  1. So, I had to perform a cmos reset by removing the battery, and now it has a boot artifact, always with the wame pattern. Also, fans sound like they're kinda fast. It doesn't go past that. I dont know what to do
  2. Hi smart people on the net. So, I have an issue with an older laptop. I am building a basic media center for my home using an older laptop mobo (Toshiba L50-a0383) I have the motherboard, RAM, HDD, CPU, Cooler, Battery, and screen. When I try to boot the system it displays Low RTC Battery - Press F2 to change Date and Time. I have no Keyboard connected to the inner port, so I cannot press F2. There is nothing that I can do and it seems that I have no input methods, other than a small button which instantly kills the power, and the on/off switch. What I have tried: - Removing the Battery and the CMOS and boot up the system (nothing) - Removing the hard drive and inserting a bootable USB in all the ports (nothing) - Connected to a network via network cable (nothing picked up) - Hold down the reset button 10+ seconds (nothing) - Hold down the on/off button 10+ seconds (nothing) - Hold down both buttons (nothing) - Replaced CMOS battery with brand new battery (nothing) - Plugged in a Microsoft std Keyboard (seems like it didn't even get power) - Plugged wireless Keyboard (no signal) tl;dr So my question is; how can I reset this Mobo to reconfigure the time/date settings or BIOS without the use of a keyboard.. Any suggestions welcome!
  3. Hello guys, here's a very high challenge for you as I've got easily 15 years of tech support yet I'm stuck on a damn phone as my computer stopped posting completely right on Jan 1st with every stores being closed, lost a full rare day of gaming, worst new year ever. The issue starts at the link below, as initialy I was trying to overclock my 8600K that appears to be the worst sample ever but it's now the least of my problems. This morning I tryed the suggestion of somebody to use 1.00v for the "PLL OC" voltage instead of the default that is higher than most boards on my MSI, which is 1.20v then I did save & exit and right there the computer wouldn't boot anymore at all, black screen, all fans spinning but the video cars that tries but barely move at all, no light on keyboard and the white led on the mono is stuck at "CPU Undetected or Fail". Usually it would had been super easy and I would have must cleared the damn CMOS but I did and nothing change. WTF how trying to boot once with 0.20v less on the PLL could possibly fry instantly my 335$ CPU?! It just makes no sense, never seen such bs since my first computer 18 years ago (-_-) I'm gonna go buy a spare CPU and board tomorrow to see by swapping hardware what will work and perhaps RMA my board already after just 5 days, to MSI and lose money over shipping, great stuff like my car battery that need to be boosted tomorrow morning so I can get to the store and to work after. www.overclock.net/t/1644977/help-i5-8600k-wont-stabilize-over-4-6ghz#post_26526912
  4. Hey I can't find my CMOS battery anywhere and I need to reset my bios, any clues as to where it is or what to do
  5. My buddy has a Lenovo Thinkpad x220, he purchased this product from ebay as a refurb. It worked fine, up until a liquid was discovered on it mainly the back and non - exposed part of the battery. He did disconnect the battery, cleaned it off, and waited until our other buddy showed up with his tools. (I was at work without my tools.) Our buddy cracked her open. no liquids or such evidence that any was present recently. Now it wont boot. Flashes 3 , 2 , 1 long. if I am not mistaken. TROUBLE SHOOTING. Ac boot - nope bat boot - nope ac/bat boot - nope We then open her up to reassure and determine any other could be problems. Forums claim it may be the motherboard. Ac block smells of a static burn metillca smell. Another Forum said the cmos/bios detachment could help fully discharge the system. I personally wasn't hands on with it being I was at work again during this 2 day process. So we do that, reassemble and re do the trials. it now BOOTS however, some boots (mostly tested plug only.) cmos error, chksum bad. The keyboard does not respond. We've reseated it many times. plugged the battery back in, still the same brick wall. I am about to use an usb wireless and wired keyboard to see if it that produces results. System specs as much as I can recollect. Windows 7 service pack 1 ( another issue is updating windows, we yet to try to refresh.) intel i 5 mobile ati gpu - low grade 8 gb ram any ideas? any other information that I can provide that will help remedy this issue? thanks in advance! Edit: we used the wired keyboard worked! now it works kind of there is beeping constantly it also changes in pace. but its mostly like b b b b b every 2 seconds. The mouse buttons left and right. And the red track button. Slowly acknowleding other keys and the mouse track pad.
