Hello, My modem is connected to coax that is upstairs in my home. My router is also upstairs with the modem and that connection is the only one available for the modem. I was wondering if my connection speeds and strengths would be improved in my downstairs game room if I connected a 2nd spare router to the wifi and placed it downstairs and then hardwired my devices to the second router. Thanks!

Hi all, I am looking for a good home/office router, under $200 USD, to replace the junk one that my ISP provided me. Mainly one to handle internet searches, YouTube videos, Amazon Prime movies, gaming, etc. I will be running 3-4 PCs off of this router, as well as 2 android devices. Thanks in Advance, WeTuLo

I need some help, in short I hope to replace the garbage „ISP Special router“ with an „Wi-Fi 6 Mercusys AX180“, but I have run into to a problem, that the router only has WLAN, while there is an DSL cable going from a white box into the ISP router. Do I need to use an adapter? Do I have to rewire what's in the white box (ADSL box) to support WLAN or am I screwed?

I recently moved into a new house that had 2 floors. After moving in I found out that my ISP's router didn't have a strong enough signal to reach the 2nd floor, so I decided to choose between an Extender, a Powerline and a 2nd router. After giving it some thought I decided that the best solution was to buy a 2nd router (TP-LINK) and put it on bridge-mode, that way I would have a wireless access point and a switch to connect my PC to. But when I did that I started getting random network drops on my wired and wireless connection form my new TP-LINK router (4-10 seconds but long enough to get you disconnected and BANNED from many online games). To fix that I tried the following: 1. Check my ISP's and TP-LINK router for firmware updates (everything was up-to-date) 2. Change the DNS servers to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 for secondary 3. Check ping between the 2 routers (0ms-1ms) as well as ping to game servers (32ms-61ms which is normal) 4. Make sure that I had Cat-5e cables from my ISP's router to the TP-LINK one and from my new router to my pc (200Mbps Upload / 20Mbps Download) 5. Check for CPU/RAM usage on both of my routers (25%-50%) 6. Remove most of my devices on the network 7. Reset both routers in case I accidentally changes a setting I shouldn't have 8. Making sure my ISP's router had a bridge-mode (which was st*pid because it was working) My specs: Router (TP-LINK): Archer C6 Router's Firmware (TP-LINK): Latest Router (ISP's): SpeedPort Plus Router's Firmware (ISP's): Latest Cables: CAT-5e Distance: ~20m Quality of the cables: 1.Good according to the website I bought it from 2. Used my ISP's cable for connecting the router (TP-LINK) to my pc Internet Speed: 200Mbps Download / 20Mbps Upload (tested from https://speedtest.net/) Latency Between The 2 Routers: 0ms-1ms (tested from cmd)

So I spent all day trying to figure out why I was only getting 90mbps until I realized goddamn Spectrum was throttling me. I did my tests directly from the modem. Once solved, I put the router back in line an I'm back down to 90mbps. I switched to an older router and same thing. My router is capable of 1.8gbps. TP-L AX1800. What gives?

Hi peeps! Since I put my HNT miner on top of my block and connected it with a LAN cable my router seems to have been going through a rough time of constantly going on and off and losing signal, which is why I am looking for a new router. Can you guys help me and recommend me one. I'm looking for one thats in the range of €50/$52 with 4 LAN ports that also has a great WiFi speed so my family can use it flawlessly. Thank you in advance!

Hi All, I have a question, I am living at student accommodation and we can only have 5 devices (5 MAC addresses) allowed to connect, the company they use is Exosphere. So I guess I was wondering if you think it would work if I purchased something like a google router to allow me to connect more than the 5 limit to that and that acts as 1 device on the network? TLDR: I want to know if having a router is classed as 1 device on the network or as multiple? THANKS!

Idk if this is the right place for this but worth a shot. So my internet is having problems. It is slower than usual all of a sudden and when 2 people or more are playing, it seems to basically shut down for a few seconds very often. Is this a sign of a bad router or are there other things I should try?

Hi, sorry to bother. Today I updated my internet to fiber and the provider said I would need a new router because my current one was a modem-router combo. As I said in the title my house is 250mt², but I don't have any clue of brands or models to look for. Any help is appreciated, and thanks.

