Hi all- I am looking to get a new 4U server case for a NAS I am planning to build. I want the case to last a long time and go through many internal component changes without issues. I do not really need the hot-swap bays, but they are nice. I need something that is sort of affordable. The Sliger case is really pushing my budget for this once you factor in rails and Noctua fans. The three cases I am between are the Sliger CX4712, Rosewill RSV-L4412U, or RSV-L4500U. Does anyone have any input on this? I am open to buying used, but there are not very many used options on eBay at the moment that make sense for what you are paying.

Hi ! So. I just picked up no less than 40 Dell and HP servers from different companies in Copenhagen. Now what? It is a mix of M620, R710, R720 and some R730s. Along with a rack, a 10G 24 port Cisco swtich, a new UPS, and a upcoming 4G WAN connection. I'm running a PR agency along with a influencer agency with focus on content creation and YouTube. We operate from the following locations: - Inner City, Copenhagen, Denmark (4GBe WAN via fiber) - Hvidovre, Copenhagen, Denmark (2GBe WAN via fiber) - Aalborg, Denmark (1GBe WAN via coax) - Aarhus, Denmark (1GBe WAN via coax) From Q1 2024, either CA, USA, FL, USA, or NY, USA, via a 4GBe fiber. (we are opening our first LLC) We use my old gaming PC as a server, running unRaid with 4 x 14TB and a 1TB NVME as cache. With 12 core Ryzen 3900X and 64G of RAM. We max that poor thing out. We have this weekly workload now and in the coming months: - 5 x live production in 1080p50 - 1 x event produciton in 2160p50 - 3 x YouTube production in 2160p50 - 10 x SVF production in 2160p50 - 5 x instagram / tiktok production in 1080p50 - 5 x "out of house" production in 1080p50 - 1 x big monthly production in 2160p50 - 5 x remote live production (via site-VPN) With this equipment: - Sony ZV-E10 - Sony FX30 - Sony FX3 - Sony FX6 - Sony FS7 In theese formats: - 2160p50 in XAVC-H and HS 4K in 422 in 200 MBit/s - 1080p50 in XAVC-L HD in 400 in 100 MBit/s - 1080p50 streaming Our workflow: - DIT to SSD SAN - Transcode - Setup in software - Rough cut - Edit - VFX - Mastering - Color grading - Rendering - Render upload to dropbox - Project files to HDD SAN Our SW needs: - 10 x VM for remote editing (LogMeIn software for smooth) - 4 x VM for DIT - 2 x VM for transcode - 1 x VM for Dropbox upload and management - 1 x VM for each YT creator with produciton agreement - 1 x VM for render - 1 x VM for management - 1 x VM for backup - 1 x VM for admin Our HW needs: - DIT server - RDP edit server - Premiere Pro render server - After Effects render server - Unreal render server - Cinema4D render server - Blender render server - Transcode server - VMIX server - SSD SAN - HDD SAN Our equipment (what we know of so far) - 1 x R720xd (Ivy) - 1 x R730xd (Broadwell) - 4 x R720 (Ivy) - 4 x R720 (Sandy) - 5 x R710 (Westmere) - 6 x R710 (Nehalem) - 1 x Dell VRTX - 4 x Dell M620 (Ivy) - 1 x Dell M1000e - 8 x Dell M620 (Sandy) - 1 x Dell PS4210 (25 x 10K SAS 1,2TB HDD) - 4 x HP DL380 Gen8 - 1 x HP DL360 Gen9 - 2 x HP DL380 Gen8 - 1 x Cisco 10GBe switch 48 ports with POE - 1 x Dream Machine Pro (rack) with 10GBe - 2 x Mac Studio M1 Max - 4 x MacBook Air 15" 16GB M2 - 2 x MacBook Pro 16,2 32GB M1 Max - 30+ SFP 10GBe (copper) cables - 10+ SFP dual link fibers (40GBe) - 1 Nestor GPU case 128GBit/s with 4 x PCIe x16 3.0 - 1 x HP UPS - 1 x 4GBe WAN Our setup: - 4 x editors on location - 4 x editors over site-VPN - 1 x live stream on location - 1 x live stream over site-VPN - 2 x studio for video - 2 x studio for audio - 4 x remote editors Everything will run 10GBe. We have CAT 5e in the on location building, they do 10GBe up to 30 meters. We will connect editors with CAT7 to a 2,5GBe switch, with 2,5GBe for each. Planning on getting that to 10GBe though. So! What now and how? We want everything to be well connected, and are tired of slow transfers and workflow. I do not even now if UnRaid is the way to go anymore? Or if a NAS is better than a SAN? And everything will need to be solid state, and yes, we can buy from both Canada and the US. As long as it ships to Copenhagen in Denmark. Give me all your thoughts and tell me what I have forgot to mention in my description above! All best, Thomas

