Windows 8.1 after you set up the start menu to be like W7 is the same in my experience. (I don't use at all the metro UI). I do like how when you are copying files, its shows you the transfer rates, that's cool. But it depends what you use it for? I have a program (Novapoint) that says there may be some compatibility issues with W8.1 and not W7, but I have not encountered any yet so check the compatibility for programs that you want to run. Should not be any issues now since the operating system has been out for a while.

But since it is free, why not? 8.1 though.

In daily use I didn't notice it. (Word processing, excel, internet, etc). As for gaming I believe (correct me if I'm mistaken) Linus did a video explaining that there was a performance advantage using W8 over W7. I can't seem to find the video at the moment. Perhaps for the specific programs you use, performance may vary. I am sure that there is information somewhere in the wide internet that could help you with that though. If not, post the programs in this forum and some one will know :

I would upgrade, since Microsoft is going to drop support for Windows 7 soon, and you get a free upgrade from Windows 8.1 (Not 8) to Windows 10. You can disable the Metro UI if it really bugs you, but I honestly just got used to it and never used it, it's easy to ignore it. It's faster, and in my experience, good to use and pleasing. I would recommend it.
