  1. What is the worst computer brand you know or experienced with? Explain why! WRONG: "Alienware" RIGHT: "Alienware because they don't use reliable parts for their desktops, don't specify what parts they are using for their desktops, & their laptops are always using lower end and/or older CPUs while their competitors such as MSI & Asus use higher end CPUs for their laptops. They provide the worst bang for your buck because there are better valued gaming laptops such as those from MSI & Asus for a little more or even less. The Graphics Amplifier is a pathetic joke because overtime your system will bottleneck & the GA undermines mobility." Because this topic is so successful, I made a "happier" version of this topic, titled Best Computer Brand Ever. If you want to comment the best computer brand you know or experienced with, click here.

  3. I downloaded the latest version of GeForce experience and game drivers for the new release of Batman, when I found that GeForce Experience no longer supports my GeForce GTX 580. RIP GeForce Experience. Can anyone tell why they did this? I always had game optimization in the past until now.
  4. I'm looking to apply for university and am interested in computer engineering. I am looking at government funding to help pay for my tuition and partial living expenses and the application form for this looks for an action plan for what I am going to do with this education. I am looking for someone who may be in a feild relating to computer engineering to help me better understand just what it is I am committing to. As of right now I've chosen computer engineering as the course I want to take simply because the synopsis provided seemed like exactly what I would love to do, but that is all I know about it. I need to know what kind of job opportunity this education opens up and where to look for these jobs. What opportunities for advancements exist in these carreers. The kind of work environment I can expect, and what type of hours to be ready to work. Can I do some at home training by myself and if so how? What kind of equipment will I have to familiarize myself with? These types of questions so that I can be confident that this is actually what I want to do and am not just going to drop it realizing it's not what I wanted.
  5. Intorduction: Hello to everyone reading this thread. This will not be a general review like the ones that are mostly posted around here, but rather will be focused on my personal reasons for getting the mouse as well as my experiences from living with it for a week and a half. Ever since I was forced to sell my G600s for some extra cash last summer, I was stuck with a G300 (non S version) as replacement. For all good qualities which G300 had it was just too small and too cheaply made for me have any kind of attachment to it and seek to replace it. Therefore, after only two months of usage I began to search for a new replacement. The only problem was that nothing was really to my liking. Everything that had either a bad sensor, accelerations issues, uncomfortable shape, bad color scheme (I am talking about you,you stupid blue G502) or it was made by Razer, haha. As a result I was stuck with my G300 for five more months in desperate waiting for the RAT PRO X, which at least seemed a bit more promising, especially after its debut at this years CES (2015). However, in the meanwhile the paint on my G300 was badly fading and making me mad. Things got even worse when I accidentally spilled some silver paint on it while I was repainting my rims (#justcarguythings). After that accident I decided to just go to the local electronics store and just get whatever I find least offensive and live with it. Having set my mind that was going to get some p.o.s. mouse I entered the store and something amazing happened - the MX Master was just standing there right in front of me. It was being showcased as a new arrival. It was love from first site! Without even considering the price-point or that it is wireless, something I dislike a lot, I grabbed a box. I just needed to have one! Aesthetics: Since my Xperia Compact's camera just can't present the mouse in its full glory, the pictures shown below will be "borrowed" from the Internet. As you can probably see from the pictures, the mouse has a lot of resemblance with the old MX Revolution, which it is intended to replace. I never really liked the Revolution, it was a bit to skinny for my hand and never really felt right. The MX MAster, however, has the most perfect shape there is - fat, minimalist, ergonomic and features a thumb-wrest. What is there not to like? I can probably imagine a lot of people will be put off by the slight bronze accents around the outer shell of the mouse. I am too, it is just not my thing, I would much rather preferred it to be a silver lining. Nevertheless, this is a small trade-off for having such a beautiful mouse. Tech Specs: Mouse (height x width x depth): 3.4 in (85.7 mm) x 5.0 in (126.0 mm) x 2.0 in (48.4 mm) Mouse Weight (including battery): 5.1 oz (145 g) Unifying receiver dimensions: (height x width x depth): 0.7 in (18.4 mm) x 0.6 in (14.4 mm) x 0.3 in (6.6 mm) Receiver weight: 0.07 oz (2 g) Sensor technology: Darkfield Laser sensor - Nominal value : 1000 dpi - Minimal and maximal value : 400 dpi to 1600 dpi (can be set in increments of 200 dpi) Battery life: up to 40 days on a single full charge* *Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions. Battery: rechargeable Li-Po (500 mAh) battery Number of buttons: 5 Scroll wheel: Yes Gesture button: Yes Wireless operating distance: 32 ft (10 m) Wireless technology: Advanced 2.4GHz wireless technology The one thing that my not appeal to us enthusiast is probably the fact that is wireless. I personally, was also worried about that, but there is a cable included in the box, which makes the mouse wired. Nonetheless, the wireless implementation on this product is exceptional. There are two options of connecting it to your PC, besides using the provided cable - proprietary wireless transmitter and Bluetooth. In addition to that the battery is claimed to last up to 40 days of usage, but will get to that part in my experience part of the review, which is coming up next. Personal Experience: As stated earlier I have had this mouse for just over a week and I love every aspect of it, besides one,yes we are starting with some negative aspects of the mouse. Both the forwards and backwards buttons on the left hand side of the mouse are very tiny and too much to the back, making them practically unusable. Because of that I was forced to remap my back command to the thumb button, which is implemented in the thumb wrest. The only problem with it is though that it is a bit mushy and does not offer satisfying feedback that it has been pressed. Having discussed what I don't like, now lets move to the strong parts of the mouse. Firstly, the scroll wheel. The scroll wheel is amazing! Unlike in previous Logitech mice, the fast scroll wheel is both adaptive and digitally controlled only by the push of a button on the top of the mouse. This is a great feature since you can easily scroll through long files and still have that precision when you actually need it. Left and right buttons are very good and have rapid response, without being too light, but that is kind of expected from Logitech. They know what they are doing. The mouse has also the option to be connected to three devices at the same time. One can decide which one to activate by pushing a button on the bottom of the mouse. This is a great option for people who want to control their workstation, gaming rig and laptop without needing three separate peripherals. Wireless, yes we are finally coming to the most important feature of the mouse. I personally hate anything that wireless simply because such devices never work right and their batter dies too fast. Not the case with the MX Master, though. The battery lasts for an entire week of very heavy usage even on the initial half charge, which it came with. I had to charge it for the first time yesterday. The charge was complete in three hours. There is no delay or high latency, which is usually a key drawback of wireless, making it perfect for playing even shooters. Conclusion: The MX Master is a solid product, which however comes with a price premium. there are very few things not to like about the mouse besides the price - small forward and backward buttons and a bit mushy thumb button. Other than that the mouse is perfect in every regard, despite that it is designed to be wireless. Feel free to click that like button if you enjoyed the review and post comments below to let me know what you guys think about the mouse and whether you are willing to spend that amount of cash to have one.

  7. Hi guys! I'm from Singapore, and just wondering if you guys have been to Singapore, and more importantly, if you have gone to Sim Lim Square, the infamous tech mall. Would love to hear your experiences and how you guys dealt with those who tried to scam you:) Hope you guys enjoy this thread:)
  8. Mac or PC,Tablet, Phone what ever tell us about the worst or craziest thing you ever dealt with when you were using tech Ex: My Desktop caught on fire when I installed Minecraft < did not happen its a example lol
  9. I recently had to RMA my ZenBook UX303LN due to a malfunctioning headphone port and thought I'd share my experience with you. Getting the papers was easy enough. i just had to hop on the ASUS website, start a live chat, and within 20 minutes I had the papers to send my computer in. I sent the computer in on the 11th of February and ASUS got it on the 17th. They fixed it and sent it back out on the 18th. i got it back on the 23rd with not only a working headphone jack, but updated bios, firmware, raid drivers, and various other updates provided by ASUS. There was no bloatware installed when i got it back and the computer has had no problems since. The only thing i wish wouldn't have taken so long was the shipping, but it was free so i'm not really in a place to complain!