So I own an ASUS RT-AX3000 router, and it's been doing an extremely annoying process of disconnecting at midnight every single night for about 2 minutes. Found out recently that was because of the router trying to search for the latest firmware. So I go to update the firmware and I have tried every single solution and it will not update. I know FOR A FACT I have selected the correct model on the official ASUS website and downloaded the file. Every guide I see online says to upload the .TRX file, only that doesn't exist in the download, only a .W file. If I try to update the firmware by using that file it says update unsuccessful. If I try to update the firmware wirelessly through the ASUS router suite it says successful... but then doesn't actually update it, the firmware version stays the same and it still tells me a new version is available for download. I have tried factory resetting both physically and through the suite, neither has worked. It will straight up tell me the update was successful, and then just not actually do it. Please help, losing my mind.

I have a 500mbps plan and 2 routers. The new ISP provided router is a Huawei 2-in-1 router and modem and the other is an aftermarket TP-link router that i carried over when i bought it to replace my previous ISP's router. The Modem-and-Router is the Huawei HG8145V5 That is the TP-Link Archer AX50 router which i have now i made into an access point. The 2 routers are daisy chained. I have the TP-link in Access Point mode and have it cover the house where the Huawei can't reach. Initially I did notice that sometimes there would be some times where the WIFI just ..lagged? but these were very infrequent and only lasted about a few seconds. This wasn't noticeable on my laptop and wasn't much of an issue on my phone. Recently, however things have gotten really bad. Its come to the point where when it does cut out its fkin unusable. My phone would just stop loading anything that needed an internet connection. Playing Just Cause 3 on my laptop, the game would pause to let me know they can't reach the servers and i have to go into offline mode, this happens several times during a session. Its become really fkin annoying and i want to fix my setup once and for all. This here is an example of what a cutout looks like on my phone. The download/downstream just stops and i get the dreaded, "connected without internet" for a solid few minutes. What can I do to fix this? I have fiddled a bit with the router settings before and now how to change some of them. But I'm not all to familiar with changing DNS settings and stuff like that so I might need some guidance. Your help and advice is much appreciated.

Been trying to find reliable info on new affordable routers that both support WPA3 and 6GHz is proving to be difficult. Anyone here pickup such a router recently? I have a feeling that I will need to wait a bit longer to find one that is affordable. Ideally the Software would be easy to navigate and configure, particularly when connecting the ISP Gateway to it. Looking for something that is somewhat easy to manage other devices on the network, I frequently need to log in to temporarily restrict some users access. Setting up the DNS should be easy too; Cloudflare is pretty decent. I assume the VPN setup would be all or nothing. Are there any routers that allow you select certain devices to use the VPN? or even a unique DNS for certain devices? I know these two question will probably lead you to recommend a standalone system with something like pfSense or untangle. These are nice to have on a home network but not necessary, especially since I don't really want to spend too much time messing with settings in my home environment.

I am trying out a new fiber connection so I have both new and old net connections. Its called Jio Fiber. The new (jio) router that has light converter build in so I can't not use it, but the old one had a seperate converted allowing me to use any router (tp link). Jio router uses 192.168.29.1 as subnet, instead of 192.168.0.1 by tplink. Previously I had my pi's ip reserved in the tp link router to 192.168.0.175 which works fine. Problem is I don't see the pi in the clients list, when I do see it I can't connect to it. I've also noticed, the mac address of same device are different in both routers, so I can't use the same mac. I have use Advance IP Scanner ss below. It's probably the ...29.7 one, as only 3 clients are connected to the router. 29.7 doesn't show up on the router's lan clients page tho. Im confused.

I've changed my network configuration in this way to cover the whole house: Modem 192.168.0.1 --cable--> WAN Router1 192.168.1.1 --cable--> LAN Router2 192.168.1.2 Both routers are configured to use the same SSID and everything works fine, but... 1. Pi-hole is currently on network 192.168.1.0 and is configured as DNS for both routers, while the modem uses the ISP DNS. Would it make sense to connect the Pi-hole directly to the modem? Does it make any difference? 2. The ISP modem supports an ISP provided VPN (that works well), but of course with the current configuration I can access only the modem's network (192.168.0.0) and not the router's LAN (192.168.1.0). How should I configure the modem and Router1 to access the 192.168.1.1 network through the VPN? Thanks!!

