How to turn a old windows xp pc into a NAS server

dtronicsuk

Hey guys

im looking for a way to turn an old pc into a NAS server, currently its running windows xp pro 32bit

specs are:-

CPU - Intel Pentium 4 @2.6GHz

RAM - 1GB SD-RAM (4x256MB Single channel)

GPU - Nvidia GeForce 2 MX400 32MB

Storage - 1x WD IDE 80GB (Boot)

                1x Maxtor IDE 80GB (Data)

1x Hitchi CinemaStar IDE 80GB (Data)

MoBo - HP D530*

i have tried using openfiler but it said the cpu was a i686 and needed to support x86_64, freeNAS only works on 64bit so thats out of the question, i have thought about ubuntu server 15.04 but unsure if i can turn it into a nas server and if i can even get drivers for the pc

i need something that can be accessed by a web browser (maybe even be able to configure via browser), since this is going to be used to backup my important files from my gaming rig (specs in sig) and my android phone, something that can run via web browser would be nice.

i do know of HFS but it doesn't quite do what i want plus seems a little insecure for my likings

cheers for any suggestions

You could try putting FREENAS on it.

Or do you just want a progrma that runs on top of winodws xp?

as i stated the cpu only supports 32bit and freeNAS is 64bit only

since i spent a good 4 - 5 hours trying to get a working OS running something that can run with win xp would be nice but i am willing to tried a different os if i can get drivers for it

Plenty of video tutorials and information out there on the interwebs for how to do this. Enjoy!

So i assume you have tried to create a shared folder on windows xp( and possibly disabled password for remote connection) and didn't like it?

Step 1, Remove windows xp

Step 2, get any linux distro, and start from there

I would go with a base Debian and configure it how I wanted but if you want a web gui and out of the box functionality, OpenMediaVault will be good.

Try Linux SME Server http://contribs.org I'm using it a few years ago with my old AMD Duron system, it has a default RAID 1 configuration without any complicated settings