  10. At the time of this post I feel the the forums are far superior than the nightmare is to find good thoughts/opinions/criticism/praise/ideas in You Tube. I wanted to know how members, junior members, veteran members, moderators, industry affiliates, and administrators would rate the forums based on your experiences on the Linus Tech Tips Forums. This should help newbie what to expect both future good members and possible trolls/haters that will try poison this forum. Finally post why you gave your rating with some some reasons like pointing out some flaws/strengths in the forum.
  11. I have Nvidia Geforce Experience installed on my computer and I honestly like it, or at least I did when the driver installation feature worked. For quite some time now I haven't been able to install drivers using Geforce experience. The drivers download just fine, but when I go to install using either express installation or custom installation, I get an error message saying, "Installation Cannot continue," after I click "Yes" on the security windows which pops up asking me if Geforce can continue. The thing is though, that it only says, "Installation Cannot Continue," nothing else, just that it cannot continue. Geforce Experience is downloaded to the same drive on which I install the drivers to, which is my solid state drive. I can still install new drivers, I just have to go to the Nvidia website to download them. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, did you find a way to fix it?
  12. NCIX: N/A Amazon: http://geni.us/ZcG Is a Radeon R9 M295X 8GB video card powerful enough to drive an enjoyable gaming experience on dat beautiful 5K Retina iMac display? Let's find out... http://youtu.be/tgTMxB-ffjM
  13. So I own an Alienware 17 R1. I had bought this because I needed a fairly powerful laptop for school and I needed to be able finance it since money was a little bit tight. I thought this laptop would be great since my brother owns an m17x R4 which is absolutely solid, I was very wrong. Initial impressions we're that it was okay, nothing spectacular, there was a cheep plastic bezel around the monitor unlike the single glass piece on earlier alienware models, It only had like 18 different colors to choose from on the lighting unlike previous alienwares which had like full rgb and the keyboard sounded like a squeaky door when I pressed a key. I can get past those first impressions as I am looking for performance and build quality not aesthetics. The trouble began 2 months into the life of this laptop, the motherboard had died, so I had claim warranty and have dell service the laptop. So after a month i got the laptop back and it was working fine; go forward like 6 months and all of LED's went out on the laptop. So I was putting off calling tech support this time because I was in the middle of the build season for the robotics competition I participate in. (In the competition you only have 6 weeks to finance, design, fabricate, assemble, program, test, and practice with the robot so not having a laptop to program the robot with wasn't an option). So after about 2 months of robotics I went to a lan party for the WOD launch, during the waiting period me and my friends decided to play a game of league and I had the misfortune of having my motherboard die mid game, causing me to lose a game of league and to watch my friends play the new xpack. So I was really lucky that I had waited on calling dell because now the warranties end was approaching and I think that it would of died outside of warranty. So they serviced the laptop again and I got back in like 3 weeks, I had planned to use Origin PC's trade in program to purchase a new better laptop when I got mine back but unfortunately I didn't have enough cash at the time to fund another laptop purchase so I left my laptop in state where it was ready to sold or traded. After about a month I decided to use it till I have money for a new laptop. So I went about throwing in my old hard drive on top of the one I bought for it, I put them in Raid 0 and proceeded to install windows. Windows was installed, I went to install the drivers for the wireless and it failed to install, I thought that I had the wrong drivers since it refused to install. After trying different drivers I couldn't figure out what was going on so I went into the device manager to see if the adapter shows up at all, I couldn't find anything so I decided I would check inside the laptop. After undoing some screws I found an Intel Centrino Wireless N adapter instead of the Broadcom wireless ac + Bluetooth adapter that should be in there. I tried getting the drivers for the Centrino set up so I could at least get everything I need installed on the laptop but the Centrino that they randomly put in there is dead. Im going to call tech support to see if they will honour the original config of my laptop.... So all of you could probably guess what my opinion on Dell is but I want to hear what you guys think of Dell.
