Edit: Earlier I said it seemed to be working fine. Just now as I was copying stuff off of the hard drive onto another just in case, it stopped copying. Nothing opens from it now Edit 2: It must be an on and off thing. A couple restart later and it reappears and is working. Running Windows 10 Here's what happened. I had just finished installing linux mint in vmware. The vmware files always go on my 1tb HDD. In mint, I noticed that it wasn't auto adjusting to my screen resolution so I tried installing vmware tools. I'm a noob at that so that wasn't working. In mint, I went to the drivers application. I noticed there was an option to enable some sort of firmware for amd systems. (My computer A.K.A the host has an amd processor). I clicked it and told it to apply. Well after some time, vmware spat out an error "the file specified is not a virtual disk" and the vm just closed out of itself. No matter what I could not start mint back up as it kept giving me the error. I figured that something went wrong with the vm disk so I tried deleting it from the HDD. That went fine except it gave a few errors halfway through. I went to try and start Windows 10 in a vmware and I had the same error "the file specified is not a virtual disk". I started getting worried. I went through my HDD and clicked on a song to make sure it's just a vmware thing. The song wouldn't open. In fact all of the thumbnails of everything on the HDD were there but nothing would open, no pictures, music, videos, programs, you name it. I restarted my computer. After booting back up my HDD was missing. It wasn't in explorer and it wasn't in disk management. All of my programs that run off of that hard drive failed to load. I'm starting to shit myself. I restart one more time. (The computer was acting funny when I told it to restart). After ANOTHER restart the HDD is back and working like normal. Everything runs fine and opens fine. What happened? Anything I do inside of a virtual machine should not have effected my computer outside of it. Was what happened just a coincidence? Is my HDD failing? In Event viewer it showed a lot of new "Warning" labels under "System". When I mean a lot I mean 14,735 new warning events. The two common events were:
-
- hard drive missing
- vmware

Has anybody tried migrating their .vhdx file from a physical drive of a machine to a virtual machine .vmdk in vmware? Trying to bring my Win7 environment to a virtual environment on my desktop in vmware. I converted the .vhdx file to vmware's .vmdk format using STARWIND V2V converter but it somehow made 2 .vmdk files, 1 was 1kb and the other was the actual size of the disk which is around 160 gigs. It was suppose to be easy by just swapping .vmdk files in the VM folder but ran into some issues. Any input would help.

Hello LTT community I have some interesting new to share with the tech community and what better place to share it than here. I have been doing a lot of research on hypervisors and specifically GPU pass through to virtual machines, in my research i have found a number of skeptical and contradictory articles and posts. I plan to discuss and share my findings, first off ill list my system specs, installation of esxi 6.0.0 (aka vsphere), the creation of my windows vm, pci passthrough and finally gaming and benchmarks ( graphs to come in the future) The System: Bequiet Silent Base 800 Asus x99 deluxe Intel I7 5930K (OC'd to 4.1GHz) esxi stability is important so im not pushing it. Kingston fury x 16gb 4x4 2133mhz kit (upgrading to 32gb 4gbx8 2666 gskill kit) Bequiet Dark Rock Pro 2 Cpu cooler ( minor case mod to fit, one of the tabs on the side panel fan cover had to be cut down) EVGA GTX 970 SSC (for pass thru) PNY GTX 750ti (for esxi since the x99 platform has no igpu) Corsair HX 850i 850w platinum powersupply samsung ssd's; 256gb 950 pro for VM's and 250gb 850 evo for storage and a few other drives not configured in vmware yet Other components include an APC 1500va UPS for good measure ok now on to the installation, I started by downloading the free version of esxi the fired up vmware workstation to create a USB image of esxi so i didnt eat up my valuable drives instructions i followed are here http://www.vladan.fr/install-esxi-6-to-usb-as-destination-or-have-it-as-source/ once that was create i installed the usb in an nzxt internal usb extension that also has 2 usb "A" ports fire up the PC and mash F8 to get boot devices and pick the esxi usb next go to the address esxi gives you as there is no gui so your gonna need a laptop or a second computer to configure esxi from the web gui is how you configure esxi for pci pass thru and create your vm First you have to create a data store, i called mine VM's and Games as the evo would be attached to the vm as a secondary vdisk just for games click on storage, click create new data store and follow the steps and add the drives you want now click on virtual machines, click create virtual machine, the nice part about creating a vm with esxi is you have the ability to use the client machine as the CD/DVD drive so you can mount and install images from a laptop remotely my vm is using 8gb of ram and running on 4 virtual cores and as a side note use vmxnet3 for your network as e1000 and e1000e have issues getting to the internet once your virtual machine is up and running with Windows 10, (im using build 1607 for my vm) shut down your vm now we will add pci devices click on manage right under host then click the hardware tab, note that not all devices can be passed thru, on the devices that say disabled you can check the box and click toggle passthrough and that device will be unavailable to the host and now be available to add to your virtual machines. once youve toggled all the devices you want you will have to reboot the host before the devices will be passed through Once the host is back up and before you start your vm, click on virtual machines and click on your vm, click edit and add other device, select the pci devies you wish to add to your vm the click save now before you boot up you vm and this is IMPORTANT if you OWN an NVIDIA Consumer GPU (GEFORCE CARDS) you will have to edit the config file and add 2 lines. to get to the config click virtual machines, click the machine you want to edit, click edit settings, click the VM options tab, click advanced and scroll down and click edit configuration now that the config is open click add parameter and in the KEY: hypervisior.cpuid.v0 Value: FALSE and the second parameter is KEY: pciHole.start Value: 2048 not that in the first parameter that is a ZERO after the "v" Now your ready to start your VM fingers crossed you have an output on your display and your gpu passthrough is working correctly once your back into your vm you will need to download and install nvidia drivers and in device manager uninstall and delete the SVGA adapter. Now running games is to my eye showing now loss, i have yet to notice any frame rate dips Playing the Division i was getting between 35 and 45 fps on ultra @ 1440P and on a base windows install i was getting the same, i will however post some benchmarks of my vm and try to get some benchmarks of the pc running these games on windows on the baremetal if you have any questions dont hesitate to comment or PM me Thanks

