Wait for the 790. They'll be comparably powerful and two cards aren't worth the noise and power consumption.

Dual 780s one would think would be more powerful, as this happens with all cards, but it depends on budget, they will create more heat and use more power....

Thanks so much for joining. My vision is a community based on positive member interaction and helping each other. I believe that if we all work together toward this goal, we will have success in the long run.
We don't have official forum rules or anything like that yet, but as long as everyone is respectful of each other, and patient with the growing pains that we are going to experience (vBulletin 5 is VERY beta right now) we can make this into an AWESOME community forum.

Because the new ones are only a couple months from release, I would just wait for them to come out.
There will be pretty much no performance improvement, but there will be a pretty large power efficiency improvement.
So if you care about power consumption and heat output, you should wait. If you don't go ahead and get the current CPU.

Maybe if you downgrade far enough it becomes an upgrade?

Definitely not. The 3970x is leaps and bounds ahead of the 4770k in most applications. As you just upgraded, I would not change it, but in most games there probably won't be much of a performance difference between them. However, you should be good for at least another 3 years or so with a 3970x, maybe more, depending on what your usage scenario is.

HELL NO, you'll be good for years, a 3970x is waaaaay more powerful than a 4770k if you overclock it to 4.0+ since it's an 6 core processor, and x79 can support quad sli/crossfire, no need to upgrade, or I should say, downgrade.