With ISPs in the US coming out with UpTo 3Gb fiber in some areas, I feel like it's a good time for a 2.5 Gbe network/switch round up. Just doing my own research I found the routers especially to be confusing. Just a nice video clearing out some of the network marketing BS.

Hello everyone, I want to setup a WiFi network for my home. And I'm completely new to this so I need some advice but I can't find much on the internet. (Most of the stuff is a bit confusing). And I don't want to be asking advice from any ISPs in my area (since they're all like yeah it'll be fine!) So my home is actually 200 sq yards and 2 floors (2 flats actually one on 3rd floor and other on 4th floor). (All concrete and bricks) no wooden walls and stuff. And I have nearly 20 devices in my home (most of them are always active) What kind of router should I be using. Like should I buy some mesh router (if mesh how many mesh routers? 2 or 3 or 4?) or should I get a switch and multiple access points (but I have never done any network setup before so pls recommend some beginner friendly solutions) (some budget options would be really nice)

Hello everyone I have this TP-Link MR200 v4 router with 4G SIM card. It kinda works but when I start to download on steam or open 4K vid (basically full load) it just turns off the signal and I need to manually restart router. I contacted my provider Orange and received new router, same problem. Guy at Orange told me that when signal drops from 4G to 3G then router does not switch correctly between them or when there is just full signal loss, they just do not reconnect at all. I read all the possible articles about how a big piece of crap MR200, 400 or 600 is and how they solved those drops with new modem. D-Link DWR-921 - this one was suggested and it should work good, but I rather prefer ASUS brand and I want something better quality with better UI, smaller etc. (also I found that ASUS cheaper on amazon) anyway my question is: Will this ASUS work correctly and autoswitch between 3G and 4G and will reconnect when power loss? I do not want to buy both and test them so I am asking if anyone had their hands on the ASUS 4G-N12 B1. Thanks.

Does anyone here know how I can get WiFi print to work on my Epson L6190 to work on the crappy and proprietary ( un-upgradable e-waste) that jiofiber calls a router and forces you to use (don’t quote me on that there may be a way to get my own router there without using jios crap I don’t know about yet) edit: mods I just realised I posted this in the wrong subforum, pls move it to the right one

Hi all, I have the pleasure of moving into a new house (rental) mid-May. With that I am planning our network setup. I am looking for advice on setting up the network in our house, specifically on routers and switch. TLDR: I need some help with picking out a switch, and routers. Would 3 routers in the house by too much? (+1 in the office) What kind of switch would you recommend? Preferably one with 10Gb ports. (or go for 2.5Gbit or 1Gbit for now due to price?) My realtor states there are RJ45 ports in the house, but no sign of a Switch... How would I resolve this issue? Keep everything downstairs and push wifi upstairs? (and sacrifice lan upstairs) The house: A two story home, typical American (for this part of the country) with the master Bedroom downstairs, and three bedrooms upstairs. Total Sqft is about 2,700 in the house itself. There is also garage that was converted into an office with two rooms. I have been told that the house is setup with LAN ports, but I have not been able to confirm this yet. Unfortunately we had to do a virtual visit, and it slipped my mind to ask. I do have it in writing though that it is there. Also - the house is from the mid-90s, so unless they put them in later, it will either be terribly slow, or, the realtor was confused with phone lines... My main concern is that I don't know where these ports lead to. If they are setup like the realtor says they are, I'd expect a switch or spot for a switch somewhere. Right? Internet situation: Painfully, I have to get coax again... (Used to fiber optics for the last 3 years) But, we have up to a gigabit line on our coax cable. Modem: Netgear Nighthawk CM2000 - that I already own.. This modem has a 2.5 Gbit maximum, and thank God has a 2.5 gigabit RJ45 output. Note this is only a modem, it does not have a router. Networking: The goal: The office: I want a separate router in the office, just to be sure that the office has proper internet access both wireless and through LAN. The office only needs a 1 Gigabit LAN connection as it is for work through VPN only. So no NAS or anything will be connected to it. The house: The Coax connection is in the back of the house. But, I want a strong WiFi signal throughout the house. Also, our TV and consoles will need an RJ45 connection. (our TV has wifi5, so I prefer the RJ45 connection) Also, preferably, I want a 1 Gigabit LAN connection in the guest bedroom, as we will have an Apple TV upstairs, which requires an RJ45 connection. How to achieve: I am thinking about going for ASUS routers, mostly because I already own one. Current router I own: RT AX88U ASUS has AI mesh which looks interesting, but I don't have any experience with this yet. Our current router covers our one story apartment (About 1,350 sqft) very well. It is in the middle of our apartment. Equipment: Routers I am thinking of putting the RTAX88U we already own in the office. Then, put one ASUS RT-AX89X by the coax modem. This will also be the spot by my PC, and where I want to put a switch. Then, put two more routers, like the ASUS RT-AX92U , throughout the house, one by the TV (front of the house), and one upstairs. Would this be overkill? Switch Here i need the most help, as I have never owned one. However, to "future proof" it, I was thinking about getting a 10Gbit Switch. Also, in the (near) future I want to setup a NAS, which I want to connect with a 10Gbit line to the network. Or should I just go for a 2.5 Gbit or 1Gbit one? Since it seems like an all 10Gbit switch will cost 100s of dollars. Possible issues: One issue I foresee is that the house does not have said RJ45 ports. If this is the case, since I have it in writing, I may force the landlord's hand and ask to install it. (we will have the keys a month before move in) I most likely will pay part of the bill, just to keep the peace, and we will be there for 2 years most likely. However, if these ports won't be installed, another thought is to keep the wifi routers downstairs, and assume they will work upstairs. (literally sticking one or two to the front of the house on ground floor) Then just run cables from the switch across the ceiling to the right places. If you made it this far... Thank you for sticking through this! Robbert

