Hey guys, Today I started a litle "experiment" to check how fan speed impacts the performance of my CPU cooler ("Alpenföhn Brocken" for anyone wondering). So I started one test with my fan running at the lowest RPM possible and monitored the temperatures and one test with my fan running at max speed. You can see that I turned up the fan speed whilst stresstesting which is visible in the drop of temperature on all cores. As you can see the impact of the fan is quite small, but still bigger than I expected it to be. A drop from ~65°C to ~60°C on the hottest core by increasing fan speed is noticable. So around 4-6 degrees C lower temperature with a fan speed that is nearly doubled. Which really isn't that much considering the jet-engine next to me at nearly 1500 RPM. Apparently heat dissipation doesn't seem to scale well with the amount of air moving though the fins, but why is that? I am really curious about the physics behind heat transfer from my aluminium heatsink into the air. Does anybody know how exactly this works and how the amount of air moving through the fins scales with heat transfered? I can't seem to find any good source of information on german and my english skills aree not good enough to search trough english wikipedia entries. I would realy appreciate some nice and simple explenations behind the numbers I've got as results.

So I have a GTX 780 with the acx cooler on it and I want a blower style cooler for my small case (evga hadron air) but it's difficult to buy just the reference coolers without buying a new whole card. I found a Titan X cooler on eBay but I don't know if all the thermal pads and heatsink would line up. Does anyone know? I checked around the internet and haven't found anything. Alternative does anyone know where I could get a blower style heat sink for my GTX 780?

Hello guys, I don't know why but it seems I'm never happy with my PC's appearance... A few months back, I custom painted my case (that I will finally swap out...) and the yesterday, I mounted a backplate to my EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0 to make it look better. I don't know if I'm just a modder at heart or simply never satisfied. Just 20 minutes ago, the idea of painting the GPU heatsink sprouted like Randy Orton (get it?) and I wonder: is it a good idea? I know overspray will decrease the heat dissipation a lot but I would try to paint as far away from the cooler as possible so to get the least amount of paint on the fins. No, I won't paint the part that is in direct contact with the GPU core. I emailed EVGA asking if it would void my warranty to which they most likely will answer yes but I would like to know what type of paint to use should I go ahead with the project and tips and tricks on how to make it look nice and not impact cooling too much. I know people have painted CPU heatsinks and have gotten away with it because CPU's tend to have lower TDP's than GPU's and that's another factor: is it even safe to do so?? Feel free to sound off and criticize my idea because I really need good advice to decide myself what to do: this is something really important because it's either going to run much hotter or be fine but in both cases, I'm pretty sure warranty will be voided but again, the warranty is 2 years on the GPU and it's nearly over Thanks for telling me how much it could affect my temps (76C absolute max with fans at 1300-1400 RPM, above 76C the fan curve get really aggressive: ~30% @ 76C ---> 100% @82C) Regards

I'm currently doing a build that hase a MSI Z97s Krait edition motherboard, an i-5 4690k processor, corsair 850w power supply, all in an NXZT S340 case. I'm wondering that since the case is a mid, what kind of water cooler I should go with. The top mount only has a mount for one fan and the front has one for two. So I'm not sure if I want a 1x or 2x fan. I also want something that will look good in the case and not terrible by taking up too much real estate. I've been looking at the Corsair h100i and the Corsair h80i (one is single, the other is a double but both use Corsair Link which I really would enjoy). Any suggestions on which water cooler I should go with and why?

I tried to overclock my Pentium G3258 the other day with the stock cooler. I used the same method Linus used in this video, except I have a Z97-A, not a Z97-C(12:02): I did exactly what he did, then booted my computer, started a stress test, and checked my temperatures. The two programs I used were Realtemp and ASUS AI Suite. Immediately it looked like there was something wrong: Realtemp was saying that my CPU temperature was reaching into the 70s, but AI Suite was saying I was well into the mid-40s. Which of these should I trust? I would really like to know because I was going to use ASUS 5-Way Optimization when I got my Hyper 212, and have it set so that when it got to a certain temperature, it would stop. But now that I'm getting two DRASTICALLY different temperature readings, I don't know if I'm going to use it.

