Pc won't post

Br3tt96

So my pc won't post and the only thing different was I took at 2 sticks of my 4 out. I made sure the rest of the two were perfectly in and nothing. A led on my motherboard is red, but it's the usb_12 boot_device_led. I have no clue what to do, I tried clearing the CMOS using the button on the back of the motherboard.

You need to test each stick of RAM individually or you won't find out which is faulty. The system should still POST even if the RAM is faulty. Also be sure you cleared the CMOS correctly, as that could be an issue. Other things I would try:

Remove the GPU and try to post using integrated graphics. If it does, that means your GPU is faulty.

Test each SATA device individually (if you have more than one). This could potentially indicate faulty SATA devices.

Make sure every connector is seated correctly, especially the CPU power and 24-pin ATX.

Make sure the RAM DIMMs are in the right slots, according to your motherboard manual.

Remove any USB devices besides the keyboard and mouse.

If you have any other expansion cards remove them and test them individually.

I tried putting all sticks back in and also I tried alternating them.

So basically, I had the pc on for 10 minutes and I turned it off to pull 2 sticks of ram out and when I tried to boot back up, and it began. All the power plugs are in, I tried removing the gpu and booting with integrated graphics, I only have 3 sata plugs, I tired to boot with just my ssd and wd, all the usb devices were removed minus the keyboard and mouse, and I do not have any expansion slot cards. I tried removing the battery for 10 minutes, but no dice. It's pissing me off that it's not at least getting into the bios.

Is the CPU fan plugged in? Some systems won't post if the CPU fans are not plugged in. I can't really think of anything else besides that. Perhaps try with a different PSU? If that is not the problem, then I think you may have a DOA motherboard.

EDIT: List of components, please?

Did you do the proper procedure? Like unplug the PC from the wall and ground yourself?

It's not a race to the bottom.

Unplug your USB 3.0 cable from your header if you have one, or at least make sure it is seated correctly in the socket.

Yeah, I unplugged it and nothing. The led is still on... I can say this is as soon as I touch the power button to turn off the system is imediately shuts off.

Is the GPU seated firmly and correctly in the PCI-E slot? That sort of thing has happened to me before. Are there any bent pins on the USB 3.0 header? Are any of your USB devices or keyboard and mouse connected in a USB 3.0 port?

I tired removing the GPU and reseating it, but no avail. All the USB stuff is out except the mouse and key and those are in a USB 2.0 port. The pins for the motherboard usb 3 header are all straight. It's just weird because it was running just fine! I turned it off, pulled two sticks of ram and tried to boot, but nothing! It's depressing....

Is there a reason you pulled out the two sticks of RAM? Try replacing them the same way they were when it was working. I honestly running out of reasons why it won't post. :/

Yeah, I've done everything that I know. I put them min exactly as they were. I pulled two out because for some reason I score higher on a benchmark with 8gb, and I also wanted to test the speed of 8 vs 16 in a video render.

You tried clearing the CMOS? Perhaps the voltage or clock speed is messed up. Try clearing the CMOS using the jumpers or removing the battery for 15 minutes.

Do you have an actual Clear_CMOS set of pins and jumper? If so, you can clear the CMOS in a few seconds compared to 15 minutes.

I waited 20 minutes to be on the safe side and still nothing. I'm talking to my brother's friend now, who works out geek squad and has built many computers and is overall better at tech stuff than me. I'll let you know if I get it fixed.

So I finally got it to boot. I literally did everything... Well, googling for about 2 hours led me to my motherboard shorting out. The massive boat anchor of a Noctua d15 made my board warp into the back of the motherboard tray... I made my system like a ghetto case/box test bench and it boots and works just fine.

Wow, very interesting. I never even thought of that. Maybe you should prop up your Noctua with some zip ties or something. Very glad you got the system working again, though.

I'd rather sell it and go water again before I mount some ugly zip ties. Lololol
