  1. Did anyone get to view the eclipse today? I got to the line of totality and was able to take some pictures.

  2. Home lab update. I rearranged the rack so that all external connections except for poe, goes to the back of the rack. I put a pro-curve switch back there. All internal connections go to the front of the rack.  Eventually I will have a separate  network closet for the devices outside the rack.  The rack will have one connection to that network closet.  The rack will be in its own server closet with an AC unit, and a passive vent system in case of power failure.

  3. The orange box is 2 bucks on steam.

  4. I replaced a first gen unifi switch's fans with Noctua fans.  The noise reduction is as expected with Notuca.  Their small fans are so much better noise wise than anything that will come with your device.

Did that with an old HP ProCurve a few months back and the difference is incredible.

  5. Half Life is currently free until the 20th on steam.

  6. Rack Update:

I replaced the main PDU I was using (just a glorified power strip) with a switched Triplite PDU.  This PDU has two imputs in where it can fail over, reportedly, in less than a 7ms.  I have tested the switch and confirmed that my systems do not shutdown during the switch.  I have the primary power connected to my UPS.  The secondary is connected to the mains.  Ideally I will connect it to a second UPS but its not a priority atm.  For now, this will protect from the UPS failing and causing the systems from shutting down.  This PSU also has an AMP meter on the front for power monitoring.  There is also management features I have not explored yet. The PDU is the Tripp-Lite PDUMH15ATNET

  7. Android 14 comes to pixel devices. Personally the advertised new feature list seems a bit, mild. I am still waiting for manual controls for their camera app https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/4/23900207/android-14-update-download-google-pixel
  8. With the latest gforce driver update pushed out today. A news article was posted talking how NVIDA has handed RTX remix over to "four of half-life 2s topp mod teams." It will be interesting to see how this Ray Tracing project compares to many other that have come before it. Digital foundry did a 4 way playthrough showing just such a previous mod. source https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/half-life-2-rtx-remix-in-development/
  9. I got a used pro-curve switch.  It had a squeally fan, so I replaced it with a Noctua fan.  The switch is whisper quiet now.

The pro-curve replaces the SMC switch.

  10. I got an ebay 3090 FE for cheep.  I put it on an EK WB.  It replaces my 1080 ti.  The WB came first and is really heavy.  I laser engraved and cut some clear acrylic to use as a support bracket.

I may upgrade the two fan rad with a three fan rad to account for the extra heat.  In my testing, most of the games i played, really only got up around 65c on the hotspot, but a few did get to 80c.

As for the extra memory of the 3090, I tested some of my larger blender projects and It is awesome.  Its gunna make my creation process easier.  Optix is really cool.

    The CPU is a core i7 11700K.

    Ram is 32GBs 3600

  11. I finally upgraded the fractal case of my VM server.  I went with the iStarUSA D-214-MATX Black Steel 2U Rackmount Chassis 2 External 5.25" Drive Bays.  Its light enough that no rails are needed.  I need to get some front fans as I didn't have any to fit the intake.

  12. I upgraded my nas with three SSD's over the weekend.  I replicated a zvol onto it that I used to store my virtual machines.  The responsiveness improvement was dramatic.  I recommend running virtual machines off ssd's when ever you can.

  13. I've been learning the characters of hiragana starting late last year.  I've finally gotten to learning some words and phrases with sentence structure.  Its pretty cool and rewarding.

  14. Thank you, I was able to integrate that into the script #Create Var name and prompt user to enter a username $name = Read-Host -Prompt "Enter Username." #check to see if the username already exist and exit if yes $AdUser = Get-ADUser -Filter {SamAccountName -eq $name} if ($AdUser -eq $null) {Write-Host "Username avalible, please continue on."} else {Write-Host "Username already exists. Please Try Again."; exit} #create var's for first and last name and prompt user to enter them $surname = Read-Host -Prompt "Enter Last Name" $givenname = Read-Host -Prompt "Enter First Name" #create var's for TAs, Teachers, and students. 15. I am writing a powershell script to make new users in our AD. The workflow I am currently working on. * Prompt asking what the user is, student, teacher, or ta * based on that selection insert the distinguished name correctly into the script. The code below is such that I have a script for each OU I want the user to go into. What I was trying to do was prompt for teacher, student, or ta. Each of those a variable with the corresponding OU ($teacher, $student, $ta). Then I made another variable ($path). I was hoping that if the user wrote teacher it would write to $path. Then I could do something like, $($path) and that become the desired variable. But the script just output "$ teacher" rather than treat it like a variable. I also want to do the same with groups. Where the user gets added to different groups based on who they are. But I will tackle that after figuring out how to achieve this goal. $name = Read-Host -Prompt "Enter Username." $surname = Read-Host -Prompt "Enter Last Name" $givenname = Read-Host -Prompt "Enter First Name" #$email = Read-Host -Prompt "Enter Email." #$teacher = "OU=Teachers,OU=Educators,OU=Alpha,DC=REDACTED,DC=REDACTED" #$student = "OU=Students,DC=REDACTED,DC=REDACTED" #$path = Read-Host -Prompt "Type student or Type teacher" #Write-Output "$""$path" New-ADUser -Name "$name" -GivenName "$givenname" -Surname "$surname" -EmailAddress $name"@REDACTED.com" –OtherAttributes @{‘ProxyAddresses’='SMTP:' + $name + '@REDACTED.com'} -PasswordNeverExpires 1 -Accountpassword (Read-Host -AsSecureString "Enter Password") -Enabled $true -Path "OU=Students,DC=REDACTED,DC=REDACTED"
