G3258 OC problem

An ASUS H87M Pro can easily push an i7 4770k past 4.5GHz so you shouldn't be having problems with your Gigabyte board:

Hey all,

 

I have a Gigabyte H97-D3H board which supports overclocking the G3258. However, I ran into some issues.

For some reason, I can never reach 4.0+ghz with my board and Corsair H60 AIO cooler.

The system won't boot when above 4.2ghz and between 4.0 and 4.2 when I run stress test the system crashes.

 

What could possibly be the problem and what would be a good OC profile for me?

Have you changed the voltages at all?

While H97 supports overclocking it is not as stable or as advanced as a z97 chipset boards overclocking abilities

What are the settings you changed?

Only the frequency and voltage. somewhere around 42 and 1.2v

Your cooler should be able to handle 1.3 just fine so set it to that and see how high you can get for the multiplier

X99 won't work with g3258.

Your board could get my g3258 to 4.5 so it's not your motherboard's fault

Could you explain to me why the system won't boot? It goes to BIOS but then just crashes at the starting screen (all black with the windows logo)

The last page has the settings, and to get good overclocks you need to dive into the more advanced options. (And yw).

- put your uncore ratio to 3.6GHz and try again... if you let it on auto, the mobo with just copy the freq of the CPU cores

and sometimes, often, it's the uncore that crash the overclock... 

 

1st, reset the CMOS: UNPLUG YOUR POWER SUPPLY FIRST

Short those pins: see picture

Some says the uncore ratio should be higher or equal to the frequency?

- it doesn't matter with Haswell CPU. Some have report better Cinebench result with Uncore at 300-400 MHz lower than core...

Anyway, if you want your overclock to be stable, try my suggestion... If you want your uncore = to core, you gonna have to

give it some voltage, RING voltage control uncore ratio... The problem with your mother board, it that if I remember correctly, 

the max RING/UNCORE is 1.149v and the max VCORE is 1.2v. 

 

My mobo settings for 4.0GHz

Everything at auto except: Core at 4.0GHz / Uncore at 3.7GHz

 

I let the VCORE at auto because this mobo will overvolt to 1.2v + offset that way, so 

you don't have to set it manually. And since it is locked to 1.2v, it's pretty safe.

x99 is only socket 2011-2 which is not compatible with lga1150
