  1. Budget (including currency): ±R30000 (±$1600) Country: South Africa Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: (Linux) Development, Gaming if possible Other details: I want to buy a laptop I will dual boot with Windows and Ubuntu for remote work (without a monitor in some situations so bigger screen is better). Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated. I have always been a Mac user... I REQUIRE an NVIDIA graphics card for Machine Learning. Thanks!
  2. Hi Community, I´m getting some issues recently while trying to play Dayz again. While trying to connect i´ll get the error 0x00010001 which means that the host is not reachable, but with VPN connection everything works. So it has to be a problem with my settings. I tried to set up another DNS 8.8.8.8 & 1.1.1.1 instead of my pihole. I tried to open ports (set up a wildcard) for testing in my pfsense. I have uninstalled my surfshark vpn (sometimes they do cause the issue) and now I don´t have any idea left to check. Mostly I run an proxy to cloudflare for my whole network, but I disabled it for the testing. Has anyboby an idea what I could do next? Thx a lot
  3. Its time we had a discussion... So many people are buying extremely high-end components that are simply unnecessary and overkill. I figured I would create a guide to help people decide what hardware is best for their use case. How many frames per second do I need? What settings should I run, what resolution should I play at? Lets talk about all these things today... FPS: Lets start by talking about refresh rate and frames per second (FPS). Linus PROVED a while back in a video called "Does High FPS Make you a Better Gamer" that for the VAST MAJORITY of gamers, frame rates beyond 144 FPS/Hz simply make no difference whatsoever. At 144Hz, the smoothness and responsiveness is so fast that your keyboard and mouse themselves attribute the vast majority of the input lag and the human body simply cannot detect lag caused by FPS at these extremely high frame rates. Even professional E-Sports gamers stated in the video that they feel there is basically NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER between 144 and 240 Frame Rates. These professional gamers tend to go for extremely high frame rates anyways to reduce latency in the game's processing, but this guide is aimed at the average gamer, not a professional. These response times on the levels of a few thousandths of a second and the average gamer will NEVER detect them. In the Linus Video, they explored the differences between 60FPS/Hz, 144 FPS/Hz, and 240 FPS/Hz. What they did NOT talk about is at what point do we hit diminishing returns? At what point before 144 FPS is that magical number that feels incredibly smooth and responsive? Allow me to explain... 60 FPS may seem smooth to watch and indeed it is, but 60 FPS isn't quite fast enough for fast-paced gaming. This is because of how much time is needed for your machine to produce the next frame. The amount of time needed to produce each frame at 60 FPS is long enough to where if you move your mouse back and forth quickly, you will notice slight lag, it just won't feel all that responsive, and this is why the ideal gaming frame rate is well above 60 FPS. So how far do we need to go? Well it is somewhat subjective but there are some general "rules of thumb" that can help you decide. Even just a bit above 60 FPS at 75 FPS, things will begin to feel fairly responsive, but if you want the best performance before diminishing returns, there are still gains to be had. At 90 FPS, things will look and feel fantastic, with incredible response. At 90 FPS you will probably be quite satisfied with your experience, but we should reach a bit higher, and here is why... When your machine experiences a huge load in a demanding area of a game, the FPS will drop for a single instant here and there, this is what we know in benchmarking as 1% lows. The problem with 90 FPS gaming is that these 1% lows can still drop you into the 60's of FPS. And when that happens, you will certainly feel it. This is why 90 FPS gaming isn't quite enough to be considered a pretty-much perfect gaming experience. What you should aim for is 100+ average FPS. Once you cross the triple-digit threshold, your gaming experience will be extremely satisfying at all times, because your 1% lows will stay at or above 75-80 FPS. These 1% lows will be so smooth that you probably won't have even noticed that they happened, and so 100+FPS is ideal target for the best value gaming. However, as newer games come out, and your hardware ages, performance will drop a bit over time. But to counter this, most reviews on PC gaming content focus on performance results at Ultra Settings. So as your PC ages, you should be able to drop your settings from Ultra to High in order to keep about the same frame rates in upcoming games for a few years. Keep this in mind for later... GAME SETTINGS: So what about