  1. Ubuntu with Gnome (Ubuntu Gnome), Elementary OS, or plain ol Ubuntu. Korora if you want a non-ubuntu system.
  2. My Ubuntu install boots in 30 seconds and is completely usable after logging in immediately. My clean Windows isntall takes 2 minutes and 37 seconds to boot and then another 2 minutes to be usable at all. Installing software and maintaining it on Ubuntu is way easier than Windows. Updates are not shoved down your throat, but you still have the option for auto-update if you want. You can customize it to your heats content. It's free, and can work well on older hardware without sacrificing usability. It allows those not happy with their experience to branch off and create their own beautiful masterpiece. Natively developed games run flawlessly, and you can play a lot of Windows games without much problem. Desktop linux is not for everyone, but those are the reasons I love Linux so much.
  3. Properly clean the leather regularly and it should never go bad.
  4. If you are calling a teacher at school the school network might be pushing the connection through a monitor causing a loss of video or audio on your end. My old school blocked skype from hosting calls completely.
  5. Isn't the Helio at a much more competitive price point comapred to Qualcom's offerings? This should be taken into consideration even if the new snapdragon beats it with the 823.
  6. Looking forward to installing Kubuntu next week after finals.
  7. Nissan outed them, and they are expected to get compensation from Mitsubishi for the manipulations.
  8. Yeah XFCE looks like a good balance. I've never tried Cinnamon because i was never able to install mint on my computer due to hardware issues. (Which should be fixed by now)
  9. Installing from the terminal will grab any dependencies you need and is greatly recomended over using the .deb file because of this. sudo apt-get install steam
  10. LXDE is way to barebones for my taste. Thank you for the suggestion regardless. I have used XFCE a bit and It's very stable and clean.
  11. Look at any of the Ubuntu flavors 16.04 releases Thursday. Personally I recommend just plain Ubuntu or Ubuntu Gnome. Want something other than a Ubuntu spin? Debian, Fedora, Korora (Fedora Distro), or OpenSUSE. Only do Arch if you're not in a hurry to be productive because there is a lot to learn. Don't be afraid to dual boot for games.
  12. If you formatted the drive then yes, it's writing the drive with zeros and can take hours. If you just reinstalled then i'm not completely sure.
  13. There should a list of boot order somewhere, just move the cd drive above the hard drive and reboot with the cd in. Something along the lines of "press any key to boot from the cd" will appear and that signals that it detects a bootable cd and should boot if you press a key. Edit: I would like to mention that some laptops allow you to pick a boot device during the boot flash without fully entering bios.
  14. For lightweight rare use it should be fine though. If your browsing shady sites then sure you probably need something beefier.
  15. I used Avast for ages, but most suggest Microsoft Security Essentials + Malwarebytes.
  16. You have to burn it with the iso, assuming you have done that when you boot the pc there should be a breif flash of the bios with a key that says "boot options" select the CD and it should start the process.
  17. There is no "re-install" option as far as I am aware. You have to put a cd in with the mint iso and install it clean that way. As if installing it the first time. There should be a "Install Linux Mint" application on the live cd.
  18. Wipeing it completely clean? Just boot into a cd/ usb with linux on it and format the drive. Wanting to have a clean install of Mint ready for the person your selling it to? Use the OEM installer.
  19. Yeah, some programs just love the terminal. I read about how you should always install steam through it because of how many dependencies it has. As for expanding your partition I have no clue how to do it on linux.
  20. Try installing it purely from the command line, it should fetch the dependencies automatically, and will give you more detailed orrors if it still doesn't work. sudo apt-get install steam
  21. It's pretty much Fi (Without hangouts, although you can use hangouts.) It runs on Sprint's network with them planning to add two carrier support this year (like Fi). I've heard that Sprint's network isn't the best but it has great coverage in my area so no complaints. They currently only carry Motorola phones, but also plan to add a lot to their lineup this year. They have had time to really work out a lot of kinks in their service. RW is cheaper than Fi, but Fi has dual carrier and Nexus phones.
  22. It's pretty much Google's version of Republic Wireless. As a Republic Wireless customer I can tell you that getting a refund on your data is the best thing ever. (My bill is 14$ a month) They beat RW to the two carrier punch though, but I look forward to seeing both evolve.
  23. He wants the proprietary drivers though, being unhappy with its performance with the included driver.
  24. Straight from askubuntu on .run files. Sorry Night Theme users, I have no clue how to change the background color.
