Any sites that does not use google search? Their results are getting crappier by the second, so is there one that don't use it? Most of them still grab the same search result. For example. I search "thumbtack", a thing use to pin stuffs. Instead of getting the actual thing, all I got was a bunch of social media garbage.

So I've had an issue all week with my work machine. It's a Dell XPS 13 9360 running Windows 10 Pro on a 256GB SSD. It seems that if I try to search anything with in windows, I get 2 or 3 characters in, the search results freeze and the window closes. This works with both the start menu and if I open the settings window and try to search there the window will freeze, then close. I'm not sure what's causing this, as it's my work machine I don't ever go into an unsavory or sketchy websites, I don't have any weird programs as I really only run Chrome, Niagara and EasyIO's CPT tool. Only started about a week ago, maybe right after the latest creators update? Thanks for any help you can give me.

When I search in my taskbar for programs to open("Say for example VMWare workstationc44b14bf7ef770281cf2bf8b6dd1565b.mp4"). It wont show the program that I'm looking for, only files with similar names. To hopefully speeds things up a bit, I've tried this solution that I find: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_cortana/cortana-not-finding-desktop-apps-when-searching/f612e995-6664-4b91-b6ae-96790e763858. The device in question is a Dell XPS 13 9360. I made a video an attached it.

Hi everyone, Not been here long but am I the only one thinking that it would be really handy to have a search option on Floatplane? No option to comment on Floatplane when starting a new tropic so I thought I'd put it forward here. Not complaining... Just a thought. What say you?

I have a search engine that has installed itself in Chrome called chromesearch.today that is impossible to remove. I have tried getting rid of every single Chrome-related file, as well as the registry key for it using Malware Bytes, yet it is still there. I have checked the Chrome shortcut target, which is default, so no issue there. Have googled possible solutions and nothing so far has worked. I have little experience removing these sorts of things, and would really appreciate some help. Thanks

I know it's stupid anyway I'd like it to be useful stuff I'd actually want but it can be really dumb if you want too cuz this whole idea is dumb XD. Anyway, happy searching

http://www.wpthemedetector.com/ http://whatwpthemeisthat.com/ They accomplish this type of thing where by typing in the domain, you can find out what themes or plugins other sites are using. Could anybody possibly elaborate on how this can be accomplished?

Hello I need help! This randomly happened and i did not change anything. btw this is windows 7 i am using When I was looking through files and wanted to see it by date i would press "Arrange By Date". It shows nothing its shows as the folder is empty. Now when I choose arrange by folder it shows all the files and all the files are in there. This applies to documents music pictures and videos. And if i were to say get a new file or modify it and put it in the folder and arrange it by date the file only those files does show up. Also the searches doesnt show the full list of files i have anymore unless i click the actual file and open it up then it would show on the search list. yes i know if i choose sort by date it would work but i prefer not that method. I have tried the following: http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/arrange-by-not-working-windows-7-libraries but this does not help is there a way to fix this without doing a clean install? please help and thanks! yes i did a virus scan and nothing detected

So, it would appear that Googles project Dragonfly, (a project to create a censored search engine for use in China) might not be dead, at least according to a group of Google employees who took it upon themselves Warning: Wall of Text ahead. So for those who might have trouble understanding, or simply not know, the Chinese government very much dislikes when people start talking about things like Human Rights, Tiananmen Square, Democracy, etc. In fact talking about these things can land you in prison within China. So the Chinese government decided to simplify the process and get Google to make them a search engine that would simply cover this all up. No doubt that they would block all other search engines (which they probably already are) in favor of this one, via the Great Firewall of China. Eventually, and rather to my surprise, a large number of Google employees decided to protest this, as it is rather morally and ethically questionable, as a result, Google shut the project down, or so everyone was told. But Google executives, including CEO Sundar Pichai, refused both publicly and privately to completely rule out launching the censored search engine in the future. This led a group of concerned employees — who were themselves not directly involved with Dragonfly — to closely monitor the company’s internal systems for information about the project and circulate their findings on an internal messaging list. The employees have been keeping tabs on repositories of code that are stored on Google’s computers, which they say is linked to Dragonfly. The code was created for two smartphone search apps — named Maotai and Longfei — that Google planned to roll out in China for users of Android and iOS mobile devices. The employees identified about 500 changes to the code in December, and more than 400 changes to the code between January and February of this year, which they believe indicates continued development of aspects of Dragonfly. (Since August 2017, the number of code changes has varied between about 150 to 500 each month, one source said.) The employees say there are still some 100 workers allocated to the “cost center” associated with Dragonfly, meaning that the company is maintaining a budget for potential ongoing work on the plan. Source: https://theintercept.com/2019/03/04/google-ongoing-project-dragonfly/ Whew. Sorry for the wall of text. There is a LOT more to this. Please read the original article as I cut out a couple of paragraphs to try and make it fit as best I could. I would weigh in heavily on this topic, but as it approaches that intersection between politics and technology, I will only say that I think Google should absolutely drop the project and destroy any relevant research or code, and that government enforced censorship is, in my opinion, extremely bad.