Did Microsoft solve 808/810 throttlin/heating issues?
Sharp_3yE posted a topic in Phones and Tablets
Very Interesting. The Lumia 950 has the Snapdragon 808 while the Lumia 950 XL has the Snapdragon 810. Both phones though have a heatsink to keep the processor cooler. I wonder how much this will effect performance? Do you think the heating/throttling issues of the 808/810 will be solved this way? -
My CPU is an AMD a10-6700, and today i tried cleaning the heatsink. When I took off the heatsink, the cpu was attached to it, so I removed it from the heatsink by twisting it a little bit(found a video on YT on how to remove it). I checked the pins carefully on the CPU and NONE of the pins were moved, or even tilted. When I put everything back on, it wont boot at all. All the fans on my gpu, cpu cooler and other fans are working, but the monitor and tvs cant really detect any signal. Several methods I tried: Removing and reinstalling my gpu, removing every single cable in the motherboard and reattaching it. Using a different monitor(tv and hdmi), using the motherboard for monitors and tv instead of the GPU (i tried both several times). One thing I did not do is put a new thermal paste, because frankly i did not have any at the moment. But I highly doubt that would prevent my pc from booting. Another thing is that I did not feel any static at all, and I did most of the stuff on top of a table and not a carpet. But static is a very high possibility, although I cant do anything to test it. Its really late and Im crazy frustrated and just tired. Please if you have any solutions, that would be greatly appreciated. p.s. I have attached photos of my rig, cpu, motherboard, heatsink and etc.

I decided to put Kraken G10 and Kraken X31 on my R9 390 nitro with backplate. But I would like to ask if I also need heatsinks and where do I need to apply them. https://www.ekwb.com/shop/akasa-ak-vmc01-bk-vga-ram-heatsinks Would those heatsinks from EKWB do nice job or do I need something else also?

I have a core i5 4690k running at the stock clock speed (3.5GHz). I'd like to over-clock it to the max clock speed (4.1 GHz). I am wondering if i do overclock my CPU what the best air cooled heat sink is to do this. I'd prefer to not to go over around 25-30 but I'd like to see the best options. These are the specs of my computer: Motherboard - ASUS Z-97c Processor - Intel Core i5 4690k GPU - EVGA GTX 960 SuperSC ACX 2.0 4GB Storage - Samsung 840 evo 250GB Storage - WD 1TB Blue Case - Fractal Design Core 3500 Cooling - 4x 140mm Fans Power Supply - EVGA Supernova B2 750w

I recently replaced my stock cooler for my CPU which is a Core i7 920 with a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 and fired up a game to see the temperature while under load. The temperature runs up to 70c when i'm playing games and at idles at around 51c. Is that normal for a i7? I know the 920 is quite old and runs pretty hot but i'm starting to think maybe I might have over applied or mounted the heatsink wrong.

Hello, First of all I'm french so please apologize my mistakes. I'm planning on painting the Asrock Z97 Extreme6 motherboard. I will receive it next week. I thought painting the heatsinks (vrm + chipset) and two ram slots (the blue ones) in RED. Pictures here : I choose this motherboard for all it's features intead of the fatal1ty professional one because the fatal1ty is a bad family talking about benchmarks etc.. The thing is, I dont know what I need : - Which thermal paste ? - Which spray not to make heatsinks overheating ? - What to use to protect the "Asrock" and "Z97" in Silver ? - What to use to protect the componments while painting the ram slots ? Thank you !

Hello Guys, Help me please. I'm in need a mATX, A88X motherboard. The only ones that are available on my favorite local store are the following: MSI A88XM-E45 Gigabyte GA-F2A88XM-HD3 Asus A88XM-A My dilemma is that I kinda like the gigabyte because it's pure black without accent colors, but I noticed that it does not have a heatsink on the MOSFET unlike the MSI. I plan to use A10-7850k and overclock it to 4.2 or 4.4 maybe. Does the heatsink in the MOSFET really matter? Please enlighten me guys, which is best between the three to use when overclocking. Thanks

EDIT: After Failblox' suggestion, we examing the pads around the heatsink, and they have degraded and have worn through at certain points. We will try replacing them, and update soon. Thanks for all the replies Hi, My friend and I have been struggling with a gtx 670 he bought recently, and have finally had a break. Until today the card had only posted 3 times during our testing. We have used different power supplies, different video outputs, tried the card in several different systems, changed RAM positions, tried several PCI-E slots, etc etc. Nothing would make the card post consistently. As soon as the system was powered on the gpu fans would blast at 100% and it would not post. Today, we reapplied thermal paste, and tried again. Nothing. However, after removing the heatsink entirely, and powering on the system, it posted before turning itself off because of the temperature. It posted every time we tried without the heatsink attached. And when I connected the fan header to the gpu the heatsink fans spun normally, and didn't blast at full straight away. So, our conclusion is that the heatsink itself is causing some issues. Is there an easy fix for this? Has anyone had experience with heatsinks causing issues with gpus? Thanks y'all <3 Edit: Album of photos of the pcb and heatsink: http://imgur.com/gallery/ZmU0a