settings and resolution? Lets get settings out of the way - aim for High settings. High settings are a very satisfying experience and the visuals will be stunning. Very High/Ultra settings demand a lot more power for not a whole lot more beauty and so in reality, Ultra settings are unnecessary. But if you aim too low and end up with low or medium settings, you will definitely notice the difference between these settings and High settings. RESOLUTION: Finally - resolution. Resolution is completely subjective. Some people enjoy 1080p, others enjoy 4K. But, there are diminishing returns with graphical fidelity, so lets outline those now: 1080p is great for very small monitors. It looks about as sharp as it can get on 20" and smaller screens, and still looks pretty good up to 30" gaming monitors, but most people can see the difference between 1080p and 1440p, so that choice is yours. 1440p is actually the ideal computer monitor resolution in most cases. It looks insanely sharp on pretty much any standard-sized monitor and most people cannot tell the difference between 1440p and 4K. I personally play at 1440p ultrawide for that extra side-to-side vision and its an incredible experience (3440x1440p) 4K is actually pretty useless in more situations than you might think. Research and scientific studies have shown that the human eye with perfect 20-20 vision actually CANNOT see the difference between 1440p and 4K on any screen up to 50" with your face just 18" away from the screen. Linus even did a video a while back called "4K Gaming is Dumb" that goes over why its pretty much completely unnecessary. Choosing Hardware Based on this Information: PC Hardware reviews pretty much always focus on performance delivered at Ultra gaming settings. Since Ultra settings are unnecessary, you can use the performance gap between High and Ultra settings as your performance overhead for upcoming games in the future. And so... If you want a gaming experience so good that you wouldn't be able to tell if you upgraded further, and you want to use a standard sized monitor like most PC gamers do, then you want to purchase hardware that is shown to deliver an average of at LEAST 100 FPS at Ultra Settings for your chosen resolution, and 1440p is the recommended resolution for standard-sized PC monitors. Now the hardware you choose will depend on if you want standard 2560x1440p resolution or ultra-wide 3440x1440p or whatever other form of 1440p you might want, but if you do your research and keep these rules of thumb in mind, you will end up with an incredible gaming machine without over-spending. Of course everyone will have their opinions, Im sure plenty of people will say I am wrong. But think about it before commenting. When was the last time you played a game at 90-100 FPS and you thought to yourself "This is a terrible experience, I need to upgrade my PC because this is just un-playable".
  4. I'm trying to figure out what would be a good GPU for a Ryzen 5 7600 with 16 gigs of DDR5-4800 RAM. I was originally thinking to go with the RX 7600, but after some research, I'm not sure if it's the best choice. The main reason I picked it originally was for the price, since it's got pretty good performance for under $300 USD. The PC would be used for: Games: Minecraft, War Thunder, EVE Online Other Uses: Blender, General web browsing My monitor would be 1440p.
  5. I was gifted a laptop. I got a brand new free battery from Dell & bought a WD_Black SN770 1TB Gaming SSD. Now I want to leave Windows on the HDD but play all games from the SSD. A game I play is 'Football Manager 24' which pulls graphic data from the documents folder like player faces, team kits & club badges. My question is - How do I keep Windows on the HDD but move all other folders like documents, to the SSD? I know how to move/install Steam games to SSD just the folders. Will I need to move Windows via a clone? Clean install windows? Or is there a way to move folders?
  6. I'm currently looking for a powerful gaming laptop or something similar that can run up to AAA games but also has touch screen 2 in 1 feature for taking notes and productivity. Budget dosent matter. Some suggestions would be great. Note I live in canada so it needs to be avaliable here or be able to ship here.
  7. I currently have an I9 12900KS in my machine right now, which I use mainly use for gaming. But I'm planning to get into some Blender work/3d modeling and rendering, etc. I'm planning on upgrading my CPU, and I'm trying to see which CPU would be a good upgrade. I'm planning to go on AM5, and I'm looking at either 7950X for work, or maybe the 7950X3D for a gaming boost on some off time. I'm torn on which one to go for. Any advice?
  8. Hello, I have an issue with my graphics card. When I play games the image quality is poor, it looks like there's a grain/pixelated filter over it. Does anyone know how to help? I've attached an image bellow as an example in Forza Horizon 5.
