Linus gets owned for his BS again lol. 14:25 is the best time stamp to start at. Have some ball dude, You are loosing what little credibility you have left. This is a follow up video, that covers their response on the wan show.

Another LTT video to add to the wall of shame. Can we please get away from these recite a marketing script videos that LTT does from time to time.

I always use hardware raid, but I am old, from the days when software raid was not mature and would corrupt its self if it ran out of CPU. The main advantage is better performance with writing to NVRAM, rather than waiting for the data to be written to disk.

I think you would be best to do testing in AWS or Alibaba first. Amazon do upto ~4TB of RAM machines, Start out small and scale up until you hit diminishing returns. I think you will find that you will need less RAM than you think. What database are you running? Do not waste you time with a workstation, know what works first before you throw money at it.

Run an LSI raid card with an array of SSD's in a 0.5TB Cachecade array. That will give you 0.5TB of SSD level caching. You can do that pretty cheaply, as you can get the controllers and cachecade hardware keys cheap secondhand.

I think you miss understand how the DB world works. If you are hitting disk it is broken. You should be reading out of RAM and writing to NVRAM on the disk subsystem. What is your read to write ratio. basically just size your ram so the database (the active bits) fit into RAM.

Are AIO's normally this unreliable?
Erkel replied to Erkel's topic in Custom Loop and Exotic Cooling
Would have to check, have moved on anyway. -
Are AIO's normally this unreliable?
Erkel replied to Erkel's topic in Custom Loop and Exotic Cooling
Running off of CPU_Fan headers and everything in the bios optimised for fan speed. No corsair link as these are linux server boxes, not desktop PC's Was after max cooling for maximum turbo boost. -
Are AIO's normally this unreliable?

Running 24/7 or just daily use? -
I decided to use AIO's (Corsair H100i v2) on some cheap xeon database builds and I got the following: Build1: AIO lasted 11 months, replacement lasted 14 months Build2: AIO lasted 19 months (do not actually know if it in fact lasted that long, as did not get an alarm for it and only found that is was dead when doing some testing) So that is 3 out of 3 AIO's. Pumps are dead, running off of supermicro motherboards with highend Corsair or EVGA power supplies. Are they really only good for ~12 months when run 24/7? Have since given up on AIO and use large noctua CPU coolers instead.

What are the scariest tech-related things you've ever experienced?
Erkel replied to Jurrunio's topic in General Discussion
The ongoing disaster that was decided to go with intel SSD's. Have a few million dollars worth of industrial electronics manufacturing equipment that I look after and experiencing ~20% failure rate. This week swapping out 5 intel SSD's that are failing. If you have an SSD I would recommend checking it with something like HD sentinel. Intel 535 and 540 series. -
which manufacturer makes the best parts
Erkel replied to eliitedisowned's topic in General Discussion
motherboard: Asus ram: KIngston graphics card: Asus or Gigabyte SSD: Samsung, (Avoid Intel, ~20% failure rate so far) hard drive: WD fan: noctua cases: fractal power supply: EVGA, (used to be be Corsair, but marketing has taken over, and burned badly by their marketing department POS cases) -
Sounds like an IT recruiting company in NZ lol. Never found had an experience where that staff were IT savy. You are a multinational with the desktops running out of Sydney or something? You on UFB? Maybe simple networking issues. I am in Auckland and we have a china office, RDP is not that bad going all that way.

Virtualisation on Dell Poweredge 2950
Erkel replied to JJL Computers LTD's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
There are gen I, II or III, check the top left of the front panel, for a II or III. In general that box is ewaste, (if you paid more than 20 pounds for it, you got scammed) try to go with something newer if you can. DDR3 at a minimum. R710 or R610 etc -
Supermicro if you find an old supermicro chassie you can use, or pull the power supply out of.

Sources for UPS batteries? (Rack Mount UPS)
Erkel replied to Razor Blade's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
I use Panasonic, have about 150 deployed with out issues, you can get them in 5 or 10 year life span variants. keep them cool if you want them to last. LC-R127R2P1 and LC-P127R2P1 -
I agree with Amazon, as it pushes up the prices for everyone else. 11% average is crazy, you could understand that in a category like clothing, but not in general. In the hardware and electronics markets is it crazy, People needing electrical tools for small weekend projects etc, just order them then return them once they are finished with them. Is bad with some of the big box stores as well. You see a mass of returns of big screen TV's after big sporting events. People are not legitimately buying the products in a lot of cases, They are ordering them with the intention of using them for a short time and then returning them for a refund. They cannot be re-sold as new, so someone has to pay for it and that is the honest people.

Decommissioned servers for actual server use
Erkel replied to Littlejd97's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
$4000 per month or per year? Really come down to the economics of it. AWS is about infrastructure as a service, they make all the physical layer problems go away. If only $4000 per year, you are probably better to stay on Amazon. If $4000 per month I would look at local hardware, but bear in mind that you have to maintain it and ensure you have good redundancy, backup and DR processes. You do not want to get into the trap of going down the path of thinking that doing something your self is always going to be cheaper than paying someone who is an expert at it that does it at scale. When are you are a company. I have been in places like that. Spending $2-$3 in labour / staff time to save a $1 does not make sense. I run almost all my infrastructure in house using second hand or clearance sale hardware, and it would be uneconomical for us to move to Amazon. But you need to be a reasonably large scale before it makes sense to take on the overhead of dealing with everything hardware and network wise, vs AWS providing it as a service. -
I fixed a server, now what to do with it?
Erkel replied to RobertTheSwede's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Given the vintage of it, it is generally considered uneconomical to run these days. Unless you do not pay for power I would ditch it. Or maybe keep it in the basement as a heater for winter. -
Toss it, You should be able to get lot more recent Dell 1950/2950 or similar vintage for basically nothing, even the resellers will not touch them.

I think that it was a bit of a dick move that it is apparent that Tunnelbear found out about it via the youtube video. I know what LTT is going to say in response and I do not care. It is what it is. It was a business decision, based on being the cool kid. LTT the influencer, that is your job.

Zotac has the worst customer support so far.
Erkel replied to DrBonesMcCoy's topic in General Discussion
You have a perpetual motion machine, stop abusing Zotac and go cash in on the cool trillion or so dollars that its worth.
