So, here's gonna be my very first build log! Are you excited? I know i am! This is by no means my very first build. I've build around 5 PC's before, some really nice ones too imo, but never really got to making a real proper build log. Time to change that, no? So, let's get to it then. The name of the beast: Black Mac. "Why?" You ask? Well, because this PC is gonna be build in a modded Mac case. Specifically this one: Now that right there is a beauty, isn't it? This beast will be a video editing workstation for my older bro, who is in need of a new one. I originally planned for this to be a F@H PC, but as my post in the thread below describes, those plans are off for now. Now for the meat and potatoes, the actually important stuff. The (updated) specs! Case- Powermac G5 (m-ATX modded) (purchased) CPU- Intel Xeon E5 2603 V4 (purchased) MOBO- Asus X99-M WS/SE (Purchased) GPU- Nvidea GTX Titan X (Maxwell) 2-Way SLI (Purchased) PSU- EVGA Supernova 850W (Purchased) SSD- WD Blue M.2 1TB RAM- 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 (purchased) Cooling- Custom Cooling loop! (hardline?) Right now i'm going to keep the stock cooling in because of time constraints. So, expect updates as the parts start rolling in. I, for one, am really looking foreward to this building adventure. Adios!

Does anyone else think that Luke should do another folding video? I think if they had extra server space, they could make a decent killing in views and ad money by making a balls to the wall cpu and gpu folding machine.

I've been folding on my CPU and it works beautifully, and I set it to 2 cores so I can run it while I'm doing anything non-CPU intensive, then up to all 4 cores when it's idle. I want to fold with my GPU, however, it gets a bit too hot and loud for my liking when it's constantly 100% stressed. Is there a way to use only a portion of GPU power to fold, so I can reduce thermals and noise a little?

hi, just wondering if im able to only farm using a cpu. I have 3 spare pc's that could fold but I dont have any gpu apart from the intergrated ones? Would it be worth it to set them all up only using the integrated graphics? (i do plan on getting some dedicated GPU's when I have some spare cash) The CPU's are as follows: 2x core 2 duos (decent spec one not old ones) 1x AMD phenom x4 The power billisnt an issue btw Thanks.

Just used the uninstaller to remove it as the folding wasn't starting on my cpu and was going to try a re-install to see if it fixes it. I also checked the box to remove data. The uninstaller seemed to have taken this as permission to DELETE MY ENTIRE DOCUMENTS FOLDER, WTF!!! Couldn't even stop the uninstall with right click and close, but I didn't try using end task and it was too late by that point anyway. So I am now currently running a recovery program to try and get all my files and save games back. Hopefully I will be able to get everything back. Rather furious right now

Hello, my friend is buying his first pc and Im helping to get him some parts and am selling my gtx 970 to him. Now I need a new gpu and Ive always wanted to get the top of the line gpu, just to see how it feels to have every game maxed out ( you know PC master race and stuff) and selling that 970 would mean a new gpu would cost 200eur less. So now should I get the GTX 1080 for around 540 eur or I get the GTX 1080 for 750 eur? I do some gaming but most of the time I leave my PC Folding and has been since the summer break ended and before it started. Ive been getting 300k ppd with the gtx 970 and having over a mill with the 1080ti would be nice, but I dont know if its worth 200 eur more...

Does anyone know a way you can pre-download a bunch of work units - say, a week's worth so it can work on them while offline, and then upload them all when it regains connection?

I think I just made top 1,000 for Linus Tech Tips official folding team? I'm so excited! I can't believe it. It really feels like I am contributing.

