I was looking to replace the keyboard on a late 2011 model 13” MacBook Pro. I’m fairly confident I can replace it with no problems, but I’m wondering if there are any rgb backlit options. I’ve tried googling but I haven’t found anything, so I thought maybe the forums know.

Bear with me while navigating through the somewhat unnecessary details that follow but I wanted to get as accurate advice as possible on the topic: MacBook Pro for iOS development. I have been wanting to get into apple's development ecosystem for a while now and thoroughly researched my options, I concluded that getting a MacBook Pro 13.3" with 8gigs of ram and 512gigs of ssd. Following are the issues that I'd be very appreciative for clarification on: 1-During my research, watching youtube reviews, I came across cases of thermal throttling in brand new models both MacBook Pro and the new mac mini. The problem turned out to be dried out thermal paste. Now although reapplying the thermal paste DID solve the issue. However, these are quite expensive tools compared to any windows' machine that I have and I don't want prying it open to be the very first thing, because of the fear of messing it up, and also given especially how hard apple tries to limit a customer's control on their device. So do the refurbished models have thermal paste reapplied as well and has anyone come across a case of thermal throttling on a refurbed MacBook Pro. 2- Is a 13-inch screen enough when working with multiple iphone simulations? 3-Is an 8gb ram enough for iOS dev as well as 512gb ssd to last me with for next 5 years? 4-I am currently in sophomore year and am proficient in C++ and OOP related stuff. That being said, about $1700 is quite a bit of investment and I want to recover it asap. Hence, I'd like to know what is a good estimate of the time of how quickly can one gain a working knowledge of swift and iOS dev because working with a VM Ware installed Mac environment is too difficult for my current laptop to support and isn't as smooth of an experience. 6-Please recommend any good sources to learn iOS dev if you are aware of any. 7- Does portability matter enough over raw performance gain to not get a better spec-ed mac mini over a lower spec-ed MacBook pro? 8-What sleeves or hard cases would you recommend? I apologize if I come across as stupid or ignorant in any of my questions, but please bear in mind that I am an amateur right now, but eager to learn.

Sources: Ars Technica, Apple It’s nice that Apple is finally giving the MacBook Pro some good GPU options because at the moment it’s maxed out to a Radeon Pro 560X which is just an “okay” GPU according to reviews. But again, this is an Apple product so don’t expect it to be cheap. I just wish they’ll offer a MacBook Pro with Touch ID but without the Touchbar because the short time I used a friend’s 2016 MBP, the touchbar slows down my workflow like when editing a spreadsheet in Excel. Instead of just hitting F2 to edit a cell, I have to do press the Function key, then touch F2 on the touchbar.

EDIT: So some people aren't sure why the article/author mention the T2. So here's the pdf straight from Apple explaining the other T2 chip features, and their quote on the "HARDWARE microphone disconnect" Apple T2 Chip Overview PDF Source Not a bad idea?

macbook pro died. Building first video editing pc.
aclebre posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
Hello everyone, First time posting and new to the pc world. I've been using an old 2011 macbook pro 17in laptop to editing videos for over 6 years. Sadly, like most 2011 macbook pros, the graphics chip died...again. So with the crazy high prices for new models I've decided to look into the pc building world. After some months watching a whole bunch of videos on youtube, I think I have a starting point for a build, but could really use some feed back to see if I'm missing something. Following the format for this thread heres what I got. 1. Budget & Location Around $1500 US. I'm planning to order the parts one Cyber Monday here in the States to get some killer deals to save some money for a monitor or for better components. 2. Aim Video Editing is the main purpose. I'm going to be start regularly posting videos on youtube so it's going to be a work horse. I use many of the Adobe CC programs like Premiere, Audition, Lightroom, Photoshop, and some others. Maybe some light gaming but it's not a need. 3. Monitors Right now I could use my 4K tv to hold me over for now. I've been looking into the Dell - P2715Q 27.0" has been getting good reviews from other content creators. 4. Peripherals No idea yet. Planning to use some spare ones I got lying around until I find ones I like. I'm open to suggestions 5. Why are you upgrading? Walking away from the Apple tree. I loved my 17in macbook pro but the world, and Apple, has changed quite a bit. Here's what I'm thinking so far. Seems like Apple either isn't enforcing their internal document of "bricking" the MacBook if repaired by 3rd party or the internal document was an error. https://www.macrumors.com/2018/10/06/ifixit-repairs-2018-mbp-without-apple-diagnostics/ The Original Document leaked stated: iFixit:

