On my host, my CPU turbos around 3.5-36 GHz with a base lock of 1.9 GHz. In the VM, I’m only seeing the CPU run at 1.9 GHz. My Execution cap is already set to 100% so I’m not sure what the issue is. Anyone know how to get the CPU running faster? Any help is greatly appreciated.

When I made my virtual machine, I assigned it 2 of my 4 cores, but when I check task manager, its only showing 1 core, and changing the virtual cores seems to do nothing. The CPU is also running near stock, as opposed to what my host PC is getting. I attached a photo of both task managers for reference. Also, I am using the free VMWare 17 if that matters. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Firstly, sorry if this is the wrong area. I'm looking at converting a users machine to virtual. Before I do this, is there a way to convert and restore back to a physical machine if required? TIA.

I'll keep it short: I am a software dev, I want to test cross-platform applications but I do not have an apple MacBook or similar. I do have a fairly adequate PC with a 256GB Sata based C drive for my main OS (W10), I also recently went out and got a 1TB NVMe (WD BLACK) for storing all my projects. I also have a 1TB 7200RPM HDD for storing data. My question is; Will setting up the vmware on the NVMe in this configuration allow me to run MacOS as smoothly as it is running off of any other MacBook? If not, what can I improve or change?

Apologies for spelling or grammar, I'm on my phone. So earlier today I fired up one of my VMs in VirtualBox. I tried to forward a USB device, which I've done before without issue, and Windows couldn't recognize it. I had the thought that maybe it's because I had upgraded from Debian 11 to 12 as the host and maybe I needed to check for updates and maybe update the extension pack that facilitates things like USB forwarding. The extension pack in the past has always been a separate download on their site, so I headed over to VirtualBox(.)org , and it seems kind of barren. The big old download button takes you to a page with links to the source code and that's about it. The download page used to be filled with links to the extension pack, binary installers for various platforms, repo instructions for various Linux distributions, etc., and literally none of that was there. The only thing that remotely looked like a link to actually download it was for "older builds" like 6.1, but when I clicked that it just took me to a page with a couple lines explaining that the extension pack was licensed a certain way with a link to the license, but no links to actually download anything. The only way I can see that you can download it from their website now is to download the source code and build it yourself. The Debian repo I already have set up appears to be working and contains a copy of 7.0, but if I want up update the extension pack, or even set it up on a different system, I'm just out. Adding a Debian repo requires importing and trusting a signing key for that repository, none of which I can find now. I can only really think of two explanations: 1) VirtualBox is a huge net loss for Oracle and they're cutting it loose. 2) Tons of companies were using the free, personal version of it for business purposes, so they're trying to corral those people into buying a support license from them and are just removing all the free downloads from their website. Update I just tried to visit their site on my phone to double check and make sure I'm not just blind before posting this, and the whole site is down now. I don't mind using Qemu on Linux, it works fine. I just kept VirtualBox around because I only occasionally use VMs for a few very specific tasks for my personal use, and it was easier to get set up with, and when reading from a passed thru optical drive it seemed to perform a little better, at least the last time I tried comparing. I had noticed though that, the last time I tried starting a Windows 10 VM in VirtualBox, if you install the guest additions, which includes a virtual display driver, it breaks the aero/transparencies in the Windows UI so that weird things happen, like the background of the start menu being completely transparent. And it has been that way for a while. Maybe they are just abandoning it altogether.

