  1. I obviously can't know for sure how much knowledge Linus has, but I am pretty sure that he is there for every major server software update or change in their infrastructure. And those changes will require a huge amount of troubleshooting so saying he has next to no knowledge in that regard is just not right to assume out of thin air imo.
  2. I personally feel like windows gets way too much bad reputation anyways. As a software dev I have worked with Linux and MacOS extensively which I only heard good things about before trying them. As an avid gamer I have had years of windows experience beforehand and all I can say about either of these three operating systems is: Each of them is garbage. Linux is better in some aspects, macOS wins here and there and Windows wipes the floor in other areas. Especially MacOS, which is often praised for its stability, has crashed many more times for me than my gaming rig running windows 10 with overclocked hardware that has changed multiple times over the last few years without reinstalling the os. Linux on the other hand sometimes just feels like a glorified CLI with some UI elements to make it seem like it’s an everyday joe’s os. I strongly agree with the point being made that Linux is in many instances not usable without using the command line. Until it improves in that regard Linux will never become a mainstream os like some like to claim. If I had to give a recommendation to people for setting up a new install and they want to avoid as much hassle as possible: just stick with windows. It supports so much hardware and software combinations that you will rarely run into issues when running any somewhat “normal” hardware from the last 10 years.
  3. Interested to see how it evolves over the next few (1-3) years. I’ve always felt like it’s the final touch and polishing with regards of long term support that held back steam hardware.
  4. I started to undervolt it as I wasn’t happy with it running at 90°C. AMD says it’s fine for the chip to operate at that temperature but it’s nothing I want my CPU to be at all the time. I‘ve read loads of threads with people with NH-D15s having similar experiences as I do. Like others have mentioned the 5800x is just a beast to cool.
  5. I set the limits to 110 - 85 - 110 and the offset to -25 on mine with an air cooler and got temps down quite significantly hitting ~80C on Cinebench.
  6. What are your specs? Did you make sure that everything is plugged in correctly? If the front usb is not working it might be that you did not connect the headers correctly. Does the system post?
  7. I don’t want to discourage you, programming is awesome and has so many fields you can specialize in. I just want to add that game development might not be the dream you are thinking of. The jobs are oftentimes not as well paid as jobs in other software fields and work times can be rough (look at crunch times before releases). I decided for myself that it’s not worth destroying my passion just to work in the gaming industry and instead went into other fields in the industry and am more than happy to have done so
  8. What motherboard and bios are you running? The 5000 series should put cores to sleep when in idle even without the power saving plan
  9. That’s what the current situation is sadly. GPUs are really scarce right now so you have to see what you can get your hands on.
  10. Im currently running a x5670 on a X58 board myself. Honestly if you don’t have the board already it’s probably not worth it. I doubt that these AliExpress boards are any good at overclocking and that’s what makes these old Xeons worth it in the first place.
  11. Im probably not going to go quite a lot into memory OC anyways so that’s probably fine. I have two hdds and a relatively loud GPU atm anyways so I’m not too concerned about the fan. Thanks for the input
  12. I'm looking into upgrading my old x58 Platform soon and I'm really torn on which Motherboard to get. Is there any reason to not get the MSI x570 Tomahawk? It just seems to be an absolute beast at that price point and anything equally good VRM wise is B550. I was thinking about the Gigabyte B550 PRO AC/AX as well but I just can't justify "stepping down" in the Chipset if the MSI board is just that good.
  13. I’m mostly gaming and doing some software development on it so I don’t need multithreaded performance that much. Got the x5670 running at 4GHz
  14. I’m in the same boat as OP. Bought a PC from a friend a few years ago with a Gigabyte X58-UD5 and i7 920. Since then I upgraded to a Xeon X5670 and 16GBs of Ram. I don’t know exactly how old the parts are but the oldest must be the Motherboard or the CPU so I would guess 10-11 years by now. That being said with Ryzen 5000 there finally might have come a time where this system will be sent to serve as my NAS
  15. I think what you want are Makros. There is plenty of software or hardware out there that lets you do this
