Coocheer wireless Bluetooth speaker review

TopWargamer

About a week ago Coocheer contacted me to review their wireless Bluetooth speaker. I accepted the offer and thought that the speaker would be so-so. I mean, it is a $26 speaker after all. For that price though they were able to deliver excellent sound quality along with excellent battery life. I was quite shocked!

The Good

Coocheer’s Amazon page for their speaker states a battery life of 6-10 hours of continuous song playing. I didn’t test the battery life by continuously playing music for 6-10 hours, although I think you could easily reach those numbers. Instead I did a more practical test: a day out with friends, which is what I think to be a more realistic scenario. We played music for a few hours on end off and on throughout the day. The Coocheer speaker lasted the entire day, and there was still some juice left for the next day.

Now then, the most important part of this speaker: the sound quality. Again, for a $26 speaker, it delivered a lot more than I originally anticipated. The speaker was able to get surprisingly loud. I was even able to hear my music in another room with the door closed and upstairs. The audio was clear, crisp, and produced excellent highs, great mediums, and okay lows. (I’m referring to audio frequencies.) Obviously in a portable speaker you won’t get that lovely “BOOM” sound and feel on the lows (bass), but you can still tell it’s there. It’s are not completely washed out.

The So-So

There was only one so-so thing about this speaker: the build quality. The overall built quality is all right. It uses a hard plastic shell. My main issue is with the volume knob. It looks like it’s made of steel, but in reality it’s just cheap plastic. It wobbles too much. I’m not sure if this a manufacturing issue or a shipping issue. That part aside, the Coocheer speaker is not waterproof. I could see why this could be a potential turn off for some people, because this speaker would be ideal for pool-side music listening, music on a boat, etc…. If it were waterproof.

The Bad

There were only two (well technically three, but two of them go hand-in-hand) main issues with this speaker. Allow me to explain. I set the speaker on one side of the house and then walked to the opposite end. I was already starting to go out of range. At this point your music starts to stutter – playing off and on. When you eventually go back into range your music speeds up.  As soon as I stepped outside and closed the door, connection was lost. Now, I don’t think these issues are necessarily Coocheer’s fault. I’m almost positive this is a Bluetooth issue, but the Coocheer speaker is using Bluetooth v3.0 when v4.2 is out… So I’m not sure why that wasn’t implemented instead.

The other bad thing is that you’ll know when the volume is maxed out or turned all the way down, because a very loud, very annoying beep plays. Even worse, it interrupts your music to do so. That is not a good thing and completely ruins the music listening experience.

Should You Buy It?

If you can get over it not being waterproof, the annoying beep, and Bluetooth range, then yes, I say buy it. It’s only $26 and provides an excellent portable music listening experience.