Building a Reliable Backup And Storage Machine
MosesVRR posted a topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Hello, I recently had a portable hard drive fail which resulted in losing access to all my data. I had used the drive to store images, videos, games and other stuff I felt important to store which is now unfortunately all gone. Before this, I never knew it was a rule of thumb to have backups for a backup as I believed that it would never die in such a way and I know now that thinking so was a costly mistake. This made me start looking into various home server and backup solutions especially ones that I build myself from used and refurbished desktops as I would like to keep costs to a minimum and for the learning experience before I move on to more expensive solutions. I want to build a storage that I would mainly use simply for backing up or storing files and data that exists separately from my PC which I do not need to access remotely. Right now, I have 2TB of data that exists only on a portable hard drive and I want something reliable where I can move all that data into. I would like to future proof the system with at least 8TB of pure storage (meaning I would have 8TB of data to backup or store in the near future) and I never want it to fail (meaning I don't want to lose all my data because of a mechanical or software failure). I therefore, request advice or guidance on understanding how I can do so using an old or used desktop (or parts) that I would source from local used stores and online retailers. I want help with understanding the hardware and software (if applicable) requirements for building such a device. How many drives should I get? How big should each drive be? I read about something called a NAS, is this something I should consider if I only (I think) need extended storage? Is it possible to connect to the machine from my pc and not buy a separate monitor? If so, how do I access it (I was unable to find proper information on using a pc to connect to another pc)? Is it just by using a LAN cable? I am a complete beginner to storage and backup in general and I am open to elaborating anything you may feel I may have not explained or considered. Thank you for reading and I appreciate any advice you may have for me. -
Hi! I come across some issues with Windows build in copying mechanism. We are moving from old server with Windows Server 2012 to a brand new one working with Windows Server 2022. This server also control the disk array. After copying smaller amount of data (150 000 files) with windows tools i find out, that some files is missing. After investigation, above 7 000 files is missing. After that i used robocopy, but i still don't fully belive in microsoft tools. After each reboot, it shows me different number of files, even though no new data is saved there Do you recommend any program for this? These 6,000,000 files are survey documents and must be preserved. Thanks and have a nice day

I have a desktop using a Intel Core i5-3470, with 8GB DDR3 RAM, a 128GB SSD I want to use as a boot drive, and 2 500GB HDD that I want to store my Plex Library and Minecraft server on, I have tried this and googled all over the place and nothing gets me a coherent tutorial on how to do this, I can't seem to get Plex to recognize any folders on the HDDs when Linux Mint Vera is installed on the SSD, currently the computer is running windows 10 just as a proof of concept, but I am running into issues and want Linux Mint instead of Windows. Can anyone link me to a tutorial for beginners or directly help me out, I am willing to hop into a call to figure this out.

Port Forwarding Minecraft Server, Through Deco Mesh System
t0rch27 posted a topic in Troubleshooting
I used to port forward and host my own Minecraft servers, just under a year ago. With no problem I could logon to my Telstra Gateway and forward the 25565 Ports. Now, I am actually stumped. A couple months ago, I started using the Deco X20 mesh system. I spent hours trying to figure out how to port forward. Currently, the PC running the server (My PC) is connected to the Mesh System. I have forwarded the Minecraft ports and my computers IP address, through the mesh. Then, I forwarded my Mesh's local IP address with the Minecraft ports, on the router's gateway. If anyone knows how to do this properly, and what IP address I would be giving out for people to join! Thank you! -
So I live in Indonesia, things maybe different here, I don't know. But all I need to do is open a port so I can access my server remotely. Because the ISP provide a modem/router you must request port forwarding from them. But then they tell you its only for private IP, so I cannot open ports to the actual internet. In order to do so i need to upgrade to a dedicated plan, which is usually for big businesses. And as you imagine it's expensive. And yet I have cctv access.. So somethings not right here Is this common? Or is there a way around this? Another option I'd like to utilise is VPNing into my server but that seems to fail also. Maybe for the same reason.. Looking for any advice to access my server remotely. I'll upgrade if I have to. But it just seems unnecessary.