  6. Running a 3930K on a MSI x79a-gd65(8d) with 16GB RAM, cooled by a NZXT Kraken x61, GPU is a MSI 680 Twinfrozer III, and a Corsair RM750i as PSU. Allright since a couple of days I have a odd curveball in my system. Overnight I shutdown the PC as allways. I made no system changes for hardware and software. But since a few days when I boot my system it gets in a loop. First a few times the post is just stuck at the first step already giving the 01 code. Then after a few times it posts further and gets stuck on 67 and then again after a few times. It finally startsup with a screen saying its going to default settings completly clearing all bios settings. Iam still in the process of eliminating causes. And sadly I can only replicate this problem once a day. Turning down my PC now doesn't make a difference, all is fine and boots up normally. So it has to be turned of for a long period of time. First i thought it might be certain bios settings like the OC so last days I ahve been going certain settings default, and for tommorow I will find out if going all the way stock settings besides XMP profile make a difference (but I start to doubt it). However since the whole boot cycle is just taking a few steps to get over it, could it be related to the CMOS battery? Havn't had much experience with that part of troubleshooting, but maybe you all have some ideas about this. Let's say the battery is getting less: normally when a battery gets less you also get less out of a full charge. So that combined with how the boot cycle goes I was thinking that maybe the battery is drained empty overnight, causing this odd boot cycle untill the battery has enough juice to boot up properly. Is this an possible scenario or is this not how it works? If yes, I could try replacing the battery might be a fix then? Other stuff I plan to trouble shoot if tommorow is same story: switching pump connection to other fan header, check cables connections (quick glance didn't reveal anything), take of AIO and test with aircooler. Havn't thought past that yet. Share ideas and thoughts. And thx for the input in advance.
  7. HI, i got this motherboard ( used ) ASUS-P5k-Premium. Everything is working fine but except whenever i restart my PC or Turn or or there is any Electricity Cut off. It says Set your CMOS on boot and in bios date automatically goes back to 2002. I have the latest bios. One thing i want to mention, this motherboard requires 8pin from psu connector but im only using 4 pins. Is that the cause? Thanks.
  8. After resetting cmos. The core multiplier wont go higher than 33, and only 6gb is detected. But in asus spdf all the ram is detected??? Asus p8p67m
  9. Hello, I'm trying to help my boss fix his gaming PC. It's a prebuilt Asus g20 desktop, and he allowed his nephew to use the PC and ended up with a Bios password. (Gotta love kids huh) I have used the CMOS jumper, shorted the battery pins, and the password prompt still appears. I have tried the date-based rescue password method, but pressing Alt + R at the password screen does nothing except enter a character into the password box ("r" i would assume). The MoBo is H170-P/G20CB/DP_MB, I don't know the Bios version since I can't load bios or boot windows. Any suggestions? Thanks
  10. Last night I powered down my PC through the desktop, that I just got done using in order to move it to my new desk area. When I plugged everything back in at my new desk area, the SSD is not recognizing the install of windows and requests me to insert a bootable drive. I have checked in the BIOS, the SSD is there, as the bootable drive. I have switched Sata Cables and ports. I've disconnected the HDD, which does not have windows on it. I have reset CMOS Not sure what else unless the data was just wiped or the SSD has gone bad.
  11. HI i have big problem with my system. Everytime i need to reset cmos battery or unplug usb devices to run motherboard. At my 5-10th try motherboard booting. And when i shut down pc, goes in to sleep mode, i can only shutdown from power supply switch. motherboard asus p6x58d-e ram 1333mhz 1600 mhz two sticks 4gb core i7 930 processor gtx 1050 ti video card. PS; i tested my psu on other pc, it runs without problem.
