  1. Budget (including currency): listed per part.

    Country: Austria

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: CAD, blender, lil bit VR, mainly office use,

maybe they will get used as VM hosts in the beginning of 2022 - do I have to take something special in account for that? (software is not yet defined)

    Part List:

German (shops in my region): https://geizhals.at/?cat=WL-2061933

English (uk based, false currency for me): https://skinflint.co.uk/?cat=WL-2061933

    Fixed parts:

    i9 10850k

    Samsung 980 500GB Evo

GTX 970 (from old mining setup)

ASRock Z590 Extrem (not bought yet, I need at least 2.5Gbit and a secound 1Gbit port)

    Open for debate:

RAM (need 16GB per machine, need advice which frequency to pick)

CASE (something sleek looking, will be used in an office, USB 3.0 + audio in the front - more USB = better, budget about 100€, multiple GPU support - for future VM host usage, no 3.5" HDDs, fans will be exchanged with noctua, no glas panel, I like the design of Fractal define 7 compact

PSU Corsair RM850 (Budget: 140€, keep multiple GPUs in mind, 80Plus Gold is a must have, pls fully modular)

I am also building an unraid box with the same hardware (excluding GPU and case and maybe more RAM).

If would really appreciate some tips regarding RAM and case.

  2. I can't say anything about signal quality, I do not know if HDMI will work after soldering it to an breakout board. Which resolution and refreshrate are you planning to use?

If I am interpreting it right, you want to power your monitor over the USB C Cable, which does not make a lot of sense, because your Laptop probably can't deliver that kind of power. (At least I never heard about a Laptop which can output Power with PD)
EDIT (I just read somewhere that some/most Laptops can use their PD port to charge other things with PD):
powering your Monitor with your Laptop would need something like: https://www.tindie.com/products/oxplot/stusb4500-compact-breakout/

The other way around, charging your Laptop with your monitor makes more sense (at least for me) you would need a PD Module in the Monitor, which can negotiate with you Laptop how much power the laptop needs. There is a big Problem there, your laptop probably needs a powerbrick with more than 100W (max for USB-C, Dell has some USB-C power adapters with 130W, but with that they are stretching the USB-C spec a little.) so it won't charge with that solution. (I think your Laptop needs 180W)

    EDIT2:

What I did not think through, is that in any way, you have to split your cable at your laptop to get the HDMI out.
What you could do to eliminate that, you can use a standard USB C to HDMI adapter t your Monitor and somehow get USB PD working over that

  3. A few days ago I installed Blender 2.8.1 and it worked perfectly for ~5 minutes then it crashed with (The crash is always the same):grafik.png.098436afef65a21a096f0932c8564fd8.png

Since then when I start Blender that Error pops up.

After reinstalling the driver it worked again, until it crashed again.

Reinstalling the driver did not work that time. (reinstall, restart, ..)

Today blender worked again out of nowhere, and it worked for about 8 hours (rendering an image is not a Problem) (After blender started to work again I installed 2 extra GTX 970 for better rendering performance)

I have no idea what to do next, atm I am using a fresh win 10 install and it worked the last 2 hours, but thats not optimal.

    My Specs.:

    8700K @4,8Ghz

    32GB 3600Mhz

    SSD 970 2x1TB

    1070 Ti Zotac mini

    2 x 970 Zotac mini

600 Watt bequiet (I will upgrade that soon , atm my System draws at full blender rendering load ~580 - 596 Watts, never saw anything above 596W )

    newest Win 10

    Temperatures are all below 70°C

My System is stable in Prime and in 3D Mark

  4. According to that post here in the ltt forum https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/824111-max-power-a-pci-e-8-pin-can-deliver-from-the-psu/

the 8 Pin can handle about 325 Watts (molex specification) (~9A per wire , I thought I saw that 8 Pin connector with 13A limit on an Molex Datasheet but can't find that atm)

If you go with the ATX specification its just 150W (~4,2A per wire)

    Some not interesting rambling:

    Spoiler

lets round 211W up and use 250Watts.

250W is 100W out of spec, BUT the pcie slot should be delivering about 75 or less, lets assume it only delivers 50W.

--> thats only 50 over spec which is "only" 33% which is like "nothing" at least not for cables that could do a lot more in theory)

Are the contacts in the connector corroded or look different than other contacts?

  5. Some rambling thoughts about that topis:

    Spoiler

I think the upper limit on an really good water cooled Vega 64 is about 400 Watts (correct me if I am wrong)

lets ignore the power supply over the pcie connector.

