Seems pretty normal. 10 seconds to shut down completely, 5 seconds to post, 15 seconds to boot...

Yup. About what I'd expect.

windows 8 does it faster on an SSD, but both still kick the ass of a HDD.

Yeah, somehow I feel Windows 8 boots faster (SSD), but Windows 10 boot on SSD is still fast :3

Boot times will vary depending on your system not just the drive. 30 seconds is normal for a restart and OK for a boot, on the higher side but if everything else is running as you'd expect its fine.

The answer to that is the Fast startup feature on Windows 8, 8.1, and 10.

I don't use the Fast Startup feature.

Still Windows 8 boots faster, I don't know maybe it's just me.

For a little idea of the minimum you should expect from an SSD, Windows 10 boots from power signal to password screen in 28 seconds dead on a Q6600.

Mine takes 32 seconds from hitting restart to getting to the login screen with my SSD.

I think it's good.

As with all of these threads, I believe there is a lack of definition around specifically what is being timed.  Are you counting just the Windows boot, or the time to get through the BIOS, RAID and SCSI screens, etc. (if applicable) and whatever else happens as well?

Because 30 seconds for a total "from hitting the button" is reasonable, but if that's just Windows, no a HDD can do better.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

With all other variables constant an hdd CANNOT AND WILL NOT DO BETTER.

We have no idea how big his startup program list is or how inefficient his boot setup is. Hell we don't even know if he is running x99 or z97 or what? (This is relevant because default values for x99 results in post times around 10-30 seconds compared to nearly instant z97/z170 times).

OK sure yes things can happen that will slow a HDD down to a crawl in excess of several minutes but it absolutely possible for Windows to boot in under 30 seconds on an HDD, I've seen it done many times

Did you not read what I said? If his ssd is booting the computer in 30 seconds cloning that ssd and using an hdd CAN ONLY MAKE IT SLOWER.

That said depending on other issues I would take a look at what startup programs and loading he has. (Not to mention that if he is running x99, 30 seconds is actually pretty good).

I have an X79 build and bootup times on a rather old SSD and windows 10 are pretty snappy. POST takes most of the time.

Exactly, but he didn't mention if 30 seconds was full boot (including post or not).

For example it takes me perhaps 40 seconds to go from off to splash screen with my new x99 build, but with a reset I take less than 5 seconds to hit the Windows splash.

I am going to go ahead and time the time it takes to go from completely off to opening chrome, BRB
