cloud vs. nas?

cruiserman

Any simple NAS solutions compared to cloud? Moving away to college soon and it be nice to setup a nas or a cloud before I leave.

What are some options that I have?

I used to use a cloud (google drive) and change that to my personal folders via the reg edit (I made a blog post on this on my very very old blog http://tomsnewtech.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/how-to-base-your-windows-user-on-google.html)

I then switched to using a file share on a computer. Then I switched to Bit Torrent Sync - NAS without a server. Now I use both a NAS I bought and dropbox. I use my dropbox for documents. and I store movies, software(install files), music on my NAS. My NAS can be accessed over the internet (http://jervi.uk:8088) so it acts like a cloud aswell (it also supports samba and FTP). I would recommend you use a cloud based system such as dropbox (much faster than Google drive) for your collage work as having fast access to files is important everywhere. My blog post can be used for dropbox aswell.

Really this is more about how much data you have and how fast you need/want to be able to access it.  If you have TBs of data, it may simply be unfeasible to use a cloud solution.

I would agree with @Jervi , use cloud for smaller stuff like documents and such.  But use a NAS for large media and such.

I'm looking at getting Mycloud EX2 from WD or is there something cheaper that will work around the same way?

I got my NAS really cheap second hand. I got a Noontec N5 with a 1TB Hard Drive for £50 ($85) which has a samba, FTP and a web interface. Upto 20 accounts and set the permissions for each account. also it has a built in Bit Torrent Client for downloading Torrents.

So if I was you I would have a search around even for second hand ones as they are just as good and a lot cheaper.

Hey cruiserman,

As the guys explained, depends on how much storage you are looking for and what exactly are you going to do with it.
WD My Cloud EX2 is a great NAS that has a number of useful features. It works fast and offers RAID0, RAID1 and JBOD options.
For simple storage and a smaller budget I could suggest checking out WD My Cloud and WD My Cloud Mirror. Both work great as simple NAS devices, providing access to your data over the network. Here are links to them:

I could also suggest checking out the newer 2-bay WD My Cloud EX2100 and see if it offers useful additional features. Here's a link: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=thGFKR

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^
