[DEBUNKED] Windows 10 updates can disable pirated games and unauthorized hardware

The new EULA says this yes but it does not apply to Windows 10 itself, only first party apps from Microsoft.

Section 7.b is what you're looking for.

If you scroll down to the "Covered Services" list you can clearly see that Windows 10 is not listed only a lot of first party Microsoft apps.

Microsoft’s new Service Terms that went in effect on the 1st of August state the technology giant can prevent you from playing counterfeit games or use unauthorized hardware. The terms are valid for everyone using Microsoft services such as Office 365, Outlook.com, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive, Bing and MSN. Also software using a Microsoft account is covered by the terms meaning the terms also affect most Windows 10 users. Although Microsoft’s latest OS can be used without a Microsoft account the majority of users will nevertheless use it with an account from the Redmond company. 

The terms now explicitly state Microsoft can release updates that could have some serious consequences. In the terms the company states it might, “download software updates or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorized hardware peripheral devices.”

 

It’s unclear what the company means with unauthorized hardware peripheral devices, it could be that the company will disable e.g. Xbox controllers that are not certified by Microsoft. Counterfeit games is more clear, this is pirated software.

 

With the release of Windows 10 there has also been a lot of buzz regarding the privacy settings of the operating system. The express settings, which are used by default when installing the operating system, contain some settings that by some users are considered as privacy concerns, such as the use of Cortana, automatic updates, the use of a Microsoft account and the gathering of telemetry and privacy by Microsoft.

Fuck that. Unless they lift this ban, then i will not upgrade to Windows 10, even though i'm desperate.

So will this effect my cheap rock candy controller that I renamed it as a Xbox Microsoft Controller for Windows in the registry? I hope not. Don't want to pay more for their overpriced stuff.

I doubt that Microsoft will want to just be that good guy. They probably are looking for some incentives or a cut from companies in order for Microsoft to do something. I can understand them doing their own software, but for them to police every software that is out there sounds ridiculous, unless they are making money off of that. If this did take into effect, would that mean less DRMs (which would be really really nice)? Don't really care if they shut down my pirated software, it's not going to give me any incentive to buy the software anyway. Will just head to the free alternatives, like GIMP, OpenOffice, Blender, etc. In fact, I have a lot of pirated software that I just don't use.... Though I lack motivation to clean up drive.

Time to downgrade! Microsoft released Windows 10 free for everyone, then just so happens to release updates that scan through your software to see if they're not up to par with Microsoft's standards. Bullshit, all of it. No more ps3 controller? Bullshit. No more cracked programs, sure that's good I guess but I don't want Windows searching through all my shit just to make sure I don't have any illegitimate programs. Might be time for a switch back to Windows 8.1 if this goes through
