They prevent splashing or water noises when the fluid enters from the top of the res.

It was most likely a VoIP phone which uses ethernet. It should work perfectly with your router.

I've got my money back, as already said. It was all brought from same guy... he assured me it worked fine and had none of the problems I've had... obviously not true but can't complain.

"using unauthorized hardware peripheral devices"    What??  I don't need anyone's permision to plug whatever I want to my PC.

I must say this is looking very nice! I'm liking it's simplicty compared to other mods!

Adding a switch will not slow down the network in the slightest unless the switch is performing erratically.
 
Modem > Router > Switch > hosts   is how the internet should flow.
