He doesn't need a Z series board. He doesn't intend to overclock, so there goes one of the defining features of the chipset.
As he stated, he got the chip for free. So, he's not wasting anything. Not only that, you still get access to the 6 cores and 12 threads, as well as the base clock, which is still perfectly usable. You're basically saying that the i7 - 8700 is a waste of a product.

You'll be perfectly fine with a B360 motherboard, and honestly since we're on the end of the socket cycle, and you're on a budget, it makes the most sense.
Just grab the one you like the look of the most, and enjoy! It'll be an awesome experience.
Don't listen to everyone saying you need a Z series board.

Now, if you plan to delid and LM and overclock, that changes things. A Z series motherboard, is of course, necessary. That's when spending money now might be a waste.
Honestly I'd wait for Black Friday, and build then if that's your route. No point in spending money twice.

So to reiterate, I *understand* that the ideal would be a Z370 however I want to get going on the cheap. I have an old Noctua NH-D14 that I snagged from kijiji for $20 that I plan to use as cooling. Please keep in mind the LOWER THE COST THE BETTER. Thank you Princess Cadence for the info! Second note:  if/when Iget the money I WILL upgrade to a z370/z390 but to get up and running ASAP and on the cheap I need to cut corners for now

An 8086K is really a pre-binned 8700K in that it's a specially-selected 8700K. It would be a waste to put this king of a CPU in anything other than a Z370.

Congrats on winning the 8086K sweepstake!

Obviously it works, why wouldn't it work? get the cheapest b360 since h310 usually cheaps too much on VRMs and that will handicap your boosts other than that all fine.

Don't forget you need at least a decent aftermarket cooler as well.

Is there much price difference between say a reasonable B360 and a low end Z370? On that note, I'm currently running a 8086k on the Asrock Z370 Pro4, which is usually one of the cheapest mobos for it. It doesn't look that much different in price compared to B360 boards. On mine, with a decent air cooler, I can overclock all cores to 5.1, and a delid+LM got me to 5.2. After I did that for benching, I reset it to stock clocks which is how I run it now. File it under nice problem to have. Low end Z370 in case you want to overclock some day, otherwise it is still no slouch with a non-OC board.