  9. Hi everyone, I have recently bought my first gaming laptop - the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro with a RTX 3070 with a AMD Ryzen 7 5800H and 16 Gb of RAM. While I am being able to maintain very good frame rates in most games I have tried (I am using MSI Afterburner with RTSS to keep a steady frame rate and monitor it), I keep on getting slight stutters in many games. These stutters seem to correlate with areas in which the game needs to load new assets and textures (e.g. it always happens in shadow of the tomb raider when transitioning hidden loading screens). I can usually reproduce these stutters by simply crossing specific regions in a game where I suppose the game is loading new textures. The stutters are really limited to these situations and appear as clear frametime spikes. I was wondering if someone has an idea of what this might be - is this simply an aspect of PC gaming? I know there are these issues of shader compilation, but I feel that this is different since it does not improve by repetition. On the other hand, I keep on seeing people with RTX 3000s complaining about stutters. I guess I just wanted to understand if there is something I can do to solve this issue or if this is just normal. I have already done all kinds of uninstalling and reinstalling drivers that is usually suggested. Thank you!
  10. As the title suggests, I need help choosing a windows laptop for my partner. My budget is sub £1000 ideally around the £600-700 range. As my partner needs to take their laptop to lectures, being relatively lightweight would be good. It will mainly be used for taking notes however it will also be used for some light gaming (Skyrim, Minecraft, Slime Rancher etc.) Nothing too taxing. It would also be GREAT to have a fingerprint scanner as my partner has ADHD and gets super frustrated with passwords. The keyboard and typing experience is not a huge issue for them, as they are terrible at typing anyways and the same goes for the trackpad, as long as both are functional. My partner is NOT a techy person and so will not be un/impressed by extra nice keyboard/display technology/refresh rate/bezels/ Many thanks to the kind people of the LTT forum. Ordered List of priorities: 1. Decent boot speed and performance. 2. Practicality and real world convenience (weight and size). 3. Light gaming. 4. Ease of use.
  11. I can't find any reviews on this specific model... planning on buying for casual gaming and casual photo/video editing. it's 1920x1080, IPS, 100Hz
  12. Hi LTTers, Background My name is Tim, born in 1985 and avid gamer ever since I first held an NES controller and played my first 486DX PC. Me and my wife bought a house with a ton of space 2 years ago and I figured, about time I really get myself a dedicated gameroom. Back in my appartement my home office also functioned as a gameroom but with all this space I managed to give each specific thing (work/pleasure) its own room. I also host a pretty mean home lan every 6 months and now we are up to 14-16 people but more on that later. First some general info on what I am doing and why. I started this thread as I think it is a cool, ever evolving work in progress and I'm very much open to cool ideas and input from you guys to make things better or optimize specific parts of the room/setup. First things first, the network. Next to our garage there is a laundry room with a seperate cabinet which I decided to use as the main network hub of the house. We also have a couple of offices in the house and they are connected with a 10gbit link, there is some basic patching from this cabinet into the living area of the house for televisions and decoders, also POE AP's. The link to the gameroom is still 1gbit which kinda sucks as I also have an RS1221 NAS in the rack now over 10gbit but currently the main usage for the gameroom is basic internet and my current connection is only 1Gbit/down so no real use for 10gbit uplink. Eagerly waiting for 10gbit internet, should take a couple of months and 1Gbit really is enough for downloading some games but the uplink is only 50mbit which is horrible obviously. (the 10Gbit is also nice to have with our lanparties) Mainly using Ubiquiti stuff. Very pleased with how it manages and deploys. Every ethernet port in the house is POE, using Ubiquiti G4 Pro's as security cameras in combination with a 4 drive UNVR. There is another network hub in the office side of the house (we have 4 offices there) but that's not really relevant here. Just trying to give you guys an idea of the setup. September 2021 Collection Mania I always wanted a main media center with a big TV that had all sorts of consoles hooked up and ready to go. I still have a few consoles which I had as a kid or bought myself but I started out with this: NES Sega Gamegear Xbox 360 Xbox One Gameboy Switch At this point I wasn't even using my gameroom yet for that purpose and was still playing games from my office but I decided it was time to get things going. Time to add some missing consoles to the collection. I