I planned on getting the cpu/mobo/ram/psu, but wife guilted/convinced me to put more effort in the final build not to hurry and have a running system..She wants me to make this a great show piece when done

I got so frustrated with one of my computers I was using as a webserver, I drop kicked it...It started to work, and never had any issues afterwards..

Most FPS shooters...Same game to me, just different graphics..

Just take it off the tabs *bend the tabs straight. go to local glass shop, get them to cut a replica

The 970 still performs exactly how benchmarks describe it performing, nothing's changed just because of these "VRAM issues".
 
There are a very small # of 290x's that are better, so if you do need a new card, either get a 290x Lightning or a 970 G1.  You'll be happy with either choice.
