First time overclocker

I have a new FX8320 cpu and I wanted to overclock it. So I watched some videos and I downloaded AMD OverDrive.

My multiplier is set @ x20 and Voltage 1.30 , so I ran the stability test for 1 hour and everything worked fine it seems.

No flickers or any kind of crash. So heres my question, what does the info mean after the test is done?

 

Im using a Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo. Stock fan with 4 case fans with good air flow. So how high can I go with this

being the FX8320 is just a FX8350 declocked, or so Im told. Any and all info is appreciated.

as high as you want

as long as your CPU temps are low

also get some cooling for the vrms..

AMD Overdrive sucks more than my Dyson.

So I went and tried to play my game I play.... Black Desert....and the game was all bugged out. So obviously the overclock was not good, I set back to stock until I know what the hell I am doing. 1st try,  fail...lol.

so i tried via my bios, setup everything via the video.... and during the prime95 stress test my pc freezes. had it set at 4.0ghz and voltage was at 1.235 ....any ideas? Do I up the voltage?

I've never overclocked that CPU, but I have that cooler. The best way to put it is I can get a "medium" overclock with it. So others with my CPU overclock anywhere from 4.0 GHz to 5.0 Ghz. I'm at 4.4 GHz / 1.250 vcore at a max core temp of 75C under load. What's safe usually depends on your vcore. Find out what the safe vcore range for the 8320 is and whatever stable clock you can get while staying in the range will be considered "safe".

how do I check vcore? I have speed fan, Core Temp, HWMonitor, etc.... is there a program that checks that? ty adamjp for the post.

Im good with the vcore.... :)  the internet is your friend. So do I basically just keep raising my multiplier and stress testing until it fails? And when it fails, do I then raise voltage to try and get it stable at that clock speed? Do I ever need to mess with my FSB at all??

Yes you got it, raise your multiplier until unstable, then raise your vcore. You can start your multiplier at a common overclock again for your particular CPU instead of having to raise it bit by bit all the way from stock. And no, you shouldn't touch your FSB, especially if you're new to overclocking. There are some great videos on overclocking on YouTube, including on Linus Tech Tips. Let us know if you have any more questions though.

 

Also don't run multiple temperature sensing programs at the same time, it can mess up your readings.

ok so i think i have a stable 4.2ghz... I ran Prime95 for 15minutes

 

temp1 - 58C

temp2 - 33C

GPU - 50C

Core - 50C at highest...fluctuates from 30C to 50C

 

this is all speed fan ....  any other test I can use besides Prime95, is 15minutes long enough? And are those temps ok?

15 minutes is not long enough, and Prime95 is not recommended (although usable on AMD). AIDA64 is better for real world, but still intensive, stress tests.

 

EDIT: 12 hours at least is the better amount of time

Like NeatSquid said, 15 minutes might not be enough to guarantee stability because a crash can happen after hours of testing. You might discover your overclock is unstable after weeks however, so it's really up to you how obsessive you want to be about it.

 

I do recommend that you make sure if you stress test with programs like Prime95 that your vcore is set to manual mode. You can set your vcore to adaptive for normal every day use, but don't stress test in adaptive as it might cause voltage spikes and unnecessary crashes. A free testing program that works more like real world applications is Cinebench, which is what I use because I don't do enough benchmarking to justify buying AIDA64.

 

Your temps are fine. I wouldn't exceed 80C under load.