Developer/researcher trying to squeeze what performance i can out of my macbook pro (cause you can't just buy the os without a hackintosh mess for a reasonable price, and I really screw up switching between oses). Anyway, I'm looking for cooling solutions for a 15" macbook pro, my biggest need being the ability to detach the solution (relatively) easily. I've tried "cooling pads" and use them currently, but they don't seem to produce a significant effect (especially as summer brings the ambient temperature up). I'm not above absurd hacky ideas, as long as a) they are unlikely to cause water damage, and b) they're easily-ish detachable. I would love to hear what you guys come up with... (hope I put this in the right place) cheers, -sam

I just got my sisters old 13 inch 2015 macbook pro. Base model. I then made a windows to go usb with windows 10 2004 x64. The macbook boots to the flashdrive just fine but there are no drivers. i tried to manually install the wifi driver through device manager and it shows success but then it doesnt actually install. I went back to OSX and tried to use boot camp assistant to download the windows support software but after it says saving windows support software then at the top of the window it keeps popping up saying it couldnt save the software and asking for my password to continue. it keeps giving so many errors i have to force quit the program. im wondering how else to get the drivers or even just the network driver as i found a tool to get the rest of the drivers as long as the network driver is installed. TIA.

I have a 20-month old A1989 (661-09759, i7-16GB-256GB, mid-2018 touch bar) that has stopped powering on (running Mojave, it was installing 2020-003 security update the last time it was on). Per Apple store and a third-party tech, it has an unknown logic board issue that requires a replacement board (keep in mind there was no water/shock/drop/heat damage); I’ve also visually inspected the board myself (comp. engineering student) and I don’t see any bad caps/chips/etc (visually, have yet to check more thoroughly). Apple would replace the logic board for 375+100 labor (USD), but my main concern is the data I have on the device (prefer to not use 3rd-party data recovery). Any suggestions on what could be wrong given there wasn’t any physical damages? I know these boards are notorious for failing and suspect a logic/firmware problem, but I’m curious if there are any suggestions/similar experiences here. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I have been looking at getting a MacBook Pro for a while now but put it off due to the announcement of the ARM transition. I was wondering if anyone could give me advice as to whether I should get the first ARM MacBook Pro (13") which is set to launch at the end of this year or if I should hold off until the 14"/16" models are released in Q2/Q3 of next year. I've read online that the 14" and 16" are going to be redesigns however I am unsure how true this is as apple, to my knowledge, hasn't said anything. I will mainly be using the laptop for light university work and internet browsing. However I also wish to use it for programs such as Logic Pro X. I understand that information on the ARM macs is very limited at the moment however any opinions on what I should do would be greatly appreciated as I do not have much experience with macs at all. (I may take a while to reply to this post as it is currently 4:45am here in the UK) Thanks in advance

Dear helpful tech guru(s), Ive been using a late 2011 MacBook pro, the video card has now crapped out 3 times, and I don't know what my next best course of action is as I can't afford much over $500 right now. Back story - The first 1st time I took the computer in to an apple store for repairs back in 2014 & paid for repairs. The 2nd time was a few weeks later as the problem wasn't fully fixed & thankfully wasn't charged anything. The 3rd time was a few weeks ago where I was told that the late 2011 model has been problematic & should be issued a refund for the charge of the initial repair back on 2014. After hours of phone calls with Apple, their reps says it's now too late. Now - After paying a 3rd party technician $310 CAD (I live in Vancouver) to fix the video card issue, the video card is glitching out again, below I've attached a screen shot I took today, I feel like I have no choice but to buy a new laptop once I can afford it. What do you guys recommend for editing laptops? All 3rd party technicians I've talked to all say how the late 2011 model is not worth fixing and yet I can't afford to get a new laptop to edit video on Are you guys ditching apple now? Appreciate any advice, Much obliged, Owen H Thomas

