Updated Bios, GPU Now Crashing On Desktop EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0

Hey, thanks in advance for any help or advice.

I was attempting to update the bios on my card and it didn't go well.

Original BIOS: 84:04:36:00:70.

BIOS update was an official 1.1 Bios for the 04G-P4-2974-KR (BIOS: 84:04:1F:00:72) from EVGA's forums.

Card wouldn't boot with that BIOS, switched over to onboard graphics, found the same numbered BIOS: 84:04:1F:00:72 for a SCC, not SC, and flashed that on.

Now GPU is constantly crashing on desktop, and I don't know where to go from here. If anyone could help out with locating the proper BIOS: 84:04:36:00:70 for a EVGA SC ACX 2.0, that would be a great help.

NOTE: GPU was already extremely unstable, crashing my whole PC with the slightest overclock. Saw another forum mention a BIOS update fixed the issue for them, which is why I attempted to update.

There is a chance the GPU is crashing on desktop because it's just a shit card, I've seen others with the same issue. But I can't RMA this back to EVGA with a different BIOS, as I found out last night, that voids warranty. Unsure if an update from their forums counts as voiding warranty.

No, it's been so long since I last flashed a BIOS, that I forgot to, and the forum guide I followed didn't mention doing it.

So first you'll have to find out which bios your card really needs. The Bios Version number you mentioned is not going to help much.

Are you sure that you need the 04G-P4-2974-KR Bios with your Card? have you verified the part number by checking on the box or on the card itself? (stupid questions i know)

Yes, verified both part number and BIOS on GPU and on Box.

ok since you have alot of trouble with this shit evga card, i would recommend you to download the stock bios from this techpowerup Bios collection:

http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/index.php?architecture=&manufacturer=EVGA&model=GTX+970&interface=&memType=&memSize=

this should be the right version then (please double check):

http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/168684/evga-gtx970-4096-150108-1.html

Then i would flash it. And return this crap card back to evga/vendor telling them that your both systems just crash with this card. (i wouldnt tell them about the overclocking part)

That's the BIOS I already flashed on, and is currently running. The issue with that BIOS, is that it is for the 970 SSC version, I have the 970 SC version.

Even though it has the same BIOS name, EVGA Precision read it as a SC before, not SSC. So there's a chance, they won't RMA it, if they realise that even though the BIOS reads the same, it's the SSC version, not the SC version.

you wrote that "Original BIOS: 84:04:36:00:70." after that you said the update was "BIOS: 84:04:1F:00:72"

so i thought it was your orignal bios. Sorry.

Do you have any screenshots of GPU-Z which gives you a hint which Bios was on that card previously? Man you have made a mess, bios flashing is something really serious.

They are two bios versions marked in the Techpowerup list one is for acx1.0 the other is for acx 2.0, but its not guaranteed that these are the only versions of it for the evga gtx970 (sc).

And its the version 84.04.1F.00.72 but it states SC.. well either its the same you allready tried or a different. Thats why these Bios numbers doesnt help alot..........

you could also just sell the card as barely used on ebay before you literally just destroy it lol

Lol, I know, I've really fucked things up here. Unfortunately I don't have any screenshots.

Yea, you got it right, the original BIOS is: 84:04:36:00:70 and the update was 84:04:1F:00:72. But the first BIOS consistently crashes on desktop, and the second isn't even booting while installed.

Before with the original 84:04:36:00:70, EVGA Precision read it as an SC card with that BIOS, now it's reading it as a SSC, which means EVGA would most likely be able to tell it's not the same BIOS it shipped out with, even though it's the same BIOS number.

I couldn't in good conscious sell it on eBay and fuck someone over.

I think I'll just try and return it to Amazon as not working. Doubt they'll bother to test it, doubt they even have the serial number and part recorded anywhere. Invoice only states it's a EVGA GTX 970, surprised they don't even note down the part number or serial number.

yea amazon isnt really into testing and stuff, most likely they will sell it to a 3rd party vendor. which then sells it as b-product