  12. Is it possible to set the BIOS date and time by flashing the ROM? As I understand it, flashing the CMOS resets the hardware clock to some specific date and time such as 1.1.1970 or doesn't touch it at all leaving in the time it was at but whichever the case is, it can't set the date and time right. It'd need more than just flashing the ROM. But am I wrong? For context, my employer could have the supplier flash in a custom BIOS for us with our specific settings entered by default. This is a huge deal for us because we're talking of hundreds of machines that we wouldn't have to configure ourselves at all saving a lot of time for hundreds of times over years to come. But one of the things we need is for the hardware clock to be within +/- 5 minutes from UTC. Flashing the BIOS is included in the price of the unit but other setup work isn't so if they need to do extra steps to set the time it'd affect the price leaving us potentially better off just doing it ourselves as a first-boot process. Then again, we'd have to program, test, validate, have approved and implement such a process wasting time once. So if I ask them to set the time to UTC, will I get fired?
  13. Hello, so when i was putting in a screw on the mobo i dropped by screwdriver and i noticed the lithium ion battery came loose, is there any way to fix this or am i screwed?
  14. I have an Asrock Z77 Extreme 4 motherboard and when i went to go to boot the machine it started up then immediately shut down. Now it wont boot and the postcode is reading as 4F which according to the manual is caused by 'DXE IPL is started'. After some googling it seems this is caused by a CMOS problem. My motherboard has a 'Clear CMOS' button. I tried this when powered on and when powered off and I still got the 4F code. I then tried removing the CMOS battery, waited 30 seconds, replaced it, tried to boot and im still getting the code. At this point I am at a loss. Any ideas? I read in another thread on another site that this could be caused by a corrupted bios.Specs: ASrock Z77 Extreme 4 mobo, I5-3450 cpu, Gigabyte GTX 770 4GB gpu, Coolmax ZU-800B psu, and elipta ram from an old HP desptop
  15. I have 3x 850 pros ssd's in raid 0 and a few hdd's, and i need o know asap if resetting the cmos and re-enabling raid will destroy the array and make me lose my data. the reason for the reset is i want to remove my i7 4790k's oc but i don't know if it should be on adaptive, auto or manual. answering any of the previous questions will help me heaps, thanks in advance. I am using the on board controller, NOT an external pci-e card. specs - i7 4790k - asus gene vii I cannot lose my data.
  16. Hello people. brief story: i bought a pre-built computer, and it works perfectly at the time, but i have a problem. I cant access to the BIOS because CMOS has a password damn the guys who built this pc. So, i wanted to enter BIOS to change the run sequence (to install a new OS) but i couldn't. I was looking on internet about what i could do to remove the password, and i read about clearing the CMOS. Is that correct? and if it is, how can i do it correctly? note: i tried to enter BIOS with some generic passwords, but it didn't work. so, if you can help me with some advices, i will be very grateful. i'll try to post a screenshot later, so you can create an idea of that i'm trying to do. Thanks in advance
  17. Hello! So, i am having some really weird problems with the PC of my Girlfriend. I build the thing from the ground up, partly with parts i had lying around and some new ones. Let me list all the Parts in the PC to start with: Gainward GTX 960 2GB (From my own PC after i Upgraded to a 970) AMD FX-6300 (Bought new, because i had the MB already) 8GB Kingston ValueRam (4x2GB) 1333mhz (From my own PC after i upgraded to 2 8 GB Sticks.) Asrock 980DE3/US3 (Also from my old PC after an Upgrade.) SanDisk Ultra II 120GB SSD (Bought new because i refuse to build a PC without a System SSD) A Seagate 1TB Drive, not sure what kind, but i don't think it matters here, since it's just for storage 450W Corsair VS Series PSU Antec GX500 Windowed Case I put all of the stuff together, installed windows 7, activated it, upgraded to 10 and did the initial config with all the usual stuff. Worked like a charm for a couple of weeks. Then it straight up refused to start windows. It booted fine, showed the Windows loading screen and then it went Black. Nothing happened and there was nothing on the Screen. Had to reboot and checked the Bios. The Date was set to 2014, which seemed to be a weird date to reset to, since the Board was, if i remember correctly, older than that. Changed the Battery anyway. Reset the bios to defaults, checked the time and rebooted. Seemed to work. Next reboot, same problem. Date was set to 2014 again. Checked the Battery with a voltmeter. Everything fine. The voltage in the bios was fine, too. Now the weird part, since then, it sometimes boots absolutely perfectly, other times it won't boot at all and other times it takes ages to boot. If it boots, sometimes it has the correct time, sometimes it's set to 2182 (It's always this year, though). Bios time is sometimes correct, sometimes set to 2014. It's completely random, but more often then not, there is something preventing it from booting. Takes 3-4 tries before windows loads at all and most of the time, the date will be set to 2182. Sometimes the time will be correct, though. I am all out of ideas. Last thing i can think of is to get a new MB, but I'd like to ask you guys if you can think of something first. I don't want to buy a new MB just to have the same problem again in case it isn't the board. Did a windows reset already (even installed 7 again and upgraded for a second time. All after formatting the Drive completely. So i have to assume it's a Hardware Issue. Thanks for your Time!
