PC turns itself off when gaming with over 100Hz monitor refresh rate

itayzfira

hi there all
nice to be here
english is not my mother language, so I hope I'll get it right.

I use my PC for gaming
it's my first self-build PC

I need your help to find out what makes the PC turn itself off (like someone pulled the electric cord out from the wall).
it happens only when I play, but in different games (BF4, Grid 2, Gotham Imposters, MOH-warfighter...).

if the video settings are on LOW, I can use the 120 MHz refresh rate with 1920x1080 and the PC will keep working,

if the refresh rate is set to 100Hz or lower with 1920x1080 or lower I can set the video settings to Ultra and the PC will keep working,

but 120Hz refresh rate with 1920x1080 and video settings higher then LOW cause the PC to turn itself off.

all the drivers are up-to-date, also made tests with older versions, and nothing is overclocked.
after the PC turn itself off, in order to turn it back on, I have to switch the power button on the PSU off, wait about 10 seconds, and then turn it back on.
just then I can click the power button in the front panel and turn the PC normally on.

although my monitor(asus vg248 144hz) supports 144Hz, using it causes blue screen, I've read posts about it , so I found it's a known issue, but I couldn't follow the solution and fix it myself.

but I believe that's a different issue.

I have tried to use Prime95 and FurMark for some hours but the PC survived it...
I thought it may be a temp. problem, so I monitored it. but it looks that the temps are ok too...

my build :
cpu - amd fx 8350
cpu cooler - corsair h80i
mobo - asus sabertooth 990fx r2.0
gpu - radeon HD 7990
psu - corsair hx850
memory - corsair vengeance LP 2x8 1600
storage - ssd samsung 120 GB
           - wd blue caviar 1 TB
system  - windows 8.1
case     - corsair 200r
monitor - asus vg248 144hz
fans :

- rear : the h80i (fan/radiator/fan) - out take
- front: 120 mm - in take
- top : 120 mm out take and 120 mm - out take
- side : (lower position) 140 mm - in take
(upper position) 140 mm - in take

ive got exactly the same issues with amd crossfire with vg248qe

the solution to this is using cru and disable the 144hz option

 http://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thread-Custom-Resolution-Utility-CRU

at detailed resolutions you see 1920x1080 60 click edit and copy

now add a new profile to detailed resolutions and paste the 60hz settings and change 60hz to 120

and click ok

now uncheck instution block and your done

restart your pc and 144hz option is disabled in windows

now you can game on 120hz without issues

awesome to hear its working!

i really dont know how to enable 144hz mode i think its a multigpu issue

but i gamed at 144hz and you really dont see a huge diffrence

read this article to calibrate your monitor

you get way better colors

http://pcmonitors.info/reviews/asus-vg248qe

:)

everytime you install a new driver for your amd card you need to redo the cru utility

so keep it on your pc

  • 1 month later...

so I thought the CRU solved it,

but the issue is back .

after every driver update I used the CRU again like pummetje said.

i'm using the 14.4 catalyst (not a beta version)

:(

just a thought after looking at your power supply location / air flow.

can you prop the case up on books to let the psu have full air flow and the check fan is working.  it might be a power supply thermal issue.

apart from that i would recommend getting a second hard drive and experimenting with a second windows install.

does the fans locations seems to be good ? I have 2 on the side door : 1 horizontal with the cpu and 1 with the gpu. I think in the picture you can see only 1 of them.

I would try first to lift the pc higher on books and see if it helps.

I can buy a psu (can't harm to have a spare one around ) and check if that the issue...

could you recommend a substitute ? I want to be sure I don't get problems with it too.

thank you for helping )

I am thinking the power supply is not getting enough air flow as it has a base intake that can get blocked.  your case has a dust filter on the base for the power supply, you could check its not full of dust.  (That would be the last potential thermal issue if you have checked cpu and gpu temps)

I would not recommend buying another PSU (yet)  as it will be a spare you will never use.

the fan locations look fine.  i assume the top and side door are intake and the radiator is venting out.  as long as your temps are good its not a thermal problem.

that's right, the door fans are intake and the radiator is outtake, but the top fans are outtake (heat goes up so I thought it would be natural to help it on the way out). should I change it to intake?

I will check now if the lifting helps. i'll get it under load...

the temps of the cpu and gpu are in a healthy range, the pci-e slot where the gpu is installed can get a bit high (1-2 degrees over 60°).

going to put some load on it and will be right back :))))))

so i was able to run bf4 on high graffic settings for about 30 min.

and that only with getting the pc about 5 cm above the floor.

I played on a 64 players server with around 80 fps.

it ran for another 30 min.

but it happened before that is was good and than it went off again, what can i do to make sure it's ok now?

running the bf4 on full load ultra settings is enough ?

Have a look in the bios.  it might have an event log that might indicate a clue to the issue.  if raising the case helped the power supply is probably the issue (but i would expect a stress test to reproduce the issue which it does not).  try turning power supply round so the intake is inside the case rather than in the base of the case.  Its also a good opportunity to check the power supply fan is working.

I have no idea how to do that, is it easy to find a guide for that ?