Hi there, guys! :D It's been a while since I've been looking for an upgrade. I haven't really paid close attention to the changes in tech industry for the past year and a lot has changed, I'm having trouble keeping up. That's why, since my Samsung laptop broke, I wanted to ask you for some advice. I need to pick a new laptop, but: it's mainly going to be used for web development by me and light use by my mother I'm not interested in gaming anymore, so I'd go as far as to say it can be bad at it - CPU is more important to me I'm not sure what to do with storage since I'd love to try that M.2 goodness hands on and I want the laptop to run as fast as it's physically possible, but I do have a 240GB SataIII SSD from the previous laptop with all the data. If the laptop that you find has less than 240GB of ordinary SSD storage, then I'd simply replace them. Otherwise, I think I'd copy all the necessary data I don't think I need more than 8GB of RAM, but if the laptop had a free DDR3L slot or two then I could add another 8GB from my previous machine it has to be under $1000, I'm not rich yet and I don't need a lot horsepower what I need though is a sharp display, touch-enabled if possible I'm looking more fondly at ultrabook segment/class rather than ordinary, thin laptops I'm not against MacOS So TL;DR - I need the best ultrabook for less than a grand. Will you help me out? Thanks in advance! :D

Recently Linus, in one of his videos mentioned windows file search and how slow it is, I've been using this 1 MB app called Everything for several years to search my files on windows, it indexes more that 3 Millions files on my laptop in less than 1 minute, and after that the search is instantaneous, also the index file is very small, So how does Microsoft and Google (oh I remember Google Desktop and its awfully slow indexing), haven't figure this out when a small 1 MB free app can do this perfectly ,

35% Of the time it takes me to a webpage provided by bing, 45% of the time it doesnt show me what I typed and the last percentages it shows a file with the same name before the actual setting. How can something so easy work so bad, have you ever tried searching for updates but instead of updates it says: Lets search online, it only fixes itself after you delete a few letters of the word update.

When searching for files on the F and L drives, it works properly and I am given a result. However, when I search on the C drive, it returns no results, ever. So I checked my indexing settings, made sure the C drive was selected and rebuilt the index. Still, searches turned no results. I did this multiple times. I also tried restarting the Windows Search service and changing policies in the Group Policy editor to no avail. Then I noticed something when deselecting the C drive in the indexing menu: When the C drive is deselected in the upper menu ("Change selected locations") the F drive disappears from the lower menu ("Summary of selected locations") even though the F drive is still selected in the upper menu. Also, when the F drive is deselected in the upper menu but C is selected, F still appears in the lower menu. When both C and F are deselected, F doesn't appear in the lower menu. It seems like drives C and F are connected somehow. I still have yet to find a way to index on my C drive. Example of when C is deselected but then F disappears. Example of when F is deselected but it still appears in the lower menu. And an example of when both drives are deselected, F disappears.

So im using an i5 - 6th gen u processor laptop with just a 1tb HDD inside. NO SSD Before going in the topic i know my system sucks (gonna buy a new one) until then cant buy an ssd because for some reason they're crazy expensive in India. side note: should i wait for zen 3 mobile cpus and nvidia 3000 series mobile chips for laptops? if yes any idea till when? So i recently saw somewhere that disabling the windows search indexing helps increase the performance of the disk here are my doubts. 1. Does it actually help in daily use? 2. Difference in indexing in hdd/ssd? 2. What will be the impact? 3. not a big user of search but what if i remove that and replace it with everything? 4. Is everything better than windows search indexing? can i "pause" it? Thanks for reading. sorry if its repeated didn't find the topic when searched.
