I had a friend that bought a Dell computer to try and game on. <- A fail in it's self... And after installing Battlefield he realized it wasn't ever going to play with acceptable frame rates. So he rang me up asking 'what's wrong with my computer? it wont run the game'. I just suggested to buy a new graphics card, common practice right?, a couple days passed by before he rang again and asked 'WTF, you don't know what you're talking about... it still will not play'. I went over to investigate. He had bought a GTX 670! (Still using the garbage retail computer, dual core, 2 gigs of ram) Not making any remark to the bottlenecked computer I looked at the IO shield, he was still using the integrated graphics... /facepalm He is still using VGA cables on a 1080p monitor too.

I also made the mistake to start doing computer stuff for my friends and family. Everyone i've ever helped now thinks that i'm their personal support guy for everything. My top 5:

Friend bought a SSD and installed it (he's not that of a noob). Still asked me why it wasn't reading with 450MB/s as promised, so i asked him if he used the fast sata-port on his board (labeled blue). He told me that he used the blue one, so i drove over to him, just to see that be had his HDD in the fast port and his SSD in the slow one.

My mother told me that she wants a new computer, so i asked her if i should build her one. She said no and went to "Saturn" (like best-buy but in germany) and got a complete system there. She payed about 800$ for a system with an i3, a gtx 540, 4 gigs of ram and 500 gigs of harddrive space....

A friend of mine made a steam account with a fake e-mail-adress. After buying 3 games with his pay-pal-account for ~120$ he restarted his computer, just to realize that he couldn't play the games because his mail was fake and he couldn't get into his steam-account anymore.

After i built a computer for a friend of mine, he started complaining about the system bluescreening all the time. While checking his rig, i realized that he had removed the cpu-cooler (out of curiousity) and cleaned off the thermal paste because he thought it was dirty. So obviously his cpu got too hot and made his pc crash every time he booted up. Because he tried to boot up his system uncountable times, his 300$ i7 was broken too. Good job on that.

My ex-girlfriend got a macbook pro. She turned it on for the first time and played around a while, after about 10 minutes she asked me where the Internet Explorer is because she wanted to surf the interwebz. I lol'd.

I was working in a PC repair shop and a elderly guy comes to me and tells me he has a problem with his notebook. He doesn't have no Google on his computer and he asks me if I could install google on his NB. I was holding back not to break out in tears. But then I was thinking for a bit and I put in the browser "google as a home page" . So after that every time he opens his browser the first thing that he sees is google. Problem solved. Man that guy was happy !

The best one I've experienced is when people call any form of internet "wifi"

My little brother used to think that the more data you store on an HDD, the heavier the component gets. He also thought that if you pivot the monitor clockwise during a transfer of files or an installation, it would go faster because the gravity would help the loading bar fill faster...^^

An electrician tried to convince my Grandmother that the reason why her lights would sometimes flicker in her house was because she lived on a hill and the electricity sometimes had a hard time travelling up the hill. Some people.
Once I had to convince the teacher on my 10th grade IT class that in order for her computer to show up on the projector she had to actually plug it in via VGA cable. She was under the impression that she had to press a function key on her keyboard and it would automatically show up. You can say that class was an easy A for me >_>
My parents are constantly wondering why the printer won't print their documents, they can understand that it has to be on.
Some kid at school asked me how to transfer photos from their iPhone to their computer. Id go through the steps with them and they would always say "it's not working you obviously don't know what your doing" so i ask them just for giggles if their phone was actually turn on. It wasn't
I've encountered so many situations of uneducated people but i just can't remember them.

I have a non-techie friend who boasts of his "upgraded" computer. He said it's very fast now because he added 3TB of storage.

I've put the fan speed to 45% and the temps wen't down to 46°C. Once i get some high quality fans i'll report back

This actually made me laugh a little bit.

EVGA 750ti FTW version is clocked out of the box (really well, might I add), has the ACX cooler (which is great), and is just above your budget (unfortunately) (but if you stretch 20 bucks... )
If stretching is no where to be found, the EVGA 750ti SC version is clocked very close to the FTW version, and is again, awesome.
 
Both support G-Sync... Cause... Why not?
