How much does a modem affect your internet and connection quality?

cooperb21

I finally went and upgrade my modem. My isp sent mt 3-4 replacements of same one refreshed crap. There oldest modem and it just would keep fucking up for some reason..

Now that i have my new modem my connection for last week has been stable never went out once. \

Wifi signal seems stronger and can reach further. Imy my house where i had two bars i now have full 3.

On top of that i now have more options with modem settings and 5ghz wifi seems alot better on all my devices faster and not dropping or having any connection issues.

I wish i realized this sooner or my isp would stop selling shit old modems.

The router can be why WiFi speeds are slow and if your speeds around a few Mbps of what you're supposed to be getting from your ISP on Ethernet your problem is the router. If you got DNS errors when your connection didn't work, it usually is your ISP's DNS.

my ISP provide this 2in1 modem+wireless router, but it would sometimes drop connection during high (wireless) usage, so I bought my own router and the problem disappeared

its not the modem its the router quality. if its crap then yeah you may experience connection drops and limited speeds . you could have keeped the modem your isp provided you with and just buy a good wifi router. but anyway modem in 2014 wtf

An ISP provided "modem" is actually a 4-in-1 device.

Usually, it sounds like this:

- A Decent quality modem

- A poor quality router

- A medium-quality WiFi Access point

- A generic 4-port switch just like any other.

The wired switch usually has no problems. Everything else can potentially be troublesome. This is why most (smart) people use the ISP's device as a modem only, and buy a router which does the other 3 things well.

No idea what a router even does or is.

A router basically controls the flow of information between your computers and the internet. If the "router" part of your device sucks, your internet disconnects, is slow, or has port forwarding problems.

the 5ghz band does not increase your speed. it actually makes it slower. dont suggest you use it. stay on 2.4ghz unless all your channels are severely crippled

thats what i ment. if the wifi didn`t worked good then you could have bought just a good wifi router if the internet through cable was working fine

but its fine what you did, but its way more expensive