Hey All I have bought an extra second hand macbook pro 2011.. Ya Ya I know Apple, But hey it only cost $90 on the South African second hand market and its what i can afford for study machine, What can i do apart from the below? Custom External GPU Egpu Custom Sealed Case Creating My New Liquid For Cooling Ram Upgrade 8G Ram Hard Drive Upgrade 120 SSD Macbook Pro Case Mode Before I dive deep into it I want to say that I want to keep the entire macbook look but add something almost all macbook pro lack and its cooling and battery life "and YES i know performance plus apple care LoL" So basically what I have designed theoretically thus far is a new cooling liquid for application use that help out allot for the cpu, for the external a fan will be to bulky so I was thinking on a slim pad that used also liquid cooling that can be 3D printed and then just added cooling to it, as benifit it might be even possible to add the external EGPU to it "WHAT" yes according to what I see here it might be possible. This will allow to compete with gaming machine as also having the most awesome apple product in the world and YES i think this might be worth all the effort. If anyone can think of somthing else or new let me know. Kind Regards: Jacques Seyfried MSc,BSc,MM https://www.linkedin.com/in/jacques-harry-seyfried-a05752155/

Apple: https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/ Source: https://www.techradar.com/news/apple-announces-new-range-of-powerful-macbook-pro-models Source 2: https://9to5mac.com/2018/07/12/apple-macbook-pro-with-touch-bar-updated-with-max-32-gb-ram-improved-third-generation-keyboard-true-tone-and-new-intel-chips/ So Apple just updated the MacBook Pros right after the rumor that broke out yesterday. Updated specs include For 15-inch Six-core Intel Core i7 and Core i9 processors up to 2.9GHz with Turbo Boost up to 4.8GHz Up to 32GB of DDR4 memory Powerful Radeon Pro discrete graphics with 4GB of video memory in every configuration Up to 4TB of SSD storage True Tone display technology Apple T2 chip Touch Bar and Touch ID Starting at $2,399 For 13-inch Quad-core Intel Core i5 and i7 processors up to 2.7GHz with Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz and double the eDRAM Intel Iris Plus integrated graphics 655 with 128MB of eDRAM Upto 16GB RAM Up to 2TB of SSD storage True Tone display technology Apple T2 chip Touch Bar and Touch ID Starting at $1,799 Other improvements/notes include 3rd gen butterfly keyboard that makes typing quieter (and hopefully rid of the previously failed design) As Apple points out, new MacBook Pro has been designed to compile code faster, and run multiple virtual machines and test environments better than before There's also new "Hey Siri" support with Apple's custom T2 silicon chip which also delivers enhanced system security and secure boot Improved cooling system Apple has also partnered up with BlackMagic Design to provide an eGPU for $699 with Radeon Pro 580 It's also noted that Apple shifted the 15-inch from LPDDR3 to DDR4 that might have negative consequences to the battery, but Apple has actually increased the battery capacity to 7.7 watt hours to compensate I'm personally pretty stoked on the updated core count and true tone display. All the new models will be available online and in stores later this week

My brother recently bought a second hand 2014 15 inch Macbook Pro with 4980HQ and 750m. Everything runs great except he complains the wrist rest area behind the keyboard gets too warm under light use (browsing web, etc). I'm thinking of adjusting the curve so the fan will run a bit faster during light use. The only software I found sets a constant RPM, it can't adjust the curve. Does anyone know a software to adjust the curve?

I want to charge both my and my friend's laptop, which both have USB-C PD charging ports, off of one adapter. Possible solutions would be a dual USB-C port power adapter, a single American-American AC adapter with an in-line USB-C PD port >15W. Even if we could charge one laptop at normal rates and one at a slower rate, I'm looking for anything like this. Google had a dual USB-C charger, but it's now discontinued? Quick charge is not useful in this case. Hope I'm specific enough... This is proving to be quite the treasure hunt. Thanks and Cheers! Ben

So I'm trying to pick out a new laptop for school and have the fortunate opportunity of not really having a budget, due to my professor's almost surplus of funding. My research area is visualization of artificial intelligence, and I work in subfields of artificial intelligence that benefit from both cpu performance (through search) and gpu performance (machine learning). I can offload a lot of my work to our super computer, but I like to be able to train models and do search on my local machine. So, I'm looking for a high end laptop that can do at least some of this work, but still be thin(ner) and light(er), since I'm going to be carting it around everyday to and from my office. I've looked around and come across a few results, with pros and cons on a few choices. Macbook Pro 2018 Good: Core i9 decent graphics card for what I need (can train on another dedicated machine) I actually like Mac OS best screen in the business they finally have 32 GB RAM a good battery Bad: The thermal throttling on the VRMs (main concern and my only withholding on getting this device) Expensive storage Dell XPS 9570 Good: Core i9 32 GB RAM 1050ti graphics (not entirely sure how it pairs up with the radeon pro 550X) Cheaper storage Bad: Possibly thermal throttling? Not sure on it's state compared to the MBP 2018 Windows Aero 15X Good: 32GB RAM GTX 1070 (!) Cheaper storage Bad: Core i7 (only bad vs the i9's) Style of the laptop Windows As far as OS is concerned, I would prefer Mac OS and don't really like windows, at least on a laptop. I'd probably use linux again and dual boot on either of the windows machines, but it's my second choice to the MBR. These are the three I've looked at the most, so if anyone has any better suggestions that I haven't seen yet, that would be amazing! Also, if you think I should wait for Apple to respond to the thermal throttling issue (haha), tell me! Thanks for any insight you lovely people might have.