Sup! So my cousin wants MAC OS ( Whatever the latest version is) on his computer, He wants to use Garageband and some of the Apple media production programs. I than downloaded VMWARE on his BEAST system. (Click here) and tried to get Mac OS onto the program, The issue is, I don't have a MAC computer or any Apple computer.. All the review guides on Hackintosh say you need to use a Macbook or whatever and rip the OS off of them.. Any help..? I just need the ISO for the O.S. so I can just put it onto VMWARE. He has his BIOS setup and everything is fine on the hardware and software side I believe.. P.S. He now has GTX 980 Classified Edition now, Not his AMD card.

Hello everyone, I have another dilemma here. I currently run VMWare's ESXI (free) on my server. At one point, I was thinking of buying it, because I'll be adding an additional CPU to the second socket. Right now, it is just the one CPU and 32GB Memory. But, I want to expand and add more raw power. Anywho, the following is the issue: Cost. It would cost me over $2000 to buy VMWare and another $3000 per year for the required/mandatory support license. That is insane. The server is the central hub for my small business (IT Company). It harbors our website on redundant VMs, monitoring tools, patch management, VPN, and support desk. Not a lot. We use Google Apps for our e-mail and no hardware heavy apps like SQL. I don't see the cost effectiveness of VMWare to us. I don't mind paying for a solution, but the cost of VMWare outweighs the benefits, since we don't use 90% of the features. What I'm looking for in terms of a system is the following features: - Support for Windows OS up to Server 2016 - Support for Linux (mainly Ubuntu Server) - Support for up to 64GB memory - Support for over 8TB of disk space storage (I do like the feature for VMWare's storage pools) - Preferably a web-based remote management feature (not required, but I don't much fancy VMWare's vSphere, it is too clunky and slow) I've looked into unRAID, but not a fan of it.

I have an intel skylake core I5 6400 @ 2.70GHZ Quad Core, GTX 960 2GB, GT 740 2GB, ASrock Z170 Pro4. I would like to dedicate my GT 740 2GB to a Windows 10 VM so I can game on it whilst leaving my 960 on the host. Please can someone help, my mouse and keyboard work on the VM and are dedicated but I need the GT 740 to be dedicated to the VM. The second display is connected to my 960 and I would like to get the VM to use the 740 to do the hard work. Thanks in advance -Jadi