  14. So I've tried almost everything I could find. I've uninstalled Riva Tuner, uninstalled and reinstalled everything to do with nVidia multiple times, and even tried to search for the event in Event Viewer. Nothing works. HELP! EDIT: Ok, so it turns out that for some strange reason ROG Gamefirst was the culprit. Tried: Resarting Uninstalling / Reinstalling Running setup as admin Running executable as admin Uninstalling AI Tuner Uninstalling Riva Tuner Checking for events in Event Veiwer Installing through drivers Ending it in task manager Using older drivers Using an older setup Updating from older drivers and version Making sure that Windows isn't blocking the executable Updating motherboard bios
  15. Hey everyone, Happy new year to all. In the last year I started working for a German computer store on Weekends. My Boss wants me to build a custom water cooled PC for show in the shop. He asked me to use EK blocks because they're in in huge amounts in stock. What are your experiences with ek stuff? And wich block will work best for a 5960X or has the best performance in general? And what is your opinion on their 5,25" bay pump-resirvoir combo unit?? I thinks it is interesting. Linus may should test it. I would appreciate it! Thanks for constructive tips! Yours Christian
  16. NCIX: N/A Amazon: http://geni.us/ZcG iFixit guide link: http://bit.ly/1sZFsZ4 After using the new iMac as his daily driver for a few weeks, Linus decided it needed a bit of a hardware upgrade. But did his PC hardware experience translate over to the Mac world?
  17. This is slightly more of rant than a review but I would like to warn you guys about the support at HTC. Ok so it all started this October when I noticed the purple tint issue happening to my camera (On the HTC One). If you do not know the purple tint is caused by thermal defect in the camera meaning it will need to be replaced. So I go to HTCs tech support page and start a service ticket. The first person to contact me was actually quite helpful and left me in a good mood after talking to them. What They Said: This a a known issue We can fix it EBay is a valid place to purchase the phone Check back in 2 days to see if your P.o.P. has been processed I did by my phone off EBay because as a student I can not afford to drop 700-800 USD on a phone. Two days later I check back in: "Sir we can not find the P.o.P. please send a new one in" So I ask if Ebay is a valid place to buy the phone and they say yes and it will be repaired for free once we get the P.o.P. So two days later I check back in after resending the P.o.P., Still Ebay is OK and we can't find your P.o.P.. After that I kind of just forgot for a week or two and when the camera issues started to worsen I contacted them again hoping to see if I could get my phone fixed. Finally they found the P.o.P. Its going to be 90 dollars Ok I'm a little pissed that I had been lied to be 3 of their customer reps but I was willing to pay that much so I send the phone in. One week later they send me an email saying the phone has be processed and that the new quote on the camera repair is almost 200 USD. So this is when I start to research some local places in my area that might be able to repair the phone most of them can do it for less than 100 USD. I request my phone back from HTC. After about one week of shipping the phone comes well packed in a little box and it seems like it made it back in one piece, that was last night and it just goes downhill from there. Exhibit 1: They wiped my phone without warning, I had it backed up so it was just a little frustrated that I had to restore everything. THEY NEVER WARNED ME ONCE. So now I'm warning you back up your phones before sending them to HTC. Exhibit 2: The Battery. Last night when I got the phone it was dead and seemed like it was charging rather slowly so I left it until the morning to download my backup. This morning I get up and my phone is at 10% battery and when I look at the graph it has died twice in the last hour. I've now tried multiple chargers and none of them have any effect on the battery. So Don't use HTC customer support ever, it is one of the worst experiences I have ever had. Updates coming soon on how HTC responds to the dead battery.

  19. This thread / topic is literally as the title suggests; Experience and opinions on LASIK surgery. I myself have been a long time wearer of Glasses and have been interested / looked up LASIK and many forums around it, but the forum is smart and I am curious on the general opinion or even personal experiences or even similar experiences with like family and all. So, yeah.
  20. Hello Guys, Well this might be a re-post here. I didn't even search it in the forum. Anyway post your WEI Score. If you're running Windows 8.1, Click here to download WEI (Modded interface), but scores are as same as Original WEI.
  21. For me , i had quite a few, nothing too major or expensive , just a 5.1 sound card & a MicroSD card.. . What about you? Post Your Story down below..
