  2. I'm guessing it depends on the card. The expansion card I used to use allowed me to boot from it, that said the drive connected to it was visible in the BIOS.
  3. You should be able to supply those during the OS installation. Same with RAID cards. Also Linux is fine with booting from a USB. I do it all the time.
  4. AMD CPUs have some uses. For example, I'm likely going to use an AMD CPU in a server because they have ECC support for a lot less than Intel do. (Just to be clear, the i3 has ECC too but the only mobo's I can find in NZ are like $500)

  9. The CPU is almost definitely going to need to be intel. I'd say the G3258 or something Skylake but I haven't stayed up to date with Skylake so I can't recommend one.
  10. Is Secure Boot enabled? It prevents other OS's from running (Linux mainly)

    Assuming this monitor can be made to any spec, the outer edges don't need to follow the 50pixel/degree rule. (CostReduction++) I think I misunderstood you, you were find what res will be the last not what is optimal. I'd say the optimal something in the 21:9 scope

    16k is 4x 8k. Also human FOV is ~107 (from memory) for both eyes overlap, anything else is peripheral.
  13. I didn't want to reply to this thread but I wonder if overvolting (surely you can overvolt or at least overclock a mac) would work instead of disabling thermal cutoff.

  16. For a server doing what you want, I'd lean toward FreeNAS because of its ZFS support (I mean the community support) but CentOS, RHEL or Debian make good servers. Also, for a ZFS setup, you might be best going for pool consisting of 2 (double to four) mirrored vdevs. That would give a setup akin to RAID 10. This is good because it Mirrored vdevs resilver faster than a raidz vdev
  17. It really depends on your field. For the most part, an understanding of system architecture and software design will allow you to do almost anything you want but some things require more complex maths. I want to do graphics development so, for me, indepth knowledge of linear algebra is pretty much mandatory.
  18. You can with blueprints but it's advisable not to due the extra draw calls each object would incur and the difficulties in animating that model later.

  20. Assuming my information is current, NVLink is a 64GB/s interconnect so yes it is superior to PCIe Gen3.0. And IIRC, it should also allow GPU memory to be pooled.
  21. Pascal was more tailored for neural networks. A convolutional neural network isn't an ordinary compute workload so it is actually possible that Pascal will be 5x faster (CUDNN will likely also be getting optimisation updates for Pascal, so there is that). In graphics performance, I'd expect another ~35% increase over Maxwell. Well, that is true but we won't be having 8-way SLI in desktop machines for a while even if it is simply due to PCIe lanes / physical connectors. Since NV requires 8x Gen3.0 to have SLI verification, 8-way would require 64 PCIe lanes which no CPU currently supports(I don't even think high end Xeons have that many, but they can run multiCPU). And NVLink does more than SLI. SLI shares framebuffers, NVLink is a high speed interconnect.
  22. I watched that at GPU Tech conf (I think it was there) and NVidia's CEO said 10x was "CEO math". It comes from 5x the neural network compute performance combined with the fp16. Since 2x the fp16s can be processed at once, it gives 2x the performance. 5x2 = 10 so 10x. And IIRC is was only for neural networks not just everything. Also NVLink is not SLI.
  23. A live Linux install should be able to get the files back off. It can probably also get the registry key of the license of Windows with some know how (Not that I have that know how though).