  18. My motherboard decided to goof and now the volts are crazy! How do you CMOS on the ASUS Z170-A???
  19. Hello guys, I have a Gigabyte X79S-UP5-Wifi and I have windows 8.1 installed on an SSD. I bought a new HDD to make a hackintosh. I wanted to put OS X on the seperate HDD. I made the boot drive and booted to it. It didn't seem to load at all. I read up on some stuff and some articles said I need to go into BIOS and "Load optimized defaults". Which I did. When I restarted the spash screen shows up and stays for a full minute and then it just goes to a flashing underscore at the top left of the screen. It wont let me into my BIOS at all or do anything. It is stuck. What I have tried: Took out CMOS battery and put back in I shorted the two prongs that say "CLR_CMOS" Remove all devices attached to computer other than keyboard and mouse I still am stuck with the same issue. Anyone have an idea on how to fix this or why loading optimized defaults would do this. Thanks, Alec
  20. Hey all, I'm currently researching new semiconductor materials for (eventual) use in computer and related technology (additional applications include solar cells, LEDs, optoelectronics, etc). However, my knowledge of computers is limited to what an entry level computer technician would know; I can build computers, work with peripherals, and explain how different parts of a computer work about 1/2 as well as Linus can, but that isn't sufficient for my work. What I want to know is, does anyone here bridge the gap on that knowledge base? Going from fundamental semiconductor knowledge to computer semiconductor technology? I really feel like I could improve my direction in research materials science if I knew how my semiconductors applied to RAM/Cache/bus speeds/processors/etc. Because my eventual goal would be to take something like the current cost prohibitive cache systems and make them as cheap as standard RAM (not entirely possible, but it can be much closer than it is). However, it'd be nice to hear someone say that it's actually worth the time. So do you think it is? If I could make a material that made cache 5-10 times cheaper, would we dump that much more memory on processors? Or is there another reason in addition to cost that it's prohibitive to just drop memory on the processor directly? I'm just as happy to hear that it's not going to make a significant improvement in tech, because that means I can move on and spend less time on the topic. But in general, I'd like to start some materials science talks here on what materials go into each computer component and why they're selected! I think that would be an awesome topic here. Cheers! 21. Hi, I recently built my first computer, and have almost had it for a month now, and I love it, but I might have done something stupid. I put my computer to sleep in windows 8 and it crashed without any error or message. It just turned itself off. When I tried to boot it up again, i heared a clicking noise( probably the stock cpu cooler from Intel. Still waiting for my water cooling kit), the fans started spinning for half a second, but then nothing happened. Is this a known problem? If so, is it easy to fix? I tried clearing the Cmos a few times, removed gpu, put the RAM in different slots, unplugged all peripherals, but still the same problem. I can't even get something on my display. The problem is, I don't have any spare computer parts just laying around, so I can't really check whats the problem. I use my computer a lot, so I hope for some quick responses -Koen van Eck Computer specs: Asus z97 Maximus VII Formula Intel Core i5-4690k @ 3,5Ghz (stock) HyperX Fury DDR3 1866Mhz 16Gb kit (2x8Gb) Asus GeForce ROG Matrix 780Ti 3Gb (stock) Samsung SSD 840 Evo 250Gb Corsair RM850, 850W Additional notes: I'm going on vacation and won't be able to do anything with my computer until i return. Any ideas on what is happening and how to fix it are still appreciated. Thanks.