  22. I've been looking at smart-watches for a while and I think the Pebble looks very good, having good functionality, good battery life and (at least I think so) a very good price. If you own one or know someone who does what have your/their experiences with it been like? (P.S. Don't link Linus' video. I've seen it but would like some more opinions.)
  23. Whoops. Read this section as 'Mobile Devices' instead of 'Mobile Gaming' ignore everything.
  24. 1. Budget & Location Location: US Budget: preferably around $500, not too comfortable if over $650, but would depend on price/performance 2. Aim Not much gaming, like League of Legend for the most part, if I game at all, which doesn’t really require much hardware to run. Light video editing, like really light. Light photoshop usage Twitch streaming, maybe, but if so, very light, I don’t really plan on doing this, but keeping the option open 3. Monitors Currently have one 1080p, but might consider a second one in the future of the same resolution 4. Peripherals Just need OS 5. Why are you upgrading? It’s actually mostly for the experience of building a pc and wanting to overclock one, that’s why I am going for the Intel G3258 AE. Though, I don’t really want to just build a pc and not be able to do much with it, so I want to have some decent hardware in it, as long my budget allows it. Some notes: * I prefer Intel/Nvidia over AMD, so I’m not going to choose an AMD CPU/GPU, just because... yeah * I am aware of other mobos, such as the H series being able to overclock G3258 with BIOS update, but I just want to stay on a platform that I know it will just work with full support (Z97) * I want to get the max performance out of the G3258, so I am not too concerned with the voltage and the adverse long term effects on the CPU, preferably OC >= 4.7 Ghz * I am aware that G3258 has no hyperthreading and only has two cores, and so Twitch streaming isn’t very optimal Important: I plan to start buying the parts during Black Friday and I am aware that prices do fluctuate a lot, even in about 1 month, but I wanted to make this post early to get some feedback and some possible changes to the system. Not very willing to change the Bitfenix Prodigy mITX case, due to price, the handles on top and because it can fit the Noctua dual tower CPU cooler. I did look at the Prodigy M mATX case, but it is more expensive and I don’t really see a difference between mATX and mITX in this build. That’s why I am going for the mITX version of the case. Unless there’s another good alternative case with handles on top and able to fit the Noctua NF D14/15. Also not very willing to change to Noctua cooler, because of their branding and performance over most AIO liquid coolers. Although, I do plan on adding the “bling bling” to this build, so how would I make a good looking system with Noctua fans? I don’t really want to go for a brown/tan color theme and I don’t really feel like painting the fans, or at least it wouldn’t be my preferred choice if there is a work around Suggestions? PSU - fully modular, has a “total silence” mode until a certain temperature threshold is reached. Don’t really know other PSU’s that could do this than the Corsair PSU’s. Oh, I am also going to use my own RAM and storage devices Yeah sorry, I am pretty stubborn about some parts and just not willing to change. I am aware that I am not giving you guys much leeway of this system Thanks! tl; dr version: Only Intel/Nvidia, no AMD please, because reasons Preferably around $500, though $650 max-ish (depends on performance) Case must have handles, and be able to fit Noctua dual towers cooler PSU must have “silent” mode and fully modular I have my own RAM and storage devices Must be Intel G3258 and Z97 mobo Thanks! (again, lol) P.S. I really want the Nvidia 970, though it's quite expensive and would really jack up the price [~$500 to ~700], so I guess I would have to wait for the alleged Nvidia 960 card, whenever that's going to come out. The 750Ti would be my like "last resort" option for a GPU. I know that it's in the "sweet spot" but it's not that powerful and quickly fall short in the coming months/year(s), right? Dunno. I just want a decent system since I don't plan on upgrading the GPU every year or so. Sorry for the essay lol EDIT: Fail, forgot to put the pcpartpicker link http://pcpartpicker.com/p/jz2Lbv
