dos step 3 download and install the free version of magiciso open magic iso go to new - floppy - 1.44 find a copy of mscdex.exe find a copy of oakcdrom.sys (generic cd rom driver that works with dos.. might have to try another if it doesn't work) RENAME the oakcdrom.sys to cdrom.sys drag both these files into magic iso on the floppy disk we just created save the file close magic iso find the file we just saved in your explorer change the extension from .ima to .flp (if you are using vmware) or .img (if you are using virtualpc) (if you can't see the extensions you're going to need to change your folder options to show extensions) google it. it's easy to do step 4 go back to your virtual machine mount the floppy image we just created a:\ copy mscdex.exe c:\ copy cdrom.sys c:\ (don't forget to rename oakcdrom.sys to cdrom.sys in step 3) step 5 find config.sys in your c drive type: edit config.sys now add a line that says this device=c:\cdrom.sys /d:mscd001 exit and save step 6 find autoexec.bat in your c drive type: edit autoexec.bat now add a line that says this c:\mscdex.exe /d:mscd001 exit and save step 7 restart the computer or virtual machine step 8 we're still not done yet now move to your c drive and type mscdex.exe: /d:mscd001 /M:5 /V /L:d /S /K (this part /M:x refers to the amount of buffers your drive has.. it's either 4 or 5. usually 5) step 9 create a blank floppy image either in vmware or magic iso then mount that new one put your windows 95 cd in the cd drive type: d:\ setup.exe step 10 it should be booting windows 95 now now you might run into troubles when it tries to install the other drivers it might ask you for windows floppies even if you're using the cd version which I never understood but anyways, you can find all of these drivers on the windows 95b cd if you have it they're all in cab files so you'd need to extract them 1 by 1 and put them on floppy images to use them. (huge pain) but I actually just got it to load the drivers off the win95 cd by just trying it over and over again until it worked. it might have been because I either did or didn't restart after putting in the windows 95 cd can't remember, but I'd try both if you're having trouble all in all windows 95 is incredible wonky to install in a virtual machine. I highly recommend using VMWARE and not virtual pc for this one. If you didn't have a hard time installing this.. you got incredible lucky make sure you check to make sure windows95 is seeing your cd drive if not go to the add new hardware wizard in the control panel and see if that detects it (Note: I tried to install it without installing MS-DOS first the first time by using fdisk and format then creating the autoexec.bat and config.sys manually. Even though I did this right I ran into problems when windows started installing. Installing dos before hand made it run a lot smoother for some reason. Ask around and find a copy from a friend. A lot of people still have a copy lying around that they don't care about)
  20. Hello, I need some general input for building a VMware EXSi, on which multiple workstations would be installed. Budget I have thought of is around 800USD. The dilemma is whether I should go for AMD ryzen or rely on Intel?? How much memory should I aim for? Also, power usage is to e looked into. Thanks Shashank
  21. Guyz, SUGGEST me a good motherboard for i7 4770K which can run for next 5 years It should be under 10K INR. (Indian Currency) Also I wont OC the CPU and will be using stock cooler. Right Now I wont even put a graphic card since this not being used for gaming but visualization. Rest Ill be using 8x1 DDR3 RAM with stock fan and Corsair vs450 W. Let me know which Mobo will be good and have strong reliability. Also Do I need SSD to install my Winows 8.1 Pro over it or Normal HDD would do. ? FYI, visualization might have good I/O over the disk
  22. Hello World! I'm about to move in to a new house in a couple of months and I want to setup a reliable home network in the house, I came here to get some support from you guys regarding some stuff but first things first. I'll explain my idea first: The home is wired with a CAT6 Ethernet cable. I'll have 2 different internet connections from 2 different ISPs Connection to ISP 1 will be made using a PowerBeam Connection to ISP 2 will be made using a NanoStation M5 Both cables from the PowerBeam and NanoStation will be plugged into a server pc which will contain 3 NICs The Server PC will have VMWare ESXi installed with 2 virtual instances An instance will be pfSense that'll be configured with Load Balancing between the first and second NICs (Between ISP 1 and ISP 2) Then an unmanaged 8 port switch will be connected to the server's 3'rd NIC port and all of the Ethernet ports in the house will be connected to the switch The second instance in ESXi will be a machine running Ubuntu which will be configured with Plex Media Server, CouchPotato, Sonarr and some other useful software. Now on to my concerns regarding this setup: Can someone suggest me parts for the server build! Which MB to get and which CPU and why ... Regarding the second instance in ESXi, should I use Ubuntu or Windows Server? This is the first time I'm setting up a machine with ESXi so I'm asking is it possible to make pfSense connect directly into my NIC chips? Is the idea possible? What consequences will I face? What do you guys suggest on changing? I'm open for suggestions. Thanks in advance