Hello everyone, I was able to get a couple of old servers that were being thrown out at my work. One is a PowerEdge R210 And I am not sure of the other one but its manufacturer is Dedicated Computing, LLC. The issue I'm having with these is they are pretty old (but work) and they were not wiped before being thrown out. I am not able to download anything or even update the system. One of which is currently running windows 7. Is there a way for me to basically completely wipe these servers so I can have full access to them? The original administrator is still on these servers and obviously I do not have the password to get in. Do I need to install a new OS? or is there something else I need to do? Please keep in mind that I am not very tech savvy with this kind of stuff so instructions on what to do would be very helpful for me. If more information is needed please let me know and I will do my best to provide it. Thank you

We have an old unused PC lying around in our office. So we thought of repurposing it as a server. I want to be able to read and write files and it also has to be accessible from outside the network that it's connected to. Which route is the best for this use-case?

Budget (including currency): 200 max. Less than 100 preferred. Country: US Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Excel, like lots and lots of stupid crazy spreadsheets. Also need to store and manage nigh-countless pictures and videos of cute cats and nature. This isn't a joke!!!! Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2680v4, the rest can be whatever is cheapest and still works for the above stated use cases.

Hello, im new to Unraid (recently coming from Truenas) I understsnd most functions of a server and can easily follow guides. But I having multiple failures with dockers such as Nexcloud/Mairadb, Tailscale, DelugeVPN. In all cases the docker web GUI does not respond even on local network) My main objective is to achieve remote access to the server GUI and Nextcloud (or any cloud) I followed the following guides and everything worked perfectly except it won't open in browser: Priority #1 Tailgate: Guide Alternative to Tailscale: DelugeVPN: Guide (this is not necessary if I can get Tailgate to work) Would very much so appriciate some guidence. Tailscale version: 1.42.0 Linux Unraid - 6.12.0 Ping fail from PC (on same network to Tailscale IP) Can Ping from server to Tailsclale IP

ok so i have a 2u server in my basement. use it for backups since theres like a million drives in it connected in different arrangements - thats another story. over the years torrents have collected, thats how things go. purchase a game, it isnt on steam/psn anymore, well? plus i find it unfair that i have to repurchase a game because its a pc port. take the last of us for example. Through PSN ive purchased it for my ps3/ps4/ps5, should it be purchased again??? anywho not condoning piracy, just saying. I get DCMA letters about Metal Gear when ive purchased every game at least 3x over, but im in trouble? Even the original metal gear for ps1, geez i purchased the physical CDs so many times over... Lost in oblivion except for the library of the internet! how can i share my junk without having them in utorrent/transmission? The files exist just not the magnets and so on, utorrent is always fired up. There must be a simple way to seed something that matches the checksum, how to do it? thanks peeps!

Hello all, I'm sort of the tech for a small ~8 person consulting company. We take heaps of photos and we're out of SharePoint storage to store them all. Currently we have ~1.7TB of documents, this number will continue to expand and Microsoft charges about $200/TB/M....which is insane. We obviously have to pay that until I get our libraries cleaned out to below 1.13TB total. Anyway, knowing that most of our data is photos, excel documents, and pdfs..... and that we don't really need to refer to older than current year stuff very often.... I think it would be best if I built some cold storage and moved all those old photos and documents off SharePoint/OneDrive. I could probably swing a budget of $1000, but we'd obviously want to be go as low as possible. What kind of system should I be looking at here? A NAS? Something self built? I have a feeling a NAS will do this job well, the question seems to be what brand and if the software allows for remote access by a predetermined set of users (and what networking equipment, if any, might I need to enable that securely?)

Hello, i am planning on building a really cheap server system to allocate videogames servers and be able to play with friends around Europe. This is what i have built but i am not sure if it is enough or is it just fine, the idea is to host games as Minecraft, Valheim, may be Ark and a few other titles https://es.pcpartpicker.com/user/AnthonyRufus/saved/kcq9K8 Thanks!