So basically I attached some heatsinks with thermal tape to the backplate of the cpu and the vrm's (see picture) as they were really hot to the touch. I can't really measure the temps as they are fluctuating all over the place. I would like to know if this is safe (computer's running fine) and if it in theory increases or decreases the temperature of the components. (I know the real world difference is probably really small) Thanks

So my computer has been shutting off randomly for a while now and I've noticed that this only happens when my pc is running silently. Turns out the only reason it was silent was because my cpu fan wasn't running. I'm getting the fan replaced soon, but my fan would sometimes work and sometimes not. Like I can go hours of gaming with my fan running how it should then I come back a few hours later and I try to start a game but my computer shuts off from the cpu overheating. It seems to do this with no rhyme or reason. Would this be a bios setting that I've been skipping over or would this be the fan hardware just getting old? I've had this pc for a year and a half. Here's the stuff in it that matters in this scenario. CPU: AMD FX-8350 Fan: Stock cooler (forgive me for my sins) Motherboard: Gigabyte 990 fxa-ud3 rev 4.0 Thank you so much and Merry Christmas!!!

Just finished building a new PC but now I've discovered that I need a different motherboard as the one I have at the moment doesn't have enough fan headers so the system gets way too hot Ordering a new motherboard and will sell the old one but do I need to re-apply the thermal paste? It would have only been on for a couple days and I'll be using the same processor and heatsink, just on a different motherboard, so is it worth buying some new thermal paste too? Btw I'm using the stock Intel heatsink/fan

I have an z97 board from Asus, but I have seen the thermal armor covers on some motherboard and they look totally sick. I was looking at this: http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-DDR3-1333-Gryphon-Armor/dp/B00CXIN8TC/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1449965832&sr=1-1&keywords=motherboard+armor This is a kit for an other Asus motherboard, but would this fit mine? Thanks!

I recently transferred cases along with a EVGA 650w psu and my PC booted up smoothly after I finished. The problem I am having now is when my PC is off for about 12 hours or so, only my heatsink/fan will start (Hyper evo 212)!?!? Not even my case fans will turn on and same with the LEDs. I have to turn off my psu and turn it back on for my PC to then boot properly. I dont know what the problem is and I'm hoping you can help me. On the other, my PC runs smoothly after its on. No complications. Spec: i5 quad core GTX 660 Z97-C ASUS motherboard 8 GB ram Thank you!!

Hi! My friend recently bought a gtx 670 (used). When he first used it in his system the fans blasted at 100% immediately upon switching on the system and it would not post. We have since narrowed down the issue to heat, and we can successfully boot and keep the system running indefinitely, as long as we don't put a load on the gpu (3D games, stress testing, etc.). However, as soon as we try any gpu-heavy task, the temperature shoots up and the system crashes. We have tried reapplying thermal paste, using lots, using just a little, and everywhere in between. We have a had success in using thermal pads as well. The card seems to run well, and sits at 45-50C at idle. The card is a Gigabyte Windforce 3x gtx 670. The fans all seem to spin fine, but even when the card is super hot the air it exhausts is cold, which leaves us thinking that the heat isn't being conducted into heatsink very well, or at all. We have been trying to get this card working for a week or two now, and have eliminated almost every other possibility. We tried different PSUs, different outputs, tried the card in multiple systems, reinstalling drivers, and removing OC programs that could have caused issues. We're confident the issue is either the card, or the heatsink. Is this something that could be fixed with a new VGA cooler, if we can even find one in NZ? Album of photos of the pcb and heatsink: http://imgur.com/gallery/ZmU0a Thanks!

Hi, I have just received my motherboard, cpu and all other components except the cpu cooler (Hyper TX3 Evo). I do not have a stock cpu cooler, because I bought the cpu second hand. I want to check whether my cpu and motherboard are working. So can I just start the motherboard to see if the bios comes up. Will my CPU be harmed if I turn on the machine for like 30 seconds to test if it works, without any cpu cooler/heatsink? Thanks very much!

I was wondering what the best heatsink for an Intel i3-3220 would be. The 3220 has a TDP of 55w I would like if it's good enought to be a passive cooler. It must be able to fit on a mATX board, in a case with 160mm in cooler clearance to the side panel. 140mm coolers will NOT fit on the board without touching the gpu. Loose/heavy 120mm coolers will also touch GPU. (I know from a saggy hyper 212 evo)

A friend of mine is building a PC soon, and his colour scheme is red. He will be getting an i5-4460, which doesn't need any fancy cooling, just the stock heatsink. As you probably know, the intel heatsink has a blue top, and some rather disgusting multicolour cables. So I was thinking of covering the top part with maybe a metallic red sticker? But I have no ideas for colouring the cables. What do you guys think? Should I just leave it as is? Thanks. Forgot to mention, he doesn't want to spend any more than he has to.