  22. Hi, First, thanks in advance for reading and any help I may receive. On to my issue. I offered to look at a friends laptop for them. Their issue? They forgot the password that they set on the Hdd through the Bios. They've also forgotten their Bios password. I know.....it sounds kinda sketchy, but this is an older lady with about zero tech knowledge who is overly concerned about viruses and getting her identity stolen. She never shuts off her computer so I can see how this situation might arise. Anyway, when I first booted up the computer, which is an Acer Aspire 5532, I was met with a prompt to enter the Hdd password as expected. After entering the wrong password three times I get this: Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 082) Copyright © 1997-2000 Intel Corporation for Atheros PCIE Ehthernet Controller v2.0.0.9 (05/08/09) Check cable connection! PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE-ROM. No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key. I've found a "backdoor key" and have managed to get past the Bios Hdd password and boot into Windows where, upon reaching the desktop, the start menu is automatically up and a control panel window is open. Clicking on either of these causes more control panel windows to open. I assume this is a virus but I've never had to deal with a virus that does that sort of thing. Also, anytime it asks for a password in the Bios, it's like the Enter key is stuck and cycles between entering the password and "oh you've entered the wrong password". After reaching the desktop and seeing that wonky behavior I assume that these two issues may be connected. The Bios screen now looks like this: Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 082) Copyright © 1997-2000 Intel Corporation for Atheros PCIE Ehthernet Controller v2.0.0.9 (05/08/09) Check cable connection! PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE-ROM. I can't really find anything conclusive online about checking the cable connection and it exiting the pxe-rom. Considering that and the fact that the computer does boot I decided to format the drive and reinstall Windows 7. I insert the Win7 disc and reboot. Once I "press any key to boot from cd" you can hear the drive start reading the disk but it revs up and then down and cycles like this for about three minutes before finally moving on and starting to load Windows files. However, it gets about 90% of the way through before the computer reboot and, if left alone, loops. The cd is perfectly fine considering that I've made a digital copy of it when I got it and have installed Win7 using a usb stick since. I tried using the usb stick but it won't read it without first changing the boot priority which I currently can't do. On the desktop, in the taskbar it suggests replacing the battery. The dvd drive seems like it may be going as well. Maybe a combination of these is causes the failure to load Windows files. It's clear I need to gain access to the Bios. I know that you can get programs to run off of a usb stick or disc that'll reset the CMOS That seems like a much easier way than tearing apart the laptop. What are your thoughts on this? Also, I know that some laptops store that information in a separate place. Does anybody know if this laptop is that way? Thoughts please.
  23. Hi! As the title says, I have to clear my CMOS on my MSI Z77A-G43 but it didn't come with a jumper. I have the two pins to put the jumper on but not the jumper itself. Is there any other way to do this? Are you basically just putting metal against metal with a jumper or is there some resistance in a jumper? So, pretty much what I'm trying to ask, is it OK to use something else (what in that case?) or should I try and buy myself a jumper? Does the jumper have some special feature, like resistance or whatever? Or is it OK to use whatever conductive metal I have laying around? I just want to make sure so that I won't mess up my board more than what it already is...
  24. So my motherboard (MSI z77a-gd65) has been having issues booting that lean toward signs of a bad Overclock. So today i decided it may be the BIOS. I cleared the bios and went ahead to update it because there was a new one out, next thing i know it crashes in the process of updating and is stuck in a perpetual startup and chrash. The fans and led's turn on for a second then it crashes... i need help because clearing or switching the bios doesn't seem to help and i have already RMA'ed it once before.
  25. Hi everyone, I recently posted asking if my motherboard blew my SSD's that I had in RAID 0, but I forgot to mention also, I wanted to downlock my CPU to stock from an overclock and have the lowest volts possible. So i kept decreasing the volts slowly and slowly, until I hit a BSoD. Then I turned the volts up again and same thing happened. I did it again. BSoD again. When I cleared the CMOS on my board I lost my RAID 0 array and then after that my SSD's starting screwing up. Could that have screwed my SSD's? They were 2x OCZ Vector 128GB if that helps and my motherboard is a Gigabyte X79-UD3. Cheers :)