Hi, I'm on a tight budget but I need a decent build to run multiple Vm instances 24/7. Currently looking for a used Xeon cpu with at least 16 cores, because I can't afford them at full price. I need two cpus to fit it on my Asus Z10PE-D16 WS motherboard, I can't decide yet whether to take E5-2675 v3(non ES) 16 cores 32 threads or E5-2698 v4 20 cores 40 threads(Es version) , both with similar price . I really want to get E5-2698 v4 but I don't know if it will have issues with my mainboard/bios. Here is my build Asus Z10PE-D16 WS 480 usd Crucial 64GB Kit (16GBx4) DDR4 2133 330 usd Superflower Leadex Platinum 750w 150 usd Samsung 512GB SSD 950 PRO NVME M.2 320 usd Cpu E5-2675 v3(non ES) 16 cores 32 threads *2 or E5-2698 v4 20 cores 40 threads*2 8,00/1,000 usd Crappy case and Vga total 2,800-2,200 usd Is this build good? I'll have around 32-40 cpu cores and 64gb ram for my workstation, is there anything else I should add or remove? Please feel free to recommend. Oh one thing, is this seller on ebay legit? http://www.ebay.com/usr/xtrememicro This guy has like 50k positive feedback, yet I can't google him or find his identity on internet. That looks fishy to me but I still want to buy his cheap Xeon cpu.

Hello, the LTT community! So I have my server and it was sitting at around 3GB when I did the data transfer, however now my httpd process (apache) will not start and when I logged into VMware I found that all 100GB of storage was used! Is this a hardware (ie: my drives are failing (although if it was this, I would have seen an error from iDRAC), the drives are overlapping data and a reboot can solve it, etc.) or is this software (ie: virus, DDoS, etc.) My host provider kicked me off the network due to strange amounts of usage from my account, so I am wondering how long this has been going on. Please help. I leave for Norway in two days and NEED this server operational. Sincerely, Joseph

I am trying to get internet working on a OSX el capitan VM on my Windows Host Machine. I am on windows 10. In VMWare I have guest tools installed on the OSX VM. In windows I have two VMWare Network adapter drivers installed. VMNet1 and VMNet 8. I have tried a combination of sharing those with a combination of bridged network for the vm and NAT network for the VM along with either DHCP enabled within OSX and just entering everything manually. I am very confused at this point because nothing has worked so if anybody is experienced with VMware that can help me it would be much appreciated, I don't know what else to try.

So I installed VMware on my Windows 10 pc Specs: CPU - 5820k (6 core) GPU - 970 4GB (3.5GB NVIDIA is a munch of liars) Mobo - X99A SSD - 1Tb 850 evo RAM - 64GB I enabled "Acccelerated 3D Graphics" enabled and set Vram to 2GB. When I launch OS X I am still limited to 128MB of Vram. My end goal is to install FCPX and Garageband but am unable to because "Your computer's video card does not meet the minimum system requirements."

Hello everyone! Today I am writing this thread to ask everybody what I should do with two dell r710 servers. These servers are equipped with two Xeon E5-620 4 cores 8 threads a piece, 32GB of ram, and 2TB of storage each. I already have a hyper-visor loaded on one. Any ideas on how I can make money with these things? Another random thing I want to know is... Will my 4790k @ 4.6 be faster than dual E5-620's at 2.66?

