  1. We are a small team of 4 made up of two ex Weta Digital artists (one of which being me) and two Freelancers. Weta Digital has their own IT department that would no doubt know everything they need to to put stuff like this together. But because I am only a concept artist and the other guy was in the Camera department, we needed the extra advice. Thanks everyone for the input on this, looks like we are going to go with the Xeon build. Though I have heard that you need balanced memory configurations in order to get the most out of the hardware. What kind of memory setup would you recommend? We currently have a single 64GB kit (4x16GB), however as this is quad channel will there be any issue if we assign two sticks to one cpu and two to the other? Weta does also use render boxes, the render wall does occasionally get bogged down by users, so a separate linux box can be a life-saver.
  2. Hey guys, looking for some advice on building a Rendering Workstation. I have recently joined a small VFX team working out of Wellington New Zealand. I have been living and working with these guys for almost 2 years and have been building PCs for a while successfully. However I am stumped by a little problem at the moment, whether to go with a i7 5960X or Dual Xeon 2630V3? We are using programs such as Nuke, Adobe AfterEffects (with Element 3D), Cinema 4D as well as possibly some Maya 2015. Price is not really an object as the production budget will be covering this cost, however we would like to keep it below NZ$10000 to stay in good terms with the Director. Here are the parts lists for the two possible builds: Option A: http://nz.pcpartpicker.com/p/7fjgMp Option B: http://nz.pcpartpicker.com/p/dzRynQ Let me know what you guys think, should I go with the i7 or the Xeons? Are the Xeons worth the extra money for this work type? Or is there some other kind of solution that would be better?
  3. Hey guys, looking for some advice on building a server. I have recently joined a small VFX team working out of Wellington New Zealand. I have been living and working with these guys for almost 2 years and have been building PCs for a while with success. However we are now finding that, as a group of six, we are in need of a server as multiple users are dealing with large files. I am pretty competent when it comes to building workstation PC rigs but have found getting my head around what exactly is involved with building a server difficult. Is there anyone who could explain to me what I need to do based on the needs of this group? We are looking for high-speed (10Gigabit) storage of around 32TB including redundancy with an off-site back-up of equal size that we can copy/mirror/sync to at the end of each day. We are also getting VDSL for the flat we are using as an office (100Mb/s) which will allow us to ship the 2K resolution shots we complete on our current project to Australia where it will be cut by the editor and director. The current budget is $5000, but we can be flexible if it gives us the speed and efficiency we need. Also what kind of software would be best for this setup? Thanks in advance for your input!
  4. Not sure what I want, but I know what I'll be getting... socks and undies... every fucking time.
  5. I understand your humor but you should know that I have no experience with teamspeak or private servers so try to be understanding. Thank you for the advice I will turn off the servers for now and see if it clears up. I will post updates here.
  6. Ok so Voip was proving to be a rubbish experience for me on BF4 so I doubled down and got a 10slot TS3 server from Wombat Servers (based in AUS) but I am a bit of a server newbie and have no idea how permissions work and seem to have lost the erver to 5 people including one who seems to have given himself server rights to his own channel and I have no idea how to get rid of them all. I have tried to reset permissions by getting a new privilege key but everytime it comes back and says that the key is invalid. I have also looked online for any solutions but haven't found anything useful. Any and all successful help would be greatly appreciated, Tim
  7. I have put off upgrading my portable tech for a long time now so I guess I should be asking this, What do I replace my SA2315/55 GoGear Phillips 1GB MP3 player and my Nokia 1100. Don't worry I don't need help, I have a badass PC to make up for these short-commings. The mp3 player has been great over the years I have had it but recently it has been playing up (ha! get it?) and probably needs replacing, but there are several things about it that I like that I am not sure other products have: It runs on AAA batteries (being able to replace the battery while I am on the go has been invaluable, I can take multiple batteries on bush walks or to work etc) The battery actually lasts for a while (As it has a non-colour display it is very energy efficient and lasts for at least 5 days, so while two batteries take 36 hours to charge I can still use a third, as I listen to this thing ALOT) It uses a 3.5mm jack (using nice headphones is possible) The phone was a hand me down from my parents years ago. It calls. Its texts. That is about it. The best things about it are: Battery life. (1.5 Weeks on average. Most devices nowadays only last a single day before you need to charge it. I understand this is commonplace and I don't mind getting used to this) Rugged as f#&k. (The only thing capable of taking out a Nokia... is another Nokia) Nothing else really. Needs: Ideally i'd like to be able to check emails, have high capacity up-gradable storage options for music, A 3.5mm audio jack for my headphones Replaceable battery or power-bank compatability I would like to keep the cost down but will save more if the device is worth it. So in conclusion: Is there a single device on the market that encompasses all or most of the good things about my old tech with the addition of some new features? Thanks for the help in advance, Tim
  8. Cooler design looks very cool, would probably give away my two 770s to my sister and brother if I was to get the 980. It does seem weird for the majority of the lights to be on the bottom of the card as most of the time you won't see them, but I guess its still awesome.
  9. Currently doing a build for my sister in a white Bitfenix Prodigy and wanting to use the leftover white corsair sleeved cables in a Silverstone 600W PSU is it possible to switch the connectors on the wires in order for them to fit and have them work? Has anyone done it before? Otherwise I have a short cable kit and the right tools, but sourcing sleeving in NZ at the moment is impossible, no-one is selling it, and the Lutro store in down due to them moving building. Also could I buy a 24 pin ATX Sleeved Extension and mod it to plug straight into the PSU? It would be just like a short cable kit. Anyone with experience in experimenting with this? Regards, Tim
  10. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11287718 Usually NZ users have, in the past, been required to use VPNs in order to access US sites like Netflix and Hulu, however Slingshot (ISP) have made a deal with a couple of Hollywood studios to have their films streamed through US only services. The fact that this is official is nice but will mean that if the very 'un-net neutral' plan for ISPs to charge netflix extra for bandwidth goes ahead, it might cause prices to jump up, and no-one will bother with Slingshot (not that many people have to begin with). TVNZ on Demand is ok but the bitrate is terrible and most internet connections make US speeds seem decades ahead. When we want something with decent quality and in a relatively short time period, New Zealanders use the Pirate Bay. I my opinion if we had relatively cheap, legitimate and high quality online film streaming service(s) in New Zealand I would absolutely pay for it, film piracy would also take a hit. The same way Steam has crippled video game piracy, and Spotify has taken a chunk out of music piracy.
  11. Hey there this is not that good of a mod as it failed to a degree but I thought I would share it with you guys anyway. I am doing an 'all white' build soon for my sister (who doesn't have a large budget) and decided to experiment a little with cheaper options but also make it look good as my first gaming PC was about NZ$3000 First off i disassembled the fan from the aluminium fins and spray painted it with a primer coat, then again with two coats of white spray paint (just a random non heat-resistant spray). This also meant pulling out the 'snap on' pegs, one of which broke during the process. I have yet to fix something to the top of the cooler in place of the intel sticker, so I have just cut a simple white paper circle for the sake of hiding internal components for a photo. The 4-pin cable was rather painstakingly sleeved with some of Lutro Custom's white 550 Paracord and held in place with standard 3/16" heatshrink. This however made the cable much larger than its previously un-sleeved state and required me to cut/accidentally break some of the cable guides (the one on the top and side) which resulted in some paint flaking. Overall the experiment didn't go that great, but I love the all white finish (albeit a rough one) but I am wondering if anyone here has experience painting components would like to share some advice.
