  1. I’m back!!

So I said in a status update a while ago I was gonna downsize my desktop to a laptop...I may have spent all that laptop money on a Nintendo Switch instead. I had never played Breath of the Wild before, and a couple weeks back I was at a friends house and they let me try it out. I loved it so much I decided to get a Switch, but ran out of money so now I’ve gotta wait a couple weeks before getting BOTW. I'm excited to play it though!

Nice! Also, since you bought it at around this time, this is a new hardware revision of the Switch--the Tegra X1 SoC inside was die-shrunk, giving you longer battery life.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is also really nice.

    3. star_pilot475

Yep, I knew about that hardware revision. I made sure I got the red box. I was planning on Mario Kart, Mario Odyssey and Super Smash Bros all down the line. But Zelda must come first! ?

  2. I am back for a brief moment with big news...

I have to sell my rig

my GPU is leaving me Thursday and the rest of it, I don’t know yet.

many will despise me but I must get something more portable...

but on another note, I’m building a pc for a friend. He’s buying my GPU and paring it with a Ryzen 5 2600. This is his first build in like 10 years. He doesn’t really know what he’s doing anymore so most likely I’ll have to assemble the whole thing. This will be my first real build! Of course, it is somebody else's rig to be jealous of but whatever.

edit: when I came back today, I had 158 notifs...

  3. Well, I wasn’t very active on the forums last week because, well, my week (and the rest of this month) is hectic for me.

most likely you won’t see me very active for the rest of the month, but beginning November, things should calm down a bit.

  4. So I tried that cable management that people talk about...

I mean, for what you had to work with, it's actually not bad

Just to be an arse though... Personally whenever i'm doing cable runs or cable managing things, I always try get the tie wrap ends in the same orientation/facing the same way..... Honestly makes a difference - also cut the ends with a Stanley knife to get them flush

Or alternatively have better things to do and not care

put your extra cables in unused 5.25 bays if you have them.

  5. My first "real" setup may be coming soon (couple of weeks yet, probably, also assuming no unexpected bills come up). What I mean by real is I won’t have to sit on the floor in front of my television when I want to game. If I remember, I’ll take pics of it when I get it all together. But for now, here’s stock pics of the items I’ve picked out.

      star_pilot475

Yeah I know, it’s cheap though and I can’t afford more without sacrificing a lot on the monitor. It got decent reviews, so if it holds up for 6 months, that’s good enough for me.

  6. That i5 2400 system I was eyeing yesterday is now off Craigslist...

    I missed my opportunity.

on a side note, just browsing through PCPP, I’ve found that I really like the look of the Silverstone Lucid LD03 for some reason. If I ever had the money to do a high end mini-Itx build, I’d probably use that case.
pic of it for those who don’t know what case I’m talking about

  7. I'm kind of tempted to buy this i5 2400 system on my local Craigslist...it supposedly "needs work" (stuck in some sort of boot hell) but it’s an issue I’ve had before and know how to fix. The whole system is only $50. According to UserBenchmark (have they fixed themselves yet?) an i5 2400 would deliver about 50% more performance. Plus, I would love to experiment with Hackintosh and this could actually do that.

      they haven't

but the difference is there, go look real benchmarks

    2. star_pilot475

      star_pilot475

UserBenchmark needs to get themselves together

CPU-z benchmark shows a big difference

      i5 2400: 1288 single thread, 4056 multi thread

my current cpu (Athlon II X4 650):  646 single (oof) 2433 multi

It’s already running Linux mint, as windows 10 was too slow (even 7 was laggy too). I hadn’t thought about folding. Maybe I’ll try that!

  9. I was thinking of entering into ROG Rig Reboot but nah. My pc can run Windows and a few games, so I guess there’s no real need because I’m 100% sure somebody has something worse.

unrelated question: I’ve been looking at an AOC 22V2H monitor. Reviews seem good but does anybody have any experience with it?

@WikiForce it definitely is a bottleneck. The cpu is below minimum spec for Minecraft, whereas the GPU is above recommended spec. I may upgrade soon to a Phenom II X6 as they are supported by my motherboard but we'll see.

