the biggest problem you are going to face is the 150mm height restriction with that case
my mate has a 8350 and they do run toasty without a decent cooler
i gave him my h100 which has tamed it as he has a narrow case similar to yours.
 
if your set on air cooling id go big with a Noctua NHC14 or the forementioned coolermaster GeminII S524 Ver.2
 
or look at a aio liquid cooler a h80i or equivalent at idle they are a litte noisier but under load much the same as a air cooler

vram was likely just cooled by the fan/fans on the stock heatsink. no harm done

a gtx 970 is only one part of a pc but yes it will trounce a consoles graphics performance and fidelity

noisiest fans i have ever bought, stay away they make grinding noises at all rpm....

just want to thank ProKoN and all that contributed to the guide
learnt alot more about overclocking my new haswell processor
alot more to it than my old 2600k or 3570k with just increase voltage
and increase the multiplier
managed to get my 4670k stable at 4.4ghz at 1.3v
cache clock multiplier at 42 1.3v
with a VCCIN of 2.0v
and im beating other scores ive seen in cinebench at 4.4
due to setting my cache clock.
