ollioddi

Hey people of ltt

I was wondering if i should buy an usb 3.0 harddisk for my laptop, and wanted to know, what is fastest. The 1 tb i have in my laptop, or an usb 3.0. And if possible, could i load games, programs and videos from the usb without problems?

laptop specs:

gt650m

windows 8.1

12 gb ram

Thanks in advance

Hey ollioddi,

External drives are slower, compared to internal, even if they are plugged in with a USB3.0 cable. They are designed for different data loads and internal drives don't have a bridge-chip which slows down a bit. Even if a drive cannot reach either SATA 3 speeds nor USB3.0 speeds, there is a real world difference in performance.
Depending on how heavy the game is, you should be able to load games off an external drive. Games rely on storage only for loading times so you shouldn't have any problems with that.