Source: 9to5 Mac Download the Intel Power Gadget for PC, Mac and Linux https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/intel-power-gadget-20 I didn't know until now that when the CPU goes to just 800 MHz it's not throttling but going to idle. So the dips in the middle is not throttling but some cores are going to idle. Is this some kind of power saving feature or does the CPU knows when cooling solutions suck so it resorts to some cores going to idle? I'd say the result between the simulated quad core and the six core MBP is rather marginal when it comes to FCP X and 18 seconds is not significant in my opinion. The graph shows that even with four cores, it still throttles although not as pronounced as the six cores. This is obvious that the freezer cooled MacBook Pro yielded with better results than the air cooled six core and quad core MacBook Pro and all CPU cores don't go to idle. Oddly enough, the iMac Pro with Intel Xeon processors performs slower than the MacBook Pro when it comes to Final Cut Pro X because of the fact that Xeon processors doesn't have a dedicated Quick Sync core unlike other Intel's consumer desktop and mobile processors (including the core m3). So all of that talk about Apple's magical optimization of FCP X often touted by Apple's fans users is just Quick Sync. Then the last few words from the author is somewhat misleading and disingenuous in my opinion especially the one in bold. I don't think Apple engineers are oblivious of the consequences of putting something as hungry as a core i9 to their laptop while retaining their skinny design and putting shitty cooling solutions. And yet the 9to5 Mac author tries to shift the blame towards Intel? This is some not-so subtle shilling from Jeff Benjamin and I don't think bringing up the rumored ARM powered MacBook would prove his arguments that Intel is somehow responsible for the throttling issues of the MBP and I don't think Intel's alleged thermal issues (according to Benjamin) is the reason why Apple might transition to their in-house ARM chips for the 2019 MacBooks.

So, I've been wondering ever since this whole controversy, around Apple's new Macbook Pro with an Intel Core i9 processor that can't even hold it's base clock, started; how much cooling would the Macbook Pro actually need to keep this thing cool and even turboing to it's max, and what would that look like? Anyone who actually knows anything about sciencey cooling and stuff?

Hello. I have bought new ssd 970 pro 512GB and I wanted to upgrade my 2015 13" macbook pro retina. I have installed a system on APFS format with GUID. I have checked that my laptop has Pcie x4 and High Sierra os has nvme support. I tried to download Samsung Magician for drivers, but they support only Windows an when I called Samsung they told me to check if a disk works on windows(it is fine on windows). I called Apple and they told me that they can't help me because it is not Apple branded product. I noticed that ssd gets really hot, but it is normal for nvme ssd. I thought it thermotrottles, so I bought thermal grizzly kryonaut and ramp up the fan to max but no effect. My max speeds with an original flash drive are 1100 read/ 750 write after upgrade 1500 read and write. Does anyone know there is any solution to get those advertised speeds on macos or I am stuck with it?

Hello, May I have your advice? So, I am willing to upgrade my old 2008 Budget Laptop to something newer and more powerful. I will use it for Schoolwork, potentially taking it into class, but also video editing and medium gaming, if possible at 60 FPS at Medium settings. Here are the possibilities I have narrowed it down to: Building a PC myself, looking a bit like this: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/2pxFbX and 1.1 Getting a Windows Ultrabook (suggestions welcome, 1000€ Max) 1.2 Getting a MacBook or MacBook Air 2. Buying the new Quad-core 13 inch MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM and adding an eGPU with something like a RX580 (either the BMD eGPU (RX 580 8GB) or the Razer Core V2 or X (1070 if supported, else RX 580 8GB) Please: the Parts for the PC are to 95% fix, so unless there is something dramatic, there is no advice needed. Yes, I know the h80i v2 is overkill, but I love its aesthetics. Thank you very much for your help!
