Everyone uses GPU and graphics card interchangeably though and I've never seen it not be clear from the context which was meant. And that's just when it matters, which it usually doesn't
well i only said that because it does matter in this case. the person sees in software that they have a XXXX as gpu. so they think it is a graphics card since everybody uses those terms interchangeably.

My friend said he needed to upgrade his GPU from his old GPU which he swore he had in his PC. I opened it up and guess what? He didn't have a GPU.
I just noticed I used "GPU" a lot in that post
terminology is pretty important in that matter. a gpu is a graphics processing unit, wich isn't necessarily a dedicated graphics CARD. integrated gpus are still gpus.

i'd really like to win a Kova. the mousewheel on my Gladius broke

I'm a bit disappointed that there's no strawpoll for us to vote who we think will win.
so i created one ^^
feel free to vote!

looks awesome! really like how this turned out. the red cables really bring it together, nice work man!
thanks again man ^^

what fan controler is that? i need one with red LEDs!!!
it's a xilence one. cheap, but good for it's price. good luck finding one. i'm afraid they are discontinued.

Best air cooled PC i've seen in a while. Only thing I would change is the twist tie on the GPU cables, feels out of place. But I love how even the SSD's and periferals match. Even your lamp matches!
wow, that's a big compliment ^^ thanks buddy. i'll be removing the twist ties later on. they are there so the cables are fixed in this position for a while.
and hopefully stay that way afterwards.

Update
So here is the final update.
First of all, i created a little timeline recap of how my system evolved.
If you are interested, you can look at it here:

And now, the final pictures:
Thanks for following this thread

Wow that really makes a huge difference. You now have a truly custom GPU.
thanks mate ^^

Wait, did you paint the PCB with the cooler still attached to it? Seems pretty risky to me. It looks awesome tough! I'm on my phone right now, definitely look at the pics again when i get home to get a better look [emoji14]
i did. but i masked the risky areas and i trained beforehand on the old gt9600 i mentioned earlier. i was confident enough in my steady hand ^^

Update
hi folks, the cable extension i needed has arrived and i painted the edge of the pcb. this part was some pretty delicate work, but i'm happy with the result.
here are some pictures.
i will post the final pictures tomorrow, when the paint is dry and i have some daylight to take the pictures.

Very nice red/black Air 540! Should look really good when you finish all the final touches.
Looks on point mate. Always feels so satisfying when you paint computer parts, because it's more than just picking the right colors...
thank you guys ^^ i appreciate it.
Well currently it's sitting on my shelf as an ornament as I have a 980ti in my rig now.
lol, well yeah. then there's no more need i guess ^^

I had considered painting my 290 Tri-X a while back as well. Never did get around to it though.
i can encourage you. it went smoothly. i didn't even sand the surface or prime it. as long as you're gonna spray it a darker shade than before, it's straight forward.

Nice. Hope to see updates, Followed!
Remember to follow your own topics.
thanks ^^
and oh yeah, thanks

Hi guys
After over a year of ownership, i finally came around to paint my Sapphire R9 290X Tri-X.
Thanks to @RollinLower, i remembered to take a few pictures with my shotty phone camera, so that i can make this work log.
So let's get started.
The first thing i had to do, was completely take apart my graphics card.
These are the individual parts. missing the plastic shroud, as it's already out for painting.
Here is what the painted shroud looked like on it's own. the paint is still wet.
In the meantime, i used an old OEM 9600GT that i had lying around.
coinincidentally, also a red one
and now, to make up for the lack of documentation pictures, here's some pictures of the finished work.
the work is not actually finished tho, as i'm going to replace the pcie-e cables with red extensions (like the ATX cable) and will most likely also paint along the sides of the graphics card's pcb. or in other words: make the yellow line from the cut pcb edge red.
feel free to let me know what you think and stay tuned to this thread if you want the see the two other changes that i described above.
have a nice day

i'll deliver in the next few days. i'm gonna do all the swapping again for you guys.
but please, when i go through the hassle to do it all over and document it, don't go "fake!" on me. as i said before, i don't really know how i could prove it fake-proof. i guess screenshots and maybe a few photos have to do the job.
btw: my cpu isn't oc'd by BCLK anymore, information in my profile was old. i updated it. i have it oc'd just by mult to 3.7GHz since a few months.
and yeah, i understand why you can't believe me, i couldn't believe it myself at first.
-
okay, i ask again, how can i prove it for you guys? i mean, i could take screenshots and photos of the card in the slot but i guess that still won't satisfy some of you.
it has nothing to do with the cooling. the card won't throttle in the upper slot and also not in the lower.
-
so, what would you like me to provide to prove this? pictures of what?
btw: i'm very disappointed about you guys deeming me a liar and i'm not highly keen on doing those swaps all over again just to silence you.
what about "if this is true..." responses?
-
guys... i've got a strange anomaly to talk about...
i wanted to test the performance impact when switching from PCIe3.0x16 to x8 on my R9 290X.
to do so, i placed the card in my lower slot, wich is only x8. i only changed that, clocks, settings even psu connection stayed the same.
well, it turned out that it really had quite the impact... but here it comes: POSITIVE impact!
i used valley to benchmark the results and got around 54 fps with my settings at x16. when using x8 i got 68 fps!i also tested 3D Mark 11 wich gave me 500 gpu-points more on x8
my mind is blown and i have no idea what is reality anymore. i tested both multiple times, with switching the slot between each run, watching temps and volts. nothing changed, except more fps...
any opinions on that? similar experiences?my specs can be found below or in my profile

9.5/10. Why a non-k processor?
From profile.
it was a cost compromise. wich i didn't regret and lo and behold, i am actually able to overclock this badass quite a bit ^^
i give yours a 8.5/10
i think it's a great system and i'd give myself around the same score but as you can see, i even gave the one prior to you "only" 9.5 ^^
-
Really nice 2012-2013 build but I never recommend dual GPU on same PCB. I'm not into Asrock. You could got 1866mhz ram for better performance. Really solid build I give 9.0 considering it's a year or so build.
9.5/10 beastmode
i'd give the last 0,5 points for looks
sidenote: knock that autoplaying song off your website
-
great to see zotac beeing back to play with the big guys ^^
-
Nice build, Although I don't see why you'd go for 1x8gb. 8/10
Specs in sig.
what a dream pc ^^ even the case and peripherals are absolutely my taste.
i give you 9.5/10

i'm currently using my backup mouse, a TTesports Saphira with a damaged mousewheel. my keyboard is a corsair K50 that is way past it's best years and a shoddy ozone strato headset. so i could really use some help from Feenix.