was very excited to discover the SNES, sometimes played it a friend when I was a kid but no real experience with it. What excited me most was the N64. For some reason, I always wanted one and I remember renting it from a video store sometimes to play Goldeneye and Diddy Kong Racing and have very fond memories of that. Sega Megadrive (Genesis). Also never had one, this one I also played at a friend. Mortal Kombat 3! Time to get some stuff together and start planning on how to set it up. I used the 65 inch TV from Sony that I had from my appartment to have a rudimentary setup in the room and used some old tv cabinet. Nothing fancy but atleast I could play games for now on consoles. October 2021 Being the PC masterrace guy that I am, it was about time to get my gaming setup going in the gameroom. I needed a dedicated gaming desk that fit the purpose: gaming. I looked into the secret lab but found it to be very expensive for what it was and I stumbled upon the Ikea gaming desk they had not long ago introduced. I HIGHLY recommend this for the price. Super rigid, cable management and the desk itself has a very nice texture and doesn't require you to use a mousepad. As you can tell, the definition of a work in progress. A BIG PHAT MESS I added a hue lightstrip on the desk in between the open space in the desk surface. Gives a great effect and it's awesome for easy cable management. December 2021: A minor network update to the gameroom I decided to get a decent switch. Planning ahead to install a 10gbit link between the gameroom (upstairs) and the main network rack of the house. I decided to go for a Ubiquiti Enterprise switch which has 2 x 10Gbit SFP and 8 x 2.5Gbe with POE+, plenty of grunt as a network backbone in the gameroom. Januari 2022 part 1: Console Cabinet First steps I finally figured it was time to get my consoles set up in a more decent manner. KALAX from Ikea, you are my favorite piece of furniture. I saw someone on pinterest doing something with a single KALAX using it as a TV stand with the consoles underneath and I decided to expand on that idea. I also added a Hue lightstrip behind the cabinet so I can create ambient lighting as I please. I plan to cover the rear of the cabinet so it is no longer see through but with individual lighting necessairy in each part of the cabinet, that's a lot of work and I wasn't really up for the job at that time. A to be continued project. Januari 2022 part 2: THE FIRST LANPARTY Ì always said, if I move into a house, I'm throwing a LAN party so end of januari it was about time. Time for some room upgrades and preparations. Going downstairs causes downtime, so, first I bought a fridge for the gameroom and did some cleaning before installing some tables. I added a table in between the console cabinet and left of my desk. After a supply run, got some snacks and drinks ready. I used my old dining room table from the appartment which fit perfectly behind the sofa (also recovered from my appartment) and we were able to seat around 10 people in the room. Sorry for the poor video quality but atleast now you have an idea what size the room is and how it looks like. Added the final tables, threw some cables around and the first LAN was a go with 8 people! And offcourse in between time for some retro games on the SNES (using an Analogue Super NT for this) Februari-April 2022: Minor upgrades After a succesful LAN it was waiting for the next one so time to keep upgrading the room in between LANS. I decided to get rid of the big table behind the couch and give the room a deserved LAN center upgrade by adding gaming desks. These Trust gaming desks are excellent value. You can get these sometimes well under 100 EUR/USD and they are solid. I wouldn't recommend these for 49 ultrawides but for a regular 34 wide-ish gaming setup, it is perfect. Also comes with cupholders and headphone holder! Also decided to do some cable management in certain parts of the room. (for the fixed gaming desks) Dedicated power bricks per table and a dedicated network switch. Should make it easier for people. Just arrive, plug and play! As you can tell, I also bought some gaming chairs for these tables We are MEN (and possibly some women) and we play videogames. But us men, we also like beer. So playing videogames whilst drinking beer, even better, so I got THIS: Get beers from draft, always cold and works great. Perfect addition for the lan room. Also I noticed all the empty bottles were such a hassle, this is MUCH easier. Then for some shelves to add some of the figurines. I relocated the old dining table and used 2 more foldable tables and for the upcoming edition, we were able to fit 10 people in the room! Once again, just a simple phone recording, so please ignore the bad quality, I will try for future posts to get the quality up! Also bought some XXL mousepads for the non-gaming desks. May 2022: LAN TIME June-July 2022: Arcade cabinets I always loved arcades as a kid so I decided to get some arcade machines. Could be fun to hang out with some friends and play