I used to have 2 660's in SLI. Ever since I replaced them with a GTX 1060 folding@home no longer runs on my GPU. I have uninstalled and re-installed and am running the latest drivers, but I can't get it to run (The usage is set to full). Has anyone else had problems with 10 series cards, or any idea why it may now be working? Thanks Mike

I just started folding with a new 1070 that I upgraded to a couple days ago (running driver v.373.xx). Things have been going well and I'm getting some nice PPD, especially compared to my old card. However, the card is running at the stock core clock while folding (1506MHz) and will not boost to the ~1800MHz it will during games. Setting a core clock offset in Afterburner won't raise the core clock while folding either (despite applying a +200MHz offset, it remains at 1506MHz). The "Tips, Tricks and FAQ" sticky mentions that for Maxwell cards, they will have a tendency to stay in the P2 power state when folding instead of switching to the P3 state. I know that post is for Maxwell cards and the1070 is Pascal, but I wasn't sure if the two were still similar in regards to the power state problem. Nor do I know if the recommendation for the Maxwell cards would also work/apply to the Pascal cards. Is anyone else folding with a 1070 (or other 10-series card) and have the same issue with core clock? I'm very happy with the improvement I'm already getting with the base clock alone and wouldn't be disappointed leaving it at the base clock. However, I can't help but feel I'm leaving some performance on the table and would still like to improve it if possible. Any help or insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Im new to F@H, but i wanted to contribute so i tried it. Everything is working fine but there's one thing that I dont understand: My name(Anakim) and Team(LTT) on the software are correct When I click on my name to see my stats the name is still correct but the team appears to be : "Default(No team specified)" here's the Link Can someone tell me if it's normal or I have to fix something on my settings?

Updated Instructions for Ubuntu 22.04: Why Linux: It will run well on older hardware that can be re purposed for a dedicated folding machine. You can disable automatic updates. It will perform 5-10% better than Windows due to Driver and OpenMM Core 21 issues in Windows. I have found it to be more stable than Windows with months of up-time. YMMV Why Ubuntu: It is well supported by a large Community and the Long Term Support (LTS) version is supported by Canonical until 2023. Prerequisites: Pretty much any 2GHz or faster processor with a minimum of 2-3GB DDR3 and a PCIe 2 x16 slot should work. If your not running DHCP on your router you’ll need an available IP Address, and to note your Subnet Mask and Gateway Address. NVidia GTX or RTX GPU (AMD GPUs are NOT covered here yet, but if anyone wants to contribute please do so) OS Install (Ubuntu Desktop 18.04.3): This is the LTS Desktop version. More adventurous types may want to consider installing the LTS Server version for a less cluttered install. There are several other guides on how to setup a Linux Folding Rig (see the Reference Section at the end) Note: Ubuntu 19 has removed support for Python2 so FAHControl will not work Download Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS Desktop ISO File Burn the ISO to a USB key using Rufus or similar tool Boot from the USB key and start the install For US English just accept the defaults Partition the whole disk as a single “Root” partition, don’t bother creating a separate swap partition. use the default Gnome Desktop (GDM3) for now, it can be changed later. OS Configuration: Graphics Drivers: OpenCL: Folding Client: Configure Folding Client: Configure GPU and, optionally, CPU Slots Configure Advanced Options (Beta Flag, Pause on Start, ...) Configuring X-Windows and GPU: System Administration 101: The Terminal is your Best Friend Starting, Stopping and Restarting Services Package Updates (Aptitude, dpkg, apt ...) Monitoring System Health (htop, ps, sensors, ...) Monitoring GPU Performance (nvidia-settings, nvidia-smi) Monitoring Folding Performance (FAHclient) Advanced Topics: Multiple GPUs In most standard mid and full-tower ATX cases with dual-fan cards the lower card will cook the upper card. I usually install the higher performing card in the lower slot so it is not breathing the hot air from the adjacent card. I have noticed that running the fans on the lower card about 10% above the stock value will result in the upper card getting cooler air and running at a lower temperature and boosting higher. To anyone who has more than one folding machine; how do you monitor and/or manage your multiple machines? I'm aware of the "clients" list that's built right into the Advanced Control Menu, but I was wondering if any alternatives exist. Also, what if one of your machines is not on the same local network? I'm sure you could port forward from the internet and the Advanced Control Menu would work fine, but exposing it to the internet just doesn't feel right (even if a password is specified). A VPN is always an option, but that seems like a lot to just monitor a client. Thoughts/experiences?