Hello all. I am trying one final time to get TrueNAS working on this box before I throw in the towel and try unRAID or wait for the stealth NAS software company Linus keeps hinting about. I'm trying to set up a Windows 11 VM for use over Tailscale. VM settings are attached, and I believe I have everything right in BIOS with VT-D and such. Without GPU passthrough the VM functions fine, but when I try to passthrough the dedicated GPU (GTX 1080) it hangs indefinitely at the "please wait" spinning wheel until I refresh the UI page. I have tried isolating the GPU, pinning vcpus, enabling/disabling Hyper-V enlightenments, even completely reinstalling TrueNAS SCALE, makes no difference. I recently got the attached error message after making a new VM and trying to add the GPU before installing the OS, but all other times there's been no error message. Just hangs or crashes. Attached is the log file associated with the VM that got this error. Sometimes it crashes the whole machine. A picture of the CLI on the box is attached when I tried to start a VM that had previously attempted a GPU, but no longer had a GPU enabled in the settings. I've found only one other thread with a similar issue and it had no responses. Anyhow I have absolutely no idea why this is happening so any help would be greatly appreciated. So I've been following along with Spaceinvader One's "How to Install Big Sur and Other macOS Versions with New Macinabox" video. He's telling me to run the user script that installs the VM. When I do this, I get this message in a pop-up: Script location: /tmp/user.scripts/tmpScripts/1_macinabox_helper/script Note that closing this window will abort the execution of this script Starting to Fix XML error: failed to get domain 'macinabox' No network adapters in xml to change. Network adapter is already virtio Added custom qemu:args for macOS topolgy line left as is custom ovmf added error: Failed to define domain from /tmp/macinaboxfixed.xml error: (domain_definition):3: Extra content at the end of the document ^ This is what has been done to the xml Your network type was already correct. Network has not been changed. The custom qemu:args have been added to you xml. VM is set to use custom ovmf files. xml is now fixed. Now goto your vm tab and run the VM Rerun this script if you make any other changes to the macOS VM using the Unraid VM manger What have I done wrong? There's no VM in the tab. Is there a better place to put this post?

As the title says, I'm trying to get an old game (Age of Mythology) to run on Windows 7 since it looks like Microsoft borked support for it in Windows 10 and later. I get it to sucessfully install, but get this error upon launching the game: I'm using VMWare and Windows 7 Home. It looks like it's complaining about my GPU, the link it provides just redirects to the Xbox website (not much help), is there some way I could passthrough my actual graphics card and not the goofy VMware one? I use an RTX-3050 so not sure if that'd even be possible, or solve the problem. Here's the specs of the "virtual GPU" VMware is trying to use: Any advise would be much appreciated!

Budget (including currency): $1200 - 3500$ USD Country: Bulgaria Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: I want to Work(programing) on MacOS and game on a Windows on single PC. I hate having to restart to switch OSs. I need good configuration to do so. Other details: There are atleast two options: Running Windows and MacOS on VM Running MacOS(Hackintosh or Native) and running games on Windows VM (Are we there yet?) I need lets say 3 variants: budget, price/performance, performance. I usually prefer second hand hardware. What is the best software solution/configuration to utilize this idea? Is there a LTT video about this?

Alright, I'll try and make this quick. So, I'm trying to install an evaluation version of Windows Server 2022 which can be acquired here, on a VMWare virtual machine. I'm preparing to take my CompTIA A+ exam but I don't have any experience with Active Directory, so I'm creating a domain controller on a VM to play around with it and familiarize myself with its operation. This ISO file from Microsoft is supposed to give you a few months to evaluate the product. However, when I begin the setup on my VM I get this error: This is very confusing, because the ISO is acquired through Microsoft themselves. What might be causing this particular mystery?

Hello! So I have gone through the entire setup process for a Hyper-V Machine Setup, I have RTSS, Virtual Audio Drivers, Parsec, GPU Drivers, and everything, but I am wondering how I do the "1 pc 2 gamers" thing, because I cannot get it to work... how do I do the thing to do that? can I do it with a low end old gaming pc (integrated graphics)? Or can I do it with the local pc? just with two sets of peripherals plugged in? Or do I have to have another computer? Would love some answers thanks!!

