Scrapyard Wars Season 5 *Updated w/ Ep4 FINALE*
Steve0Kinev0 replied to LinusTech's topic in LTT Releases
Come on guys... There was no talk of prices/specs at the end of the video? Also, what was the deal with the benchmarking scenario? No test settings appeared to be validated (as shown with tomb raider). Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't either team have easily cheated by lowering the settings to get a tad higher fps in gaming benchmarks? This was easily the most polished and entertaining scrapyard wars to watch, but I was just bummed at the end. There was so much cheating/rule bending and fighting for the win/loss rather than having fun at the end.- 199 replies

I'd say if you're going to get a new Mobo you'd be better off getting a new CPU. A modern cheap $55 pentium + $45 mobo will blow the overclocked core 2 out of the water. Coupled with a cheap 4GB stick of RAM should put the build at about the same price, Take off the SSD and you have another 4 gigs of RAM with an HD 7950 as i posted above WITH a new PSU... Correct me if I'm wrong in totaling this all up. *Edit: the 8GB of RAM would put the budget over too much I do like the idea of sneaking in an SSD and reusing that old CPU as it should still pair with a 6970 decently, not to mention ditching that dated PSU in the original system.

I realize the submission deadline is already over but this is what I would have done for $305. I actually just found out about this after scrapyard wars so I participated in the vote but wanted to share what I would have done Let me know what you all think. This build will work perfectly fine with a GTX 660. If you wanna order parts though, I'd be happy to put a build together for you and get you the best value within your budget.

I don't understand how linus picked his parts. He did explain it, but the parts list I came up with under his SAME guidelines/specs I managed to save around $35 dollars from his build AND managed to get a refurbed 7950 from GPU shack... If I got a cheap $100 GPU I would have saved around $80 off of his build. Can somebody shed some light on this for me? Did he have some other motive to pick parts that are much more expensive? How come he didn't get a locked i5 with a good H97 motherboard? The motherboard he addressed in this video, but he also showed how cheapo z97 boards don't OC much different than super expensive ones! So why spend the extra $50 on a board on a "budget" build. Here my variant of the build following his same guidelines. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/nD3PhM

Cleaning GPU Heatsink Discoloration?
Steve0Kinev0 replied to Steve0Kinev0's topic in Troubleshooting
Nope, I just tried to buff it out with the alcohol soaked paper towel. Performance of this card is solid as a rock, it's more of an OCD aesthetic thing. If there's no way to clean it, or if it's going to cost me a bunch of $$ then it's no bother. I figured there would be some guide to follow somewhere that I haven't found via da google -
Attached are 2 images of my Sapphire Tri-X OC R9 290 and the heat sink is discolored to this bronzie color. Any idea how to get rid of it? I've tried isopropyl 90% rubbing alcohol with a paper towel and that didn't do anything.