So I found this Tesla K40 on newegg for like $100. Are they useful for anything? Could you use them as a folding card? Its so cheap I just want it ?? https://www.newegg.com/hp-model-f1r08a/p/1DW-000D-00025?Item=9SIA5HA8JJ0069

I've been using F@H for a bit over a week actively (I think) at this most recent go at it, and at the same time I started to dabble with BOINC. Right now I have CPU in F@H paused, only running GPU jobs. BOINC is using the CPU. I noticed that at no point with F@H does my GPU utilization go over about 40%. I'd like BOINC to use the GPU as well, but only another ~40% or so leaving some cycles for me to play light games. However, I see noting in BOINC manager to throttle GPU aside from the option to only use GPU while the computer (keyboard and mouse) are idle. Is there a good way to do what I would like to do, or do I just need to enable GPU, let the computer figure it out, but not have any extra GPU cycles left to play with?

I am having the same issue. I switched from a RX 480 + RX 580 to a GTX 1070 and it isnt starting. I tried everything above. I even reinstalled and stuff. any idea ? Reference this topic; https://linustechtips.com/main/modcp/reports/77538/

Nvidia launched their newest GPU today the GTX 1660 Ti. AnandTech in their review tested the Single-Precision FAHBench on a EVGA's lowest end model the 1660 Ti XC Black Gaming and it produces about the same as the 1070FE so about 700-800kPPD. The model tested is a 2.75-slot "short board" not the likely better performing XC Ultra Gaming that features dual fans and a 2 slot width more compatible with multiple GPU setups on most z370/390 and x-series boards. So at MSRP of 279US$ for the XC Black and $309US$ for the Ultra models do these represent the best bang for the buck for folding these days given the Ray Tracing Tax built into the RTX models? Looking at Value (kPPD/$) and Efficiency (kPPD/W) we see: Cost Yield TDP Value Efficiency Model MSRP kPPD W kPPD/$ kPPD/W RTX 2080 Ti 999 2400 260 2.40 9.23 RTX 2080 699 1400 225 2.00 6.22 RTX 2070 499 1275 185 2.56 6.89 RTX 2060 349 1050 160 3.01 6.56 GTX 1660 Ti 279 750 130 2.69 5.77 So the 1660 Ti does not have a value advantage over the 2060 and is less efficienct based on estimated performance. If real world testing confirms the yield at 700-800kPPD then the 2060 is still the better buy if cost is not a limiting factor.

Hey guys, I am running GPU folding on my 1060 with client v 7.5.1_x86. Everything is going good, except when I attempt to open the protein viewer. It doesn't load, and I see these messages in the event log : 08:07:38:ERROR:Receive error: 10053: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine. 08:07:54:ERROR:Receive error: 10053: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine. 08:08:10:ERROR:Receive error: 10053: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine. 08:08:26:ERROR:Receive error: 10053: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine. 08:08:42:ERROR:Receive error: 10053: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine. 08:08:58:ERROR:Receive error: 10053: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine. There was an older thread on LTT(https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1061385-problem-with-foldinghome-protein-viewer/?tab=comments#comment-12542647) with the same problem and error code, but I couldn't find any relevant solutions there, so I decided to post a new one. Also, the overall statistics(https://stats.foldingathome.org/os) haven't been updated since the time I started folding, around 3-4 months ago. Does anyone know why this is so?

I have a GTX 1080 in my machine that normally gets 700K ~ 800K on its own. I recently added 2 Quadro 2000s and they can do around 100K a piece . The problem is that when I run all 3 the GTX 1080 drops to around 100K PPD. I am running a Ryzen 2600X so I am not short on CPU cores and each GPU gets one. When I tried to setup all of the GPU slots it complained that I needed to manually set the OpenCL index. I have them set at 0, 1 and 2. If I remove the two Quadro 2000 slots the 1080 goes back to its normal performance. Does anyone know why this happens? Am I configuring FAH Client wrong? I really want to have all 3 running full tilt.

So I decided to run a folding client on my gaming computer temporarily. I have a server that is my main host but I wanted to pull some more points in so I started folding on my gaming rig, GPU only. GPU is running around 65 C to 70 C. The question is, will running a GPU at 100% like this for let's say a month have any negative effects? Thermal paste, stability, life?