  10. Got my new iPhone 11 on Friday. It’s pretty fast. I like it a lot. Big upgrade from my SE.

  11. I’m looking for a cheap laptop for a friend. He wants it to be able to run Minecraft, be able to play YouTube videos, and other web browsing sort of stuff. Ideally he'd like it to be under $250. Any ideas?

FYI, he doesn’t want a Chromebook though.

edit: he also doesn’t mind used

  13. I was looking around on eBay yesterday, and I found that I can upgrade my system to a mini-itx i5 3470 based system for less than $200. I’d like to run MacOS really badly, and this could be my foot in the door, although I can’t decide because for $100 more I could have a decent MacBook Air or I could buy a decent Hackintosh-able laptop. Any opinions?

  14. I might finally be able to get a desk and monitor for my setup...

  15. Finally fixed the issue of my pc sounding like it’s gonna explode. I swapped the exhaust fan and fan on the stock cpu cooler. I can barely hear it now. To improve airflow, I'm leaning towards getting the Thermaltake H17. Not a excellent case for overall airflow, but anything is better than what I have.

Lol, unfortunately just replacing one fan for now. Hopefully soon the case and cpu cooler though!

  17. I have a budget of $150 for some new tech, what should I get?

I would upgrade my PCs with this, but to me it’s not worth it, so something other than that...

      Origami Cactus

You mean more tech less pc?

Then choose depending on your needs:

1)Something that is needed/nice to have for your hobby

      2) New headphones with bluetooth

      3)Battery bank

      4)Wireless speaker

5)Philips hue lighting for your house

      6)External SSD

      7) 1000lumen rechargable flashlight

      8 10TB external HDD.

Those are some good ideas! I especially like the headphones idea...but also the external ssd. Thanks @Origami Cactus

  18. So one of my parents friends needed their pc fixed (it wasn’t turning on), I told them I could take a look. I pop open the side panel and there’s just a thick layer of dust over everything. I took it apart, cleaned out the dust and the realized there was no exhaust fan. It was a Lenovo pre-built. How do you sell a pc without an exhaust fan? The only fan in the whole system was the CPU cooler that had like an 80mm fan on it! Turns out front panel connectors had come slightly undone, so I was able to get it working, but it’s just so dumb that a large company like Lenovo would do that.

System specs for the Lenovo weren’t so great, so I’m sure it wouldn’t have overheated but still...???

  19. Is a $150 Chromebook worth it?

      star_pilot475

@Silentprototipe It’s not really worth it for me to buy used. I just saw it pop up on in my email, and was like hey that could be nice. Just a quick thought I had. Thanks for the reply!

  20. I watched the Apple Special Event this afternoon. Settled on an iPhone 11. I’m gonna order it up at 8 AM EST Friday.

  21. My parents have offered to buy me a new phone, as my current iPhone SE is dropping calls and texts like crazy lately. It’s not the carrier's fault (I’m with Verizon), the phone is just getting old and it’s just plain too small for me anymore as well. Waiting until Tuesday for Apple's Special Event and then I’ll decide from there.  I’m really hoping they release a new equivalent to the current XR, as that’s what I’ll most likely opt for.

I certainly hope so, as I can’t justify the extra $300-$450 over flagship models.

  22. Quick question-

I was looking at building a low powered pc for browsing the web, movies and stuff like that. When you get a stupor tiny case that has no room for a power supply, how are you supposed to power any of your components?

Alright just looked around. They seem to be a little janky and out of my area of expertise. The motherboard I was looking at requires so little power (a single 2 pin) that I didn’t know if it would be so great anyway. Thanks for the help Luke!

Might be worth just buying a tiny PC somebody else has made like a Rasberry Pi.

  23. Gonna try DDU-ing to fix my being stuck at 1366 by 768. Man, I hope it works, I’m so tired of not being able to run at 1080p.

  24. Psst...wanna see my triple monitor setup?
    I was bored on PCPP

everything is the most expensive it can be (with that CPU/mobo combo that is) I love that those monitors are only 76hz. I’m also missing WiFi adapter but I didn’t have enough pcie x1 slots. Also, I had to use to Windows 10 Pro (it’s not the most expensive but it supports the 256gb of ram this system has)
