on the fence with AMD or intel

rparent

im no fan boy but i do need a new cpu/mobo

i recently upgraded to a 144hz monitor and my i7 3770k ( OC to 4.5ghz ) paired with amd rx 580 card is struggling to get fps in current games up to the frames i need. I was budgeting around 600 $ for cpu/mobo/ram/ssd.

my question is, do i go with an intel i5 8600k or ryzen 5 2600x.. 75% of my time on my pc is gaming. Im looking to "future proof" my cpu for at least another 5 years, i can see myself upgrading my gpu sooner than that. any help is appreciated since im on the fence and dont know enough about current cpu's to just buy one or the other.

Hi,

AMD is better for workstation/ video editing and

the Intel is better for gaming.

I would get the Intel as it also can handle other tasks just fine and it absolutely blows away the AMD in gaming.

If you want future proof, get a z390 board, then you can also use 9th gen chips and you do not need a bios upgrade for 8th gen.

Personally I'd go with the 2600x, since it won't bottleneck your 580 and you can upgrade to zen 2 next year since AMD will be supporting the sicket till 2020 (who knows, maybe even get zen 3). Currently intel is better, but for the long term I'd go amd.

144hz at 1080p

looking to achieve 100-140 fps i dont need to play on max settings ether.

currently around 80-100 fps in any modern AAA title. at lowest settings. bf5 and cod bo4

edit * bought the monitor while i had a amd 7950 card. and fps did not go down. but the card was dying. i overpaid hard for the 580 card due to mining :( so i do not want to part with the card any time soon

There's a whole lot of "it utterly depends on what you're doing".

The 8600k will only pull ahead when you have a lot stronger GPU and you put a solid OC into it.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
Type Item Price
CPU AMD - Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor $159.99 @ Amazon
Motherboard MSI - B450 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard $111.99 @ B&H
Memory ADATA - XPG GAMMIX D10 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory $102.99 @ Newegg

  Total $374.97

From there, it really just depends on what you want to do. You would need to get to at least a 1080 Ti/2080 before you're going to see much performance difference, as the GPU will be the bottleneck.

If the cost difference doesn't bother you, the 8600k is a fine CPU, though you'll probably want to OC it a little. Stock settings are a bit weak.