    400Watts @12V are about  34A

    A 8 pin connector has 3 12V and 3 ground wires.

    thats roughly 12A per cable.

A 18AWG wire floating in air I can easily run 16A over it (AWG ratings) .

That means the cable is completely fine the only problem is the connector and even the connector should be "fine" for that kind of load, slightly (more than double with 400W) out of spec.

After seeing the video from der8auer I never thought that a connector can fail like that at a load like that.

    Was your card Watercooled?

  6. Which brand was that cable?

Aren't those cables usually completely "overkill" (not overkill but with a lot of headroom) aslong as you do not overclock with liquid nitrogen?

I've just skipped through the video of der8auer to mark the important timestamps, but I saw it a few month ago and it suggests that the cable should not be the problem, maybe the connector wos corroded beforehand?

He made the video with an 2080ti Strix with two 8 Pin Connectors

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRVSGFjKf4E

1:02 Quick look at the pcie cables/connectors

9:48 Cables running at speck power @30°C cable temperatur (which is totally normal even in household wiring when running in the upper speck limits)

12:15 Only 2 12V cables and 2(more than two but i am not sur how many) ground wires remaining still no major problems

12:40 2 12V cables and 4 ground wires (can't disconnect more than 4 more information in the video, not an cable problem!)

  7. Both X470 AsrockRack Motherboards can use their x16 as 4x4 Bifurcation Slots

    PCIe 3.0 x 16PCIE6: Gen3 x16 link (splittable in x4/4/4/4); auto switch to x8 link when PCIE4 is occupied.PCIE4: Gen3 x8 link

(user manual, second page not counting the index pages user manual | also states that on the page under specifications)

    X470D4U2-2T (With double 10Gbit Lan)

    X470D4U

Asrock also has a compatibility list for its quad m2 card, but that list is missing a lot of Asrock Motherboards (already saw X470 and X570 boards working with 4x4).

I was in contact with their support in November and they couldn't give another list with ALL compatible Motherboards  -_-

You can run a dedicated GPU from another PCIe Slot (over the Chipset) or use an m2 to PCIe adapter if you really need a GPU with an microATX Board.

Atm I have an EK Hardtube kit in my system and I want to upgrade my CPU Block to an Monoblock for aesthetics.

I only found one from Bitspower.

They state on their website that that one is compatible, has someone already tried this?

I would prefer a monoblock from EK but I couldn't find one.

Can anyone suggest a other monoblock fro that motherboard?

  9. Yep, because everytime I see someone ask wheter he should use CAT5e or something better (Or when I see  people who say that you should use CAT6A if you can afford it)

I think that Cat6a or even Cat 7 is cheaper then CAT5e.

Now my Question is, is that phenomen of the better cable being nearly the same price or even cheaper only in Europe or anywhere else too?

And I do not see 100m of installation cable as bulk because you actually need a lot more for networking for a whole home if you want at least two ports in several rooms

  10. After reading the Post Home Networking i've asked myself what the pricing for different CAT cables is in your place?

(I am talking about installation cables)

Prices are for 100m of cable and without Tax (We have 20%)

    Cat 5e                     27.52€      30.19 USD

    Cat 6                       27.15€      29.78 USD

    Cat 6a                     26.00€      28.52 USD

    Cat7                        27.50€      30.17 USD

    Cat7a    1200Mhz   40.00€      43.88 USD

    Cat7a    1500Mhz   44.86€      49.81 USD

  11. I ve to buy 2 (ore one ultrawide) to new monitors for work (mostly programming) I can also use them for private stuff outside of working hours.

    When I am working I will use my Laptop (7700 HQ | 1060 6GB | 16GB) or Remotedesktop with my (8700K | 1070ti | 32GB) machine, depending on the workload.

A few days ago (At that time I did not know that I would have to buy new monitors) I saw the Samsung Space Monitor S27R750Q, 27" and I thought it has nice image quality. (I can get it for 250€ = 270$)

Are there other monitors with similar Specs and price which you can recommed?

    Should I get one ultrawide 1440p instead of 2 27" 1440p?

Budget 500 to 600€ (Everything more than that I ve to pay myself)

  12. I am searching for an TV:

    • 65"
    • 4K
    • apple air play would be cool

the only important thing is a very good image quality at an price point of 600 to 800€.

My favourite Brands would be Samsung or LG.