  25. The Nasty Experience: DOOM & DOOM II: Hell on Earth After the LinusTechTips and TekSyndicate HighLANder videos constantly appearing in my auto playlists, The thought of playing DOOM had slowly wiggled into the back of my squishy brain. I finally decided that it was time for me to finally experiment with this so called gem so I could formally denounce it to annoy the internet. I had played the tiniest amount of DOOM a couple of years back when I nicked DOOM 3: BFG Edition on a Steam Sale. However it became just another unplayed victim to my wallets sale casualties. My experience with it was rushed and uninvested, This was during a time when I would live in hotel rooms more than my own house leaving my midtower Desktop PC at home in the corner to cry as I played games in hotels with a silly selection of Xbox 360 games. So Quakecon 2014 happened, Well I wasn't there, I was too busy being a convict in Australia our whatever it is we do down here. Apparently a secret auditorium viewing of Doom 4 had popped its head up with fanboys hyping it as if it could cure the all worlds diseases and transcend it into a utopian state covered in chocolate. Me however not biting onto it one bit because I simply took it as a childhood nostalgia machine pumping out a sequel for future wallets to become Steam Sale victims. So finally I cleared my desk, ready to ingest the world most overhyped game with a smug content look on my rose cheeked face ready to tear this game apart… And you know what… I had a blast... New Game > Knee-Deep in the Dead > Hurt me Plenty. First I was greeted with the sound of some sort of midi heavy metal soundtrack sounding like a snes game going through a strange teenage emo phase. Then it begun, I went out running and gunning enemies with only a one handed pea shooter that dealt enough damage to 2 shot most enemies but felt like the pistol did as much damage to those demon yetis as a friendly pat on the back. On reflection, The whole start with a pea shooter is a great way to make unthreatening enemies appear threatening, A lot of the smaller enemies throughout the game act more like cannon fodder, a way to somewhat reward a player for exploring places they haven't been, as well as subtly implying they are in the right direction. *Hur Dur I'm a Demon Yeti* I’m not going to lie the shotgun is almost too much fun, I'm surprised that Zynga hasn't tried to buy it out it and made some sort of cookie clicker clone of it. Ducking left and right as I satisfyingly squee when one-shotting bunches of pixelated demon yeti into chocolate and jam floor pudding. The game is strangely quick, fun and snappy as you circle strafe around slow high damage projectiles, guns blazing and dancing with the opponents in front of you. Once you get it in your hands it feels quite natural. I found myself in the most intense firefights ducking and weaving my head around the bullets coming at me from the screen, much to my Girlfriend’s giggling enjoyment. Floor Pudding [Not Edible] Stronger enemies along with stronger weapons are slowly introduced, As you break out and rocket launcher to greet the new life forms by constantly failing everything that the First Contact classes at Starfleet have taught you. Lets face it, Are they fun to shoot? Yes... Do they scare you when they go ooga booga when you mindlessly dash through the room to pick up a free health kit? At first... Its not as much of a scary set of games its more like a fun thriller when you walk into a room and three strong opponents appear from secret doors and launch their flaming hearts at your innocent baby face. However after the first time you get screwed over from these surprise demon bashings you treat each suspicious item and path the same way you treat a every chest in Dark Souls after being eaten alive by your first mimic surprise. Know the Risk The story is flat out much more approachable than most of the multi-cutscene scripted shooters of today. Your go to mars and one of the scientists spill their coffee on the radioactive hamster or something and a portal to hell is formed. You see demons make a great fit for bad guys you don't need to create some elaborate back story about someone hitting their pet dog or anything, They just come in and want to burn you. I'm not saying all games should abandon storylines for the sole purpose of focusing on gameplay but ID Software seemed to know its strengths when it came to DOOM. Their Gameplay trumped their Story and from the looks of the way the game is set up they knew that. Quick story text blurbs don't drag on, once complete you're ready to remove more demons from the world. The Visuals get a pass by me even without considering with the age of the game, I was constantly finding myself able to look into a room and know what I had in store for me without much guess work on what pixel sprites do what, and the size and detail in some of the bigger enemies still makes you turn the corner and go nope.avi. I had great fun playing DOOM and DOOM II through to the end, If you're on the glorious PC Master Race and haven't played it, I strongly suggest buying or family sharing yourself a copy and check it out. DOOM and DOOM II get NastyJerk’s Play This Certification. [They could probably put this on the box art] What are your thoughts? Have you played it? Do you disagree? Let me know!