I recently acquired a 2U server blade with dual 10-core Xeons, 64GB RAM, 2.5TB of SSDs, dual redundant 900W PSUs, 4 RJ-45 NIs (not incl. the IMM port) and figured I'd do my dream server build, but I'm struggling a little. My plan is to run Linux Mint as a host OS for VMware Workstation Pro 16 and run VMs for: pfsense OpenVPN Home Assistant Plex Media Server I'm currently having trouble getting Mint to connect to the Internet through pfsense. I can ping the default gateway IP successfully in CLI, WAN and LAN configure in pfsense, pfsense can ping Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 DNS, but I can't access the Webconfigurator for pfsense or open a website in Firefox. I'm fairly certain I have VMware's network settings correct, but I'm a bit rusty on my network admin skills, so I'm not sure if I'm using the best subnet settings, etc. My biggest concern is that I don't have network settings correct for Mint or pfsense. It feels like the bridged virtual network connection just isn't working. I've tried different default gateway IPs, turned DHCP on and off, restarted my modem... I just don't understand what is going wrong. Don't hesitate to ask trivial questions. It may sound like I'm decently well-versed in this field, but my knowledge of this terminology is better than my practical knowledge, even though I do have some coursework and job experience with some of it. Any help would be appreciated, as well as suggestions for a better way to accomplish my goal. I'm not willing to give up on running this all on this machine, but I'll be honest that I have no idea if VMs and Mint were the right move.

Hey all! This is an odd question but I've found myself in a bit of a pickle. I want to run a Windows 10 or 11 VM on my my PC (which is Windows 10 Home). The issue here is Hyper-V is not enabled on Win10 Home. I've found it is possible to enable Hyper-V on Win10 Home edition but it ends up screwing up a few other application (BlueStacks etc). So my thinking is if there is a third party application when I can simply run the VM within Win10 Home, this would be fantastic but I'm a completely newbie when it comes to VM's so I was wondering, can anyone vouch for a decent "idiot-proof" VM software that isnt Hyper-V please? This is for personal use if that's something you'd need to know. Appreciate the help!!!!

I get the difference between of VirtIO/QXL vs GPU passthrough. The latter is used with a Windows 11 VM with my GTX 1060, and the former with Linux distros I'm playing with, but I don't understand how VirGL compares with GPU passthrough or VirtIO/QXL. From what I understoond VirGL is the middle-ground between GPU passthrough and VirtIO/QXL? My system uses the RX 6900XT Phantom Gaming D as its primary GPU. Since macOS & NVIDIA don't support each other, will VirGL allow me to use macOS in a VM with a decent performance?

I'm wondering if would be possible and viable (stable) to create a virtual machine that runs Windows Server 2019 (or 2022) on a Linux server. My goal is to avoid the higher licence cost of the Windows Server Standard Edition versus the Essentials Editon.I need the remote connection feature that is only available in the Standard Edition. My idea would be the user connect to a Linux and them use Windows on a Virtual Machine. Also how much hardware power I would need? Some context and clarification: This server is for my father small accounting firm with 9 employees. I'm asking this because he needs a new server. There isn't a lot of remote working been done in his company right now, but after the pandemic he would like to have this option. So I would prefer to avoid make he pay for a premium for a feature that will see little use. I live in a country where currency conversion rates, import taxes and the poor economic environment makes the price for a multiple windows licence is prohibitive. It seems that Microsoft import all its licences because even if you take currency conversion into account the price should be half of what is compared with the US. He needs Windows because the software used in his company doesn't run on Linux, but is the best on the market (so no switching). And he uses a server because people of different departments are needed to complete the accounting of every client. I'm no pro IT and we are willing to hire a pro, I just want to know what are my options before hire someone. I already talk to a small IT firm, but they seem more interested in getting me a Windows Server and selling me a monthly tech support plan. So any help would be appreciated.

