So, a friend of mine left their phone to die and now the phone refuses to charge, or give any indication that it works except itunes still recognises it exists, and says that "could not respond due to invaild responce" any suggestions/ideas?

It's an iPhone and it's a 4, trash it. The iPhone 4 came out in late 2010

Try to clean the charing plug with a/an needle, if it still dosent work, then trash it.

put it in recovery mode and restore, otherwise trash it

Trash it?? Gasp. 

 

Sell it on eBay.  Some one will buy it for parts.  (Just make sure it's listed as not working so that no one comes back to you complaining wanting their money back.)
