1). I remember telling a friend that I was milling PCB traces for a project, and he thought that had something to do with cutting wood.

2). When I built my mom's computer, she wanted to download iTunes. She went to the Apple website and started dragging around a picture in the browser and raged at me, thinking her PC was broken.

3). I personally know a lot of people that buy the most expensive Macbook Pro's to use as Facebook machines. This makes me sad.

I thought the rule of thumb with electronics was to jam the connector into the port until it worked?

I've encountered the same thing. Many people also have the misconception that the total graphics frame buffer/VRAM actually increases by adding a card in SLI or CFX. They should seriously add a warning label on the box to make sure know.

I almost choked on my coffee when I read that. My mom is exactly the same. She thought her iPhone could get a virus through voicemail. *facepalm*

Ouch..that's brutal, I'd probably cry. This is why you watch Linus' videos on YouTube, or find someone you know that has experience with computers before jumping into your first build.

I am currently going into my senior year of high school and am very interested in the hardware components of computers. I was wondering what people would suggest I major in in college. Feel free to move this topic as necessary.

It sounds like electrical engineering is the best option then become more specialized in computers.

I'd suggest studying Computer or Electrical Engineering if you want to get into hardware. I'm currently 3rd year in Elec. Eng and I love it but it may not be exactly what your'e looking for. Electrical engineering definitely has a larger scope than comp. eng, ranging from power generation, microwave and radio theory and applications, electronics (hardware), robotics, software (computer architectures in VHDL and other implementations) and even construction. I have a lot of friends that are doing Computer Engineering and they love it, but it was a little too specific for me when I was in first year. I hope this helps you, I was in the same shoes as you before. Just do what you love and you won't regret it! :-)

Electrical Engineering > Computer Hardware Engineering, EE is more diverse and better to such a specific major. Job options will be much greater as well, can always migrate to Computer Hardware but best to leave as many doors open in the beginning.

Another thing is my mom does something "important" on the computer such as hitting the final order button on an amazon order she holds down the mouse button for at least 5 seconds. I have no idea why. She also believes Norton destroys viruses, making you're computer completely immune. Finally she assumes that Skype, Youtube, and Steam are viruses, and that my computer is riddled with them because I use these things, and that if someone who has a computer with a virus uses facebook and you see their wall, you too have the virus.