Alright all, so I have been thinking about doing this log for an upgrade I am performing at work. Background I am all self taught, only been into IT for about 4 years now, actually started working in the IT world for about 1 year and a half, luckily the company I have been working at for 5 years(started off as a telemarketer) gave me the opportunity to be an IT assistant for sometime, then my boss and only other person in the IT department got a new job and left with onyl 2 days notice. So I dived in head first with a hefty pay raise, man let me tell you about the mess I ran into. The Old Hardware: 5 Windows servers: 2x Dell Poweredge 2950 2x Dell 850 1x Dell xeon tower(not sure of model) 2x Dell Poweredge 2850 All of these windows servers are running Windows Server 2003 r2 . . . . . . . . ummmm WTF . . . . . . EXTREMELY OUTDATED!!!! I do have one server which is set up as a file share that has win 2008 r2(why i have no idea). on to the rest 11 1x Dell PowerEdge 4x Dell SC1425 2x Dell 1950 4 Built PC's not sure of exact specs all have Xeons haha my worst nightmare now.... the network.... This is a F*$&*#$&# MESS . talk about a heart attack. Ok now they got the defibrillator out..... what ever the 2 it ppl that were in the position before me were smoking out of there pipe must have been some crazy shit. following a cable in here is like threading a 20 gauge wire thru a needle. I am constantly afraid i will accidentally unplug something while trying to see where a cable is going. there are cords unplugged not sure why or where they go.... Now reason I have left it like this is because all of the switches must go. They are a HUGE Bottleneck they are all 10/100 switches. yes thats right no gigabit not even server to server communication. RIDICULOUS. Hardware Upgrade Plans What My original plans were to convert all servers into virtual machines on an Esxi Host with a San or NAS attached making managing the machines like a million times easier. I Have never done this before and only experience with virtual machines was using vmware player to test/make specific development computers/also as a work computer on my home pc.So at first I reached out to a few IT companies to maybe assist with the upgrade as hardware matching can be extremely difficult with Esxi hosts, but after getting a few quotes over $150,000 and knowing that the company wouldnt fork over nearly that much money, I decided for myself(great learning experience) and the company that I had to just take care of this. One of the main problems with Outsourcing it was the companies would only use the vary newest models of whatever brand Dell/hp/cisco, one went as far to try and sell me a technology that cisco just released a couple weeks before and then couldnt even get pricing for it. So I went to VMwares compatibility guide and started looking around at some host. I have like the dell machines they are fairly easy to work on , fairly easy to find parts, Looking for something with similiar features that the ESxi host that other companies had recommended, I found a Dell R710 Hex-core with 48 gb of ram installed for $400 thru pcserverparts on ebay, they had a 5 star rating and offer a 30 day guarantee. Next was the Nas I had determined I needed about 8 TB of usable storage, but also needed redundancy, also performance would be nice although not super needed. I opted for RAID 10 in sets of 4x 1 tb drives giving me just under 2Tb(1.8 to be exact) of usable storage. Next was the case On one of linus' video he had a norco 4224 which looked like what i needed and it was fairly priced on newegg but I opted for just the 20-bay version Norco-RPC-4220 At this point I was unsure what OS for the NAS i wanted to use, unfortunately vmware Vsan software would not have worked because that uses the drives in the Esxi host as a san, I wante a seperate unit. FreeNas , i was just unsure about using it in a enterprise enviroment, although like I said demand on the drives is fairly small. I looked at buying a isx systems machine with TrueNAS , basically a enterprise version of Freenas+support, but I wanted to make this machine and support..pshhhh i got this. also there was Open-e's DSS v.7, I tested this out withand it seemed vary similiar to freenas but was super basic. I opted for FreeNAS, had some experience I knew it could do everything I needed, and even more than I needed. so this is the hardware for the NAS http://pcpartpicker.com/p/cQqLvK here is the PSU - Newegg HBA (LSI) card - Newegg and some Sff-8087 cables Once I actually got all these pieces Im going to start a new post with the building, will be up shortly

I think first off i need to sow you guyz my rig core I7 6700k g skillz tridentz ddr4 16gb memory (2x8) MSI gaming m5 (z179 A) GPU r9 280x corsair 650W psu this was an upgrade my old rig had 3 things different Cpu : Amd fx 8320 ram: kingston hyperx fury ddr3 (8x2) 16gb ram Now heres my problem I want to run a game (archeage) on 3 seperate instances i have been using Vmware as my primary virtualization software i recently heard about unraid iam baffled and confused i need to understand a lot of things so i will lay down questions (in red) and elaborate on the points that i want to know 1 How do Vms work ? i mean i have been running vmware since the start never tried any other software ever. now vmware is pretty straight forward and simple (as far as i have seen, coz i dont know about any advanced features it has if any ) so when am creating a vm in the hardware customization option i put in 4 cores and 8gb ram if am running 1 game on host and one on Vm when am running 2 VM + 1 Host i allot 2 cores and 4 gb ram (am i doing this right ?) can i allot all 8 cores and all the 16g ram to this vm( i really need to understand how hardware allotment on vmware works or any virtualization software for that matter) on my old AMD setup i tried to open 3 instances of the game i.e 2 instances on 2 vms and 1 instance on host the whole thing is stable at 2 VMs as i start up that third vm the whole pc starts lagging now the new skylake setup is stable even on three instances of game running ( i.e if i turn down the settings to the lowest on all three instances Q1 Tl;DR : plz explain how vms work and how hardware allotment to each vm works. 2 What are other virtualization softwares that i can hop on to for this purpose? 3 What is unraid ? can i setup unraid the same way i use VMware? 4 what upgrades do i need to perform on this rig to get upto 5 vms? i was thinking about going for a dual r9 nano ( will definitely upgrade the Psu to 850 W) current OS win 8.1 p.s i dont know if am coming out as stupid or condescending so sorry in advance if am being rude ( i cant really translate tone into words)