some arcade games. These are not the real arcade cabinets but like 75% versions in size, good enough for what it is and gives a cool atmosphere to the room aswel! (also, Metal Slug is life) I also managed to get my hands on a Sega Dreamcast. I always wanted one as a kid and I am very excited to finally grab a good deal. Console in perfect condition, lots of accessories and plenty of games for a very fair price. Instantly had to try it out September 2022: Another LAN Coming Up, time for expansion and upgrades! Our lan is a huge success. I got more people wanting to come that I can seat, so I figured I would fix that issue. First I gave the small tables between my desk and the console cabinet a small upgrade and installed dedicated tables again including new gaming chairs. What was hard to tell on previous pictures, but there is a room inside the gameroom. I used this to expand on the LAN operation. The main room would now fit 8 people and the second room could fit 6 people. I used the party tables in the second room, removed the door to give it a more unified feeling instead of having everyone in seperate rooms and started preparing. I also received my Alienware AW3423DW QD-led screen which I ordered 2 months before. An absolute beast and even though I already had very good gaming monitors from Asus, this was a major step-up that I didn't expect to be honest. Preparing lan parties and setting tables is a lot of work and very messy Also decided to tackle a small bottleneck we had: downloading new games at the same time. I decided to set up a caching server. I wanted to replace my working computer at home eitherway so decided to use that system for it. It is a threadripper 1950x with 64Gb of RAM so plenty fast to fill a 10gbit adapter to the network. With some smart network layout, at most 3 people shared a 2.5Gbit link thru a switch to the caching server. Say hello to the tower of doom! (bottom is the caching server, top is my racing rig I decided to use as my main gaming rig, my old gaming rig in silver I used for a friend who didn't have a computer) The big Lian Li case on top used to be my main rig in 2016. 3 radiotors, 2 reservoirs, 2 pumps and hosted the threadripper and a 1080ti SLI setup all custom looped. I love that case. Currently it hosts a 5800x and 3090 with a simple cpu loop. Supply runs for the lan include toilet paper. Poop of Thrones volume 1 I have an extra toilet right next to the lan room so that is quite handy. We only need to leave the 'area' for food now Also added some more shelves and bought a lot of stuff in the meantime console wise. Also added an extra fuse and some new power outlets around the room to spread the power load for 14 computers. Nice overview showing the progress including all the network cables, power outlets on the tables. No more wires random on the ground and no chance to trip. Pleased with the result! Also added a screen to monitor the LANCache server on my setup. October 2022: FINAL LAN PREPS AND LANPARTY TIME Final room tour! LANparty in motion: December 2022: Dedicated LAN PC's I do have quite a bit of hardware around so I created some extra LAN pc's. Had to buy a case or PSU here and there but had several GPU, CPU and mobos around and my old 1440p 165hz gaming monitors. Bought 3 identical 60 percentile Sharkoon SGK50 boards (which are insane for the price, trust me, I'm a keyboard guy), 3 new headphones and 3 gaming mice. Now it's easier for a friday evening get togheter with some buddies, have a beer and play some quake champions or consoles. 2 systems running a 1070 GPU, 1 system my old 1080 ti. Still works great for those competitive multiplayer games. Februari 2022: Upcoming plans and LAN party End of april we have another LAN for 15ish people. Been super busy at work so not a lot of time recently so I opted to order what I needed already and start installing as soon as I have some spare time. Yesterday got home, a big pallet with 6 gaming tables to upgrade the second room to gamedesks. I already had ordered the gaming chairs to match also Next up is installing a stairs. You can't really tell from the pictures but there is a second floor inside the gaming room that currently is not accessible. Early april, a company will install a custom small footprint rotating stairs. Not sure what I will do with the layout but I have 4 more arcade cabinets coming and thinking about creating a small arcade upstairs. Pic to show the upstairs: I will put the stairs now where the table is right about where the Zelda poster hangs. My current console collection sits at: - Gameboy OG (oem en black) - GBC - GBA (fully modded IPS) - New 3DS XL (NIB in orange en CIB modded) - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Switch - PS1 Phat - PS2 Phat - PS3 Phat - PS5 - Mega Drive 1 - Dreamcast - Gamegear - Analogue Super NT - Xbox 360 - Xbox One - Xbox Series X - PSP1000 - PSP3000 - PS Vita 1000 Still looking for an OG Xbox, Sega Saturn, Sega Master System and a TurboGrafx / PC-Engine (mainly waiting on the Analogue Duo) To be continued...
