i know this is a very old topic but i'm gonna leave a reply to help others who stumble onto this. In Terraria, if you disable frame-skip, the game should run at the refresh rate of your screen. It may speed up the physics of the game though.

i ended up going with the i5. I just tried both because I had a few hours spare time one weekend and after bench marking, the single core performance of the i5 was much better which seemed more important in 95% of games these days.

Mobos and CPUs will be cheaper 1-2 years after new generation launches, mainly because people are waiting for new gen to buy older gen and there's no point for vendors to do major price drops to clear warehouses. RAM pricing is oddity in there, it might drop or not.

Overall, you are end of the line with that combo. Like said before, futureproofing is nonsense. The way you should look at it, is when to upgrade and how easy/cheap it will be when you decide to do it. In your current situation, you can go for i7 and overclock it. That gives some more room, maybe year longer than i5 would.

no one knows. it's fine today, but next year we could see a massive leap in tech that could make all current hardware obselete, with RTX, 7nm there's no knowing what could happen even a few months from now.

In my personal experience, most motherboard issues have come down to a bent cpu pin or broken capacitor. Have you checked the capacitors aren't bulging and that there are no bent pins? Also, could the cpu be overheating? Is your cooler plugged in and working and dealing with the heat? Another idea is to see if you can try borrowing someone else's power supply as you might've gotten unlucky with a bad power supply.