Hello everyone, I am currently trying to build a home lab for hosting games (like Minecraft), VPNs, a NAS, and potentially coding projects in the future. Essentially I'm trying to build a multipurpose, all-in-one, home lab server. I'm new to this and was hoping to get some insight into parts I could buy, specifically the specs, whether I should get a redundant PSU or a UPS power backup, what software/OS to use, and/or anything else that you might think is helpful. I currently have a spare Ryzen 5 2600 with the stock cooler and potentially some ram (I'm thinking about upgrading my system's ram as I currently run a 4x4 with 2 at 3200mhz and 2 at 3000mhz) Anything helps and thanks a lot!

I'm looking for recommendations for what is best to set up to access my data remotely from Truenas core From my research so far I see others using options such as: ZeroTeir NextCloud Wireguard Tailscale What is best to set up, affordable pricing, ease of set up, a good mobile app etc I also see that something like Tailscale might be better with Truenas Scale using Truecharts

Im trying to expand my mobo storage with a LSI HBA card, it was sold to me as: Sun SGX-SAS6-INT-Z 8 Port 6Gbps SAS 2 HBA 375-3640 In windows I get this: LSI 9207-8i From reading on Truenas forum I may need to flash this card so it runs as an HBA and not a RAID card. Mobo: Gigabyte GA-B250M-Gaming 3 Where do I start?

Budget (including currency): Not sure, that's Part of what I want to figure out Country: Austria Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Homelab Proxmox Virtualization Host for DevOps Engineer to be to learn and try stuff Other details: Through some Luck and Family Connections, I'm going to get to live in a House with a dedicated Server room. I also get to decide some Stuff for the Electro Install and so on. My Plan is to have this Server room Host a Home lab, Gaming Rig, Stuff for the House and my 3D Printer... Firstly, I'm curious about general Thoughts from you Guys. Any Tips or Stuff to think about from your Experience? Secondly, What do I need to calculate with for the Homelab Stuff to get an Environment where I can learn and play around with anything that comes up on my Way to something like a DevOps Engineer/ Parttime Developer/SysAdmin Thirdly, I was inspired by Linus Hosting his PC in his Utilitysroom so I wanna try to have my Gaming Rig in the Server Room and "just" run an Optical Thunderboltcable, is that a good Idea? Is there anything I need to consider?

How To: Choosing Your Storage Devices Everybody needs storage, some of us need more of it than others (I'm looking at you 10TB+ storage topic). The primary media for data storage these days is the hard disk drive (HDD) and, in recent years, the solid state drive (SSD). From the most basic of users to enterprise-level systems, these two devices are used to fulfill our storage needs in varying configurations to meet a given workload. My hope is that this will serve as a tutorial to guide storage newcomers in choosing their own storage configurations. While this post will advise the type of drive to use, there will be additional posts linked here to shorter tutorials on: Choosing Specific Drives Plugging In Drives: Motherboard Ports, SATA Revisions and External Drives RAID - Pros/Cons Network Attached Storage and Home Servers First, we must ask ourselves: Exactly what ARE hard drives and solid state drives?' Now that you know what storage does, you might also be interested in a better or even “the best” (gasp) storage solution. You start asking some questions. What type of drive is best for me? Okay, now you ask another question: What size is best for me? Cool, so now you know if you need a little, average, or a lot of storage space. Now on to your next question: How much does storage cost? Why pay more for a hard drive or SSD, you might ask? Now you might be worried that, at some point, your storage device is going to fail. All storage devices will fail at some point, but the question is when? Let's talk about performance. Why is there such a range for random access on SSDs? Okay, now it's time to ask: What will you be doing with your system? In the end, the choice is up to you, the user. I hope this guide has been successful in helping you choose the type of storage that will give you the most value for your money, and I wish you luck as you explore the vast possibilities of the wonderful world of storage. I'd also like to give credit to Whaler_99 for reviewing and providing some critique on this guide, and to looney for directing me to Whaler. Finally, I'd like to thank Linus for his videos, from which I learned much of my initial knowledge about storage, which was built upon by my years in the IT industry.

