  1. Yeah, I thought about an AIO. The problem with such an investment is that I have no idea what the extent of the damage is on the existing chipsets and such; wasting around $60 bare minimum on something that might still die with its current damage isn't exactly viable. I should have clarified, I'm more or less using this as a test case for when I have to buy a replacement down the road. The socket type is BGA and modern consoles use a custom APU from AMD, hence why finding an actual cooler is so difficult. The PS4 gets maybe two square inches' worth of surface intake using a puny laptop fan and heatsink for primary cooling of the APU and the memory modules, after which said fan is supposed to pump all of that hot air through the integrated PSU and out the back of the case, right below the main ports on the console. Also, the entire f***ing motherboard is encased in seamed aluminum that is used as one giant heat dispersion method, which is why the case itself gets hot. Point is, aftermarket cooling truly is a necessity for the stock PS4, as it will burn itself out with common use after maybe four years.
  2. Obligatory notice: If this is in the wrong section, could you please move it or tell me where it goes? Thanks. Anyways, I was combing through my junk drawer and came across my old PS4. I assembled it and remembered why I hadn't used it. The native cooling method on the console is atrocious, and I've owned an original Xbox One. Loud, ineffective, and the early models (like mine) will actually scorch the HDMI port or connectors with the heat that it pumps out the back. All of that being said, I was wondering if anyone had modded their PS4 with a simple cooling upgrade. Fancy watercooling aside that costs way too much money (yes, Linus, I remember that video), does anyone know of an alternative BGA or compatible heatsink that actually helps? I don't care about aesthetics or requirements, I just need to keep this thing cool. So, any ideas?
  3. Just saying, if you can spare $500 more you can get a much better setup in my opinion. It would need further upgrades, but it would still kill processes like a boss. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/HBLN7P
  4. Even after playing everything from Demon's Souls to the old Sonic games on the Genesis, I would have to say Jak 2 or 3 just because of the troll-so-hard-they-are-just-dicks-after-a-certain-point engine. You can make a jump and then somehow fall off of a non-sloped edge, the hitbox relationships for the enemies and the actual projectiles were ridiculous, and let's not forget those damn TUNNEL SEQUENCES!!!! Just a slight twitch and you were dead, over and over again. Yeah, have fun repeating that same stretch of tunnel 20 times. While it may seem funny, I have only ever beaten Jak 3 once and have never beaten Jak 2, yet I've beaten all kinds of other games. Strangely enough, and I may be alone on this, but does anyone else feel that the games got easier after Jak 2? It feels like they slowly but surely lowered the difficulty level. While it was frustrating at times, this was also part of what made the game fun.
  5. Not that I know of, I'm just not sure on what components I should use. Would 1600 be fine or should I go higher for RAM speed?
  6. I used to be an apprentice to a computer repair shop and this guy comes in with a massive rig, completely customized and worth over $2000. It continuously gave him errors and would not start up, it would just black screen and rev higher and higher until you cut the power. Turns out he had bought RAM that was 2133 MHz when he had enough power to run 1600 MHz; in other words, he shrimped out on the PSU. The thing is, the RAM was incredibly expensive <can't remember the brand, it was gold-plated/colored>.
  7. I would try and create a build myself, but I wanted some second opinions. I just watched the review for the Corsair 380T case and immediately wanted to use it as my base, but the issue is that I do a bit of everything: video editing, level/model/content creation using various high-end tools, gaming on everything from Far Cry 3 to classic games <Quake 2/UT2003>. I also create and test mods for various Source games and am hoping to move up to UDK/CryEngine development. All of that said, this was the baseline of what I was going for: -16 GB of at least 1866 MHz RAM -Graphics card that can go from gaming/streaming to multithread processing I.E. Photoshop CS6, After Effects, Premiere, etc. -I will be <hopefully> buying a drawing tablet sometime in the future for easier design and modeling, so if that would cause any problems.... -I have a feeling that something from Asus or Gigabyte <for the form factor> would be probable for the motherboard. -Since I will be moving from task to task and performing both gaming and rendering, should I go for an Intel system or an AMD system? -I already have the HDD taken care of, but I might need a monitor or two... All in all, I can spend $1600 for the base build <order the key components first, then upgrade later on> minus the cost of the monitors and HDD's. NOTE: The case is not set in stone; if there would be restrictions or if it would be wiser to get a bigger case, then feel free to say something. I appreciate any help with this, I have graveyards at one of my local stores so it's kind of difficult to design a build afterwards hahaha.
  8. If anyone has Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Terraria, Rift, Path of Exile, or any other games and is interested in multiplayer let me know. I'm a bit of a modder, soooo yeah. MDT/MST (UTC-7:00)
  9. Yeah, that's why I saved up for a while and bought a full-on drawing panel. Real-time feedback and much better resolution than my current panel.
  10. So I noticed that for CS6 and above <Adobe> Windows 8 and 8.1 have some type of bug that is incompatible with the programs; as a result, you have to limit the GPU by switching it to Basic mode, which limits you severely if you go to render or perform high quality edits. Should I downgrade to Windows 7 and deal with it, or do I keep 8.1 and hope that a solution emerges from Adobe? Combine this with other bugs between other design programs and I'm not exactly sure if I should downgrade or not. Any advice would be welcome. P.S. This is a brand new build, so data or incompatibility shouldn't be an issue.
  11. The idiot installed a specialized version of Windows that he downloaded. These are bad because they are typically modified in the base code and structure by people that have insufficient knowledge and/or experience. A normal "pirated" <such a stupid term> version has no differences, except MAYBE some blocks on the built-in spyware that comes with Windows 8/8.1. Installing a new copy should work fine, just be careful when you go to download it, IF you download it.
  12. Things can be really sketchy if you simply clone the drive, so while it sucks and can become rather tedious, it would be a safer option just to reinstall Windows and your programs. I can't remember what it's called, but there is a way to create a custom OS installer where it will automatically install any applications that you want and can also remove any junk or unwanted programs as well; the catch is that you have to know the bit and the programs that you want. It's pretty handy.

  14. Long story short: it was a game night over at my friend's house, graduation was around the corner, it was 3:00am and we were a little buzzed, and I've been obsessed with L33T but wanted something that I could enter on any forum or community since they don't allow numbers for the first character.