  13. So I am considering buying a new router since the one I got from my ISP can only do wifi and have a little switch connected for wired. The problem is that my pc when connected to the switch can't find devices connected to the router via wifi. So I wanted to get a router that has wifi and a few lan ports instead of having the router and switch seperate. From the ISP I got this: https://eyenetworks.no/en/air-4920-product-information/ and the switch looks exactly like this just smaller (could not find the exact same) https://eu.dlink.com/uk/en/products/dgs-1008d-8-port-10-100-1000mbps-gigabit-switch So I am not really sure what price point I would be looking at. I could maybe throw 50 dollars on a router and be more happy with it than what I have now or maybe I would need to spend a lot more? I have only ever had the standard routers I got from my ISP. I had considered wanting to use my quest 2 headset with oculus airlink but I am not sure if any router would do or if I had to buy something more expensive like a "Asus rt-ax86u" for example? I play games on pc that is always wired, my ps5 use wifi and is in the same room as the router, and then I use my smart tv that is upstairs that is in the room right above the router. So it isn't a huge house or anything. I hope that someone will be able to give som suggestions or information. Cause I am not sure what exactly I am looking for or what price point I need to look at to get what I just explained?

  15. Hey! Im planning on buying a 40 to 43 inch 4k TV which Im gonna use with a PS5. But I can't decide which one to buy. So I am asking here. The TV should have a good image quality. Good enough for gaming at like 2m distance. Most important to me is a good pixel response time and as low flicker as possible (headache...). SmartTV and Sound is pretty unimportant since I have a external sound system and I will only use the screen for my PS5. So the quality and stuff of those two things don't really matter. Whats made it pretty hard for me to decide though is the price. I can't pay too much. since I live in switzerland it is a bit hard for me to give a certain number. So I guess just suggest some TVs meeting those requierements and that are not waaaay too expensive. Thank you very much!
  16. Hello, I just built a new PC and when I run games the GPU isn't on 100% usage. Depending on the game it's around 30 to 60-70%. In beamng-drive the average is 50-60% which is around 100-120fps. And sometimes the GPU usages goes up to 80-90% and then I get 170-200fps and then it drops again to 60%. most of my games run good when the GPU is on 50-60% but of course I want the performance I paid for. Any guess what it can be? I guess it is some sort of setting since I sometimes get 100% and then It drops. I play on 1080p 240hz and all games are on high to ultra settings. Specs: RTX 4070 TI Ryzen 5 7600x 850W PSU RAM 32GB 4800MHZ M.2 SSD WD BLACK ETC ETC
  17. I am looking to get a new monitor for my PC. In general, I do not know much about monitors and would like some assistance in choosing one. One of the most important things I am looking for in a monitor is the ability to play dart games with greater clarity. Whenever I play a game with a dark area and a bright light in the middle, the entire dark area becomes harder to see as a result. While I have researched IPS, OLED, and microLED, I am still not sure which to choose due to the pros and cons of each. Here are some small things I am also looking for the monitor to have: -Min of 144Hz -at least 1 DisplayPort and HDMI -Contrast Ratio over 1,000:1 (I prefer not dynamic) - High Display Colors - I would like speakers built but i can go without them - would like 4k but ill be okay with smaller resolution if it cost too much I got my budget is over a $1k usd but I honestly would prefer to find something not around a $1k. I would like to have some money left over so I can buy more stuff for my computer. Some things I'll be using the monitor for is gaming, art and 3d modeling

  23. I recently built a new gaming PC (Specs below) and am experiencing strange clouds of white dots when playing games. I have noticed this on RDR2, Far Cry 5 and Doom Eternal (it's especially bad in Doom). I've tried changing the graphics settings on each game but nothing seems to make a difference.