I'm 99% of the way finished with my "Hackintosh" build but ran into a issue with OS X accepting my 970... despite having the appropriate driver installed. So allow me to walk you through my process and hopefully you guys could point out where I went wrong. 1. Install VMware 2. Download OS X 3. Run and Set-Up OS X 4. Link Darwin ISO 5. Install VMware Tools (reduces lag) 6. Shutdown OS X and reopened VMware 7. Adjusted settings RAM - Gave 32GB of my 64GB CPU - Gave 4 of my 6 cores Storage - Gave 250GB of my 1TB SSD Enabled 3D Acceleration Set Vram to 2GB of my 4GB 970 8. Ran System 9. Downloaded and Installed NVIDIA Drivers for OS X 10.11.4 10. Shutdown the "Mac" and Reset VMware 11. Results 32GB RAM 4 Cores 89GB (NOT 250GB) 128MB Vram (NOT 2GB) My end goal is to install FCPX and Garageband, so... Thoughts?

Hi guys, at first please excuse if there are any flaws in my english, I am not a native english speaker (I am from Czech Republic)... And thank You Linus, Luke, Taran, and whole team from Linus Tech Tips for GREAT youtube videos, because these brought me here ;-) Now about my topic: I assembled something like a homeserver, it is kind of basic hardware I managed to get together from my tight budget, here are specs (it was originally bought as HP ML10 v2, but i changed few parts): CPU: Intel Core i3 4170 - 3,7GHz 2c/4t MB: original server HP with Intel C222 chipset RAM: 16GB ECC DDR3 1600MHz SSD: 120GB Kingston HDD: 3TB WD RED I plan adding second of each drive for RAID 1 redundancy, but right now... budget :-) Server is connected via 100/100Mbps link, public IP adress and it has no data limit. My plan is to run: - Plex server (mostly for 1 connected user at a time) - basic webserver - just DJ promo for my flatmate - estimated few visitors a day (he is not a celebrity yet, ehem :-D ) - basic ftp server mostly used for fastdownload of additional files for our upcoming CS:GO dedicated server(s) - 2 dedicated CS:GO servers - any dedicated gameservers that might run on remaining resources (Terraria, etc.) Now I will by really glad and thankful, if you would give me some feedback about my future plans, because even if I think of myself as kind of advanced PC user, I am Linux newbie (or better said - pre-newbie), so any advices and guides will be just great... I plan running two virtual machines, one with less resources for ftp/web/plex and second just for gameservers, so they won't ever be affected by expected CPU usage spikes, which WILL come frome Plex, or by ftp/web usage. Right now I am not sure how I will split server's resources between those two, but I think best option will be to give both a less than I predict they would need and then give it some testing time and add resources as needed and observed. Right now the system has VMware ESXI 6.0 installed, 2 VM's with fresh Lubuntu installed on both. Lets hope that mr. Google will help me enough with software installing in Linux... :-D As I said, any feedback, advices or warnings would be very appreciated... thx in advance for any replies :-)

What is your preferred Server-Hypervisor and why I prefer VMware ESXi because it's footprint is very small (for VMware ESX 5.1 around 400 MByte), it is very good for Linux guest AND Windows guest and works very good in a HA - setup Even I'm a Windows-(server) - guy, I still prefer VMware ESX over MS Hyper-V ...

====Posted in Troubleshooting also==== ====Sorry, still trying to figure out this forum==== Hey, My name is Blake. Currently the company I am working for is wanting to move from XenServer to VMware. I have it set up currently in a lab environment to try to make sure exporting from XenServer and importing to VMware is going to work the way I want it too since we are doing the move on Easter weekend. I was able to connect to VSphere just fine the other day and now I'm getting an error stating it's not able to connect do to a timeout issue. I have rebooted both the server and laptop I am working with and they are on the management VLAN I created. Anyone know any thing to fix this? I could also just fresh install the ESXi install.
