Not sure if it has been posted before or not but i went around a friends house and she was using a 3g dongle.
So naturally i asked if she had broadband...
    her: yes
me: Do you not have wireless then?
her: yeah but we dont know the code.

so after finding the wireless router i promptly picked it up and turned it upside down and read the code from the sticker. none the less she was rather happy about having faster internet on her laptop.

On a different note people have been saying about older people not grasping how technology works, my nan is the opposite, she isnt scared (with instruction) to findle with the inards of a PC. And i am so happy both my parents know how to email and basically use a computer so i only get the more techincal questions.

Do you have a slimmer gpu? Or onboard gfx you can use with the sound card? To prove the issue. Replace or remove your gpu and and put the sound card in. If this fixes the issue then you know youre heading in the right direction.