Budget (including currency): under a grand, USD - preferably under 200 Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Basically nothing, it will be used in conjunction with a KVM switch so I can access the BIOS from my office (server is in basement, office second floor) Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): preferably one HDMI output, maybe 3 total if the price is right. MUST be a single slot card, no exceptions as it’s going into a literal 2U rack server. The motherboard has a daughter board/riser with 1 pci 1x and 2 16x slots. One 16x has 16x (bitrifucated) 4x pci NVMe card, also a single slot basically just looking for a cheap GPU that won’t be used for any intensive purposes other than the desktop. No games, no mining, no editing or anything. the server has onboard VGA but I snapped off a capacitor on accident so the onboard is broken unless I take apart the entire server down to the motherboard and re-solder the capacitor with that being said, last thing I wanna do is take out 24 DIMMS, 8x sata drives, disconnect 8x SAS drives etc etc. I think for my purposes I’d be fine with 4gb of onboard RAM or less. 512mb would probably be sufficient too but it MUST be a single slot card, perhaps a rx 580 or something? price isn’t a concern but again for my purpose, cheap cheap is a benefit. I have 2 laptops that have windows 2022 datacenter on them which will be wired via Ethernet directly to the server which is why (ideally) I’d like 3 HDMI outputs, the other 2 can just be for RDP’ing to the laptops via a seperate subnet/switch setup with a hdmi/ethernet balun thanks peeps! There is no wrong answer on this one, anything would help!

The Problem: I can't get my third m.2 SSD to show connected to my server. I've tried it in slots PCI-E5 and E3 and when my other expansion cards are connected it won't show up. I have my motherboard PCI-E mode set to x4x4x4x4 and the drive doesn't show up in unraid as connected. My server is running unraid. I have 2 SATA expansion cards, 4 HDDs each. 3 HDDs go directly to the motherboard. My SATA expansion card would not show connected using PCI-E5 but it would in E3. the M.2 adapter the drive would not show whether in E5 or E3. Ryzen 2700x CPU 16GB 2x8GB DDR4 3200 GTX 1060 6GB GPU x11 6TB HDDS x3 2TB M.2 SSD MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon Motherboard. Here is my motherboard layout: I've got the two M.2 slots filled on the motherboard. I've got the third one in one of these PCI-E adapter cards: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JJTVGZM?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details This listing states "no drivers required". Do you think my problem is this adapter card, or is it that I'm maxing out my PCI-E lanes so its not showing the drive?

Hi everyone, So here is the thing. Right now I am at home using my PC. I am connected to the internet provided by my ISP which is named as City Cables. I have a friend who lives in my city but in a different area. He is at his home and has a laptop. He is connected to the internet using some other internet. We both are on different networks basically. I want to connect to his laptop from my PC via REMOTE DESKTOP CONNECTION to do some work. If we were using the same internet service, it wouldn't be a problem but we are on different networks. So what can we do to achieve this? We have already enabled the Remote desktop connection settings and we have connected to each other machines before as well when he visited my place, but unable to connect from different networks. I know there are other solutions present as well besides using the Remote desktop, but IS there any way to set up remote desktop in our scenario? Regards.

Hey guys Im setting up my first server, I will be installing: Dual 10G SFP+ PCI-E 3.0 2.0 1.1 compliant slot (x8) 8 Port 6Gbps SAS HBA (x8) {8x HDD} NVME expansion PCIE 3.0 (x4) {4x NVME SSD} Utilising all mobo sata ports for HDD (this cannot share lanes with the above) I decided I don't need ECC ram, that really complicates things. Much more mobo choices with regular ram. Can anyone suggest an appropriate mobo for any board from LGA-1150 / LGA-1151O socket or AM4 ( I have these cpus ready). Im also open to other CPUs too tho as long as they are capable of 3x8pcie minimum Old mobos are fine too, doesn't need to be brand new. Iv tried PC Part Picker to filter the results, it doesn't work well since your choices are only 16x and 8x, whereas some 16x operate as 4x etc EDIT: Iv just found a second hand ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VI EXTREME with 4x 16 slots

So I have an old case, a motherboard (Asus Prime b550m-a ac), and a Ryzen 5600. I have recently gotten around to upgrading each of these parts over the course of a number of months, so they have just been sitting around. I am looking to get into the home server world and run something like proxmox to mess around with virtual machines and the like. I know the CPU I have doesn't have integrated graphics, and if I were to plan on using it in another desktop PC build, I would need some sort of discrete GPU to get video output. I am going to run this server headless and in my closet and then remote in when I want to mess around with it. Does anyone know if it is possible to set up the server from the first boot without having a GPU in the machine? I know I could take out the GPU from my main machine and put it in the server to get it up and running, but that is a little time-consuming and a pain in the butt.