I am looking to as cheaply and reliably setup home network. I am very novice at this stuff but can follow instructions well. We recently upgraded from crap verizon dsl to Verizon wireless lte home. They sent us a cellular modem/router. It keeps stopping every couple hours and we reboot to work a couple more rinse repeat. We called and are sending new unit. Hopefully that will work. There is also an xfinitywifi hotspot nearby that we can use but it is a weak signal. My laptop and kindle tablet can see it but cellphones don't from inside. I am looking for best solution to have an independent home router that is ethernet to verizon modem/router and wirelessly to xfinitywifi hotspot as either bond or failover as well as hopefully also have usb to connect external drive with plex media server to share video and music over home network. If I need more than one device to accomplish this that is fine but biggest issue is cost and second issue being cumbersome. But cumbersome is just inconvenient where cost is a big factor. Ps. I have more than one external drive so if I could use a USB hub to connect and share them all or a better solution would be great.

Hi all, So I have an issue that I hope you can help me with. I have a smartphone that is connected to an wireless access point. When I ping from the Access Point(AP) > smartphone, I experience high and inconsistent ping times compared to when I ping from the Access Point > a non-smartphone device(e.g Linux laptop) which gives low and consistent ping times. I have tested this with different routers, as well as a different brand of router, and different Android smartphone devices but I still am left with the same problem. This has also occurred with other Access Points in a different location. To add, if I ping the smartphone > Access Point, the ping times are normal(low and consistent). I have attached two screenshots: Ping times from AP > Smartphone Ping times from AP > Laptop. I would greatly appreciate any information regarding the high & inconsistent ping times from the AP > smartphone. Does anyone know if this is a hardware, software or Android network priority issue?

My router, tp-link Archer C1200 v3.0, has a usb port that I've connected a 1TB drive to. My problem is it can only do FTP, and windows doesn't match well with FTP, I can add network storage but not mount it as a Network drive. My phone doesn't have any issues with ftp though. I also have a raspberry pi which has a 2TB drive running a SAMBA SMB server which works flawlessly on every device. Im only using the 1tb drive as it was doing nothing getting dust. I want to use that 1TB drive as a media consumption server, but double clicking on videos just starts copying to drive instead of playing it. So instead what I have to do is, go to properties and copy the location (image below), and paste that in VLC or anyother media player, put in the password, then it starts streaming. Couple of extra annoying steps that I have to do evertime. Is there a way to skip this or make this better?