I have TPM, Secure Boot, and UEFI on in my BIOS on bare metal. I followed the guide that oracle box has given to setup their virtual machine, I have done the regedits that I was supposed to, lastly, I'm greeted with this gem. I have the latest version of Oracle Box. I also know my drive is not corrupted as it works and Windows 10 reports it as a working drive. I downloaded a completely fresh ISO that works properly. I checked the hash and made sure it was right. I noticed that the ISO has been giving a warning sign on the VM's storage tab and I have no clue what that is about so I ignored it. I don't know what is happening, I tried a new file like 3 or 4 different times. I'm out of things to try. Please help?

I am planning on having a dual GPU setup on my next build, with my primary being RX 6800XT, and the secondary (used for VMs) would be GTX 1060 6GB. When the PCIe 4.0 slot is on x8 mode, would the 1060 be outputting on x16 (because it's on PCIe 3.0, instead of 4) or x8? Also, how much of an effect would running on PCIe 4.0 x8 on a new GPU, like the 6800XT? So I have 4 VMs that friends use to host game servers and other stuff on but I am trying to find a way to still allow the VMs internet access without allowing them to access devices on the same LAN as the server (i.e. everything else in my house). I assume the best way to do this is with VLANs but I can not figure out how to set that up, right now the router is running pfSense and I'm using an external vSwitch in Hyper-V so the VMs all show up on the same LAN as the server and that works but it has access to everything on that LAN. If I create a VLAN for the LAN interface on pfSense and assign it the same tag as the virtual switch on a VM the VM can't reach the router at all (I can't ping 192.168.4.1 (which should be the router)). pfSense Interface: pfSense VLANs: VM network adapter settings: If anyone has any ideas or a different way of doing this that would be awesome...

Ok so, my father need to use a win xp machine from time to time because of work, but i screwed up because i wanted to give him a more powerful PC (he had a core duo, now have a pentium g3258). Since there is no way that i go down the rabbit hole of trying to make win xp work on a SSD and realitvely modern CPU, for my own mental sanity, i think a VM is my best bet. problem is: i'm a massive linux noob, never used a VM and don't know wich distro is better. i know that probably every distro can run a VM but if gamer os exist then probably, somewere, there is a distro optimized to run VMs... can someone help me out please?

Hello I have some trouble with my vm. It's a Ubuntu 20.04 guest on a windows 10 host. Everything works fine when I start the vm. But after a certain amount of time (sometimes 30 min, sometimes 1 hour, sometimes even sooner) it becomes incredibly slow. The mouse jumps instead of the normal movement, dragging windows is a pain cause it gets later at the position then the mouse. Opening files is slow as a snail, etc. My host device has 32 GB RAM and 8 cores 16 thread CPU. I located 6 cores to the vm in VMWare and 16GB of Ram. All the VMWare tools are installed. While the guest is being slow, there is no swap memory used and the 16GB is not fully used, the CPU is also at very low usage. Does anyone know how to solve this or why this is happening? About half a year ago it still worked perfectly fine and i didn't change a thing. I'll already thank you for reading my problem.

Hello mates, I'm looking for a cheap server platform, to accomplish the following purposes: - a server where I can virtualize 2 or 3 Vm at same time: - NAS server (with Plex Media Server - 4k res) - Crypto wallet VM (will be online rarely) - Seedbox VM - Run sometimes a game server on the host machine - The host can be Windows Server or Linux (game server will demands at least 4 cores 2Ghz, and 4GB of free RAM) I'm looking for a CPU that can do this all above, without emptying my wallet (power consumption and hardware value). So I've found the E5 2678 v3 (Used). It is the best option for these purposes? What you guys recommend? Thanks in advance. I will appreciate any help!

Budget (including currency): 1000 USD Country: USA Programs or workloads that it will be used for: Running latest MacOS install through Qemu. Hoping to use Xcode as well. Other details: I’m unsure if this is actually a better option performance-wise to a 1000 USD M1 MacBook. However, if they are at least somewhat comparable, I would greatly prefer a desktop PC. Potential time commitment required to optimize the VM to get good performance is not an issue. Also, is a decent GPU necessary for this kind of application?